Acquiring a truck is considered to be a long-term investment, which is constructed on the premise of being reliable, strong and performing consistently. Majority of the buyers are convinced that their car is going to last them many years particularly when they use it as their daily driver and in heavy duty. But in the case of certain models, this confidence starts to diminish only a few years into the ownership.

In the third year, some trucks start showing some concealed problems which were not evident at the time of purchase. Mechanical failures to electrical issues, such problems can easily make owning them a frustration and costly affair. Knowing these patterns assists buyers to make better choices and prevent cost surprises in the future.

1. Ford F-150 (2015–2017)

The 20152017 Ford F-150 first impressed customers due to its innovative design and great performance. Nevertheless, after several years of operation, many owners began complaining of driving problems with the drivetrain. The issues with transmission (slipping gears and rough shifting) became more widespread, and the driving experience was less predictable over time.

Common Issues Reported:

  • Slipping of transmission and rough gears.
  • Jerky steering at high speeds.
  • Aluminium body corrosion.
  • Expensive transmission repairs.
  • Less confidence in driving with time.

Corrosion of aluminium body panels is another critical issue as it was previously thought to be a breakthrough feature. Oxidation may be rapid in humid or coastal areas and may ruin the look of the vehicle. Repairs can be very expensive due to the fact that aluminium needs specialised treatment and this can be inconveniencing and costly to long term users.

2. Ram 1500 (2013–2014)

These years of Ram 1500 were popular due to the comfortable ride, however, some issues are likely to emerge after prolonged usage. Another issue that can arise and be deemed as one of the most important is the air suspension system and it can leak or it can experience compressor failures. Such problems slowly impact the quality of the ride, as the truck becomes unstable and less fun to ride.

Common Issues Reported:

  • Air suspension leaks.
  • Compressor failures.
  • Poor and bumpy ride quality.
  • Infotainment system glitches.
  • High repair costs.

The infotainment system can be frustrating, on top of mechanical issues. Owners complain of frequent issues with freezing and with connectivity, particularly when on long trips. Although software updates can contribute to the short-term, there are chances that the frequent failures might necessitate full replacement, which increases the total cost of ownership.

3. Nissan Titan (2016–2017)

Nissan Titan is recognized to have high performance, particularly in adverse environments. Nevertheless, proprietors have reported some severe problems that occur after a couple of years, especially on the rear axle. These failures may be impromptu, and this leads to unforeseen repair scenarios that interfere with regular usage.

Common Issues Reported:

  • Rear axle failures.
  • Diesel injector problems.
  • Weakness and dizziness.
  • Limited parts availability.
  • Increased downtime.

Injector failures are also a problem in diesel models and can result in rough idling and excessive smoke. The parts are not easily available thus the truck is not relied upon because it may have to wait before repairs are completed. These recurring problems can over time, greatly lower owner satisfaction.

4. Toyota Tundra (2007–2008)

The Toyota Tundra is more or less a reliable brand, however, with these model years, there is a different case. Frame rust is a significant problem that is more evident after several years particularly in areas with extreme weather conditions. This corrosion can cause weakening of the structure of the truck unless remedied early.

Common Issues Reported:

  • Severe frame rust.
  • Structural weakening.
  • Expensive frame repairs.
  • Corrosion under wet conditions.
  • Additional drivetrain concerns.

In the case of second hand consumers, this problem can manifest itself very soon when former owners failed to take precautionary steps. Though Toyota has provided checks and replacement in certain instances the price of repair may be very high. One of the primary causes of making these trucks problematic as time passes is rust.

5. Chevrolet Silverado 1500 (2014–2016)

The Chevrolet Silverado 1500 is a very popular model that is used in personal and commercial purposes, although some model years have acquired a reputation of having reliability problems. One of the most alarming issues is engine stalling, which may happen at any time when driving, even on the highway.

Common Issues Reported:

  • Engine stalling.
  • Excessive oil consumption.
  • Transmission failures.
  • Reduced engine performance.
  • Frequent maintenance needs.

These problems are likely to be aggravated after several years, compromising performance and reliability. Though regular maintenance might be used to minimize certain risks, in most instances, some issues are subject to costly repairs. This mix of engine and transmission issues render the ownership less attractive in the long run.

6. GMC Sierra 1500 (2014–2016)

The GMC Sierra 1500 also has numerous components common to the Silverado, and one of them is that it inherits the similar problems. Owners often complain of transmission issues which begin with some slight delays but end up increasing in severity over time. The problems may impact daily usability and long-range driving.

Common Issues Reported:

  • Sluggish or jerky gear changes.
  • Transmission wear.
  • Infotainment system failures.
  • Frozen controls and black screens.
  • High repair costs.

The issues with technology also contribute to the frustration, as infotainment systems are often malfunctioning. Although updates can offer short-term solutions, longer-term solutions can be expensive. These models are difficult to maintain due to the combination of mechanical and technological problems.

Common Issues Reported:

  • Turbocharger failures.
  • Electrical system faults.
  • Transmission problems.
  • Problems with battery and sensors.
  • Corrosion-related damage.

Electrical issues complicate the ownership even more since they may be simple sensor malfunctions or more serious system failures. These problems may not be easy to detect and fix, thus becoming more expensive. To numerous owners, the mechanical, as well as electrical, breakdowns are too much to bear.

Common Issues Reported:

  • Engine misfires.
  • Faulty ignition coils.
  • Worn spark plugs.
  • Transmission hesitation.
  • Reduced acceleration.

Other issues are transmission hesitation especially during stop-and-go traffic. Although there are fairly easy fixes, the problems can continue to influence the driving experience. All these issues can decrease trust in the reliability of the vehicle over time.

9. Ram 2500 (2012–2014)

The Ram 2500 is made to be used on heavy-duty but this also implies that the parts are more likely to wear out sooner due to consistent use. The most common problems are suspension issues, resulting in a bumpy ride and loss of control and particularly on uneven surfaces.

Common Issues Reported:

  • Suspension wear.
  • Ball joint failures.
  • Steering instability.
  • Electrical glitches.
  • High repair costs.

Electrical issues are also among the causes of dissatisfaction among the owners, as systems at times may fail unexpectedly. Maintaining and repair may be complicated and costly, especially in cases where several problems arise simultaneously. These reasons render long term ownership to be more challenging than anticipated.
