Ford Brings More V8 Power Back While Making a Sharp Turn Toward EREV Technology

To provide truck buyers with something closer to what they demand strong engines, that V8 feel that many are accustomed to, expanded range, and some functional new tech-Ford is taking a significant initiative. This involves expanding its use of the good old, tried and true, V8 power, while also reinventing its electric vehicle gameplan with Extended Range Electric Vehicle tech. What Ford is doing is demonstrating that one size does not fit all; it is developing a full and balanced approach for extremely varied truck buyer circumstances, both those looking for a sound as well as feel of a normally aspirated V8, as well as others that still want the benefits of electric.

Underpinning this plan is the Ford F-150; it is the country’s largest-selling pickup truck, and quite an important vehicle for Ford as it stands. As we hurtle forward to the 2027 model year, Ford is said to be implementing numerous significant upgrades in terms of Ford F-150 powertrain, trim availability and strategic shift as an ordering guide for dealers reveals a likely better base engine, extended V8 availability to range-topping models and continued commitment to hybrid power plants. In a larger Ford, what’s happening to the F-150 is just one piece of the puzzle. It’s reshaping its entire business and moving to wider hybridization and extended-range technology, reforming its production facilities, developing cheap electric cars, getting into the battery energy storage business, but it also continues to provide what have until now been profitable, gasoline-powered trucks and vans to sustain operations. All, Ford reasons, is in response to customer demand for what the company says customers want.

1. A More Powerful Base Engine for the 2027 F-150

The twin-turbocharged 2.7-liter Eco Boost V6, an engine that makes 325 hp at the present time, will disappear when the 2027 Ford F-150 changes; dealership order forms suggest that Ford is planning on introducing a twin-turbocharged 3.0-liter Eco Boost V6 as standard on the model. Both V6s share the same general architecture but the larger of the two might promise more power for entry level F-150 customers.

What the New Base Engine Offers:

  • Familiar Ford and Lincoln architecture
  • Potential horsepower increase over current engine
  • Better strength for entry-level buyers

Many Blue Oval and luxury marque customers are already acquainted with the 3.0-liter twin-turbo V6, as it has been found powering numerous higher performance oriented Ford and Lincoln products. We have seen it at work, and in application with a Ford Explorer where it can produce up to 400hp depending on trim level, or the Lincoln Aviator where the same size V6 is tuned for 383hp. Ford’s use of the bigger motor in the Ranger Raptor and Bronco Raptor is not so conservative in its application; those vehicles put out substantially more than the regular models.

Ford has yet to give an official number in terms of hp for the 3.0-liter engine but it is understood to give a decent bump over the retiring 2.7 Eco Boost. It’s possible Ford will place it so the output isn’t very far from the larger 3.5 Eco Boost and 5.0 V8 options, both of which are 400hp since more power could get to the lower trim buyers of this truck without impacting the price hierarchy.

2. The 5.0-Liter V8 Returns to More Luxury Trims

Perhaps the change of greatest interest to traditional truck enthusiasts will be the broader availability of the 5.0L Ford V8. The naturally aspirated V-8 is still a cornerstone of the F-150 lineup and is sought after by truck buyers looking for traditional engine characteristics rather than a smaller turbo mill. However, for 2027 Ford will allow trim lines more premium than just the traditional offering of the V8 to be purchased with the mill. Luxury buyers will now have an expanded choice in powertrains.

Why Luxury Buyers Gain More Choice:

  • Classic V8 power reaches premium trims
  • King Ranch gains new option
  • Platinum buyers receive greater flexibility
  • Traditional engine character remains available
  • Luxury and performance now combine

Up until now, the King Ranch and Platinum options for buyers were limited to either the standard or hybrid Power Boost Eco Boost V6 with a displacement of 3.5-liters. Now, in the restructured configuration for the 2015 Ford F-150, sources say both of these upscale pickups would have access to the 5.0-liter V8. With its 400 hp capacity, this makes for a readily available “American V8 sound and feel” within the most luxurious Ford F-150s that can be purchased.

This pairing enables buyers to order the opulent interior with a factory-standard V-8. There are still a number of truck buyers who do not wish to forgo high-trim content in lieu of an eight cylinder. It was apparent to Ford that by putting the eight-cylinder into the King Ranch and Platinum lines it would better answer that demand, and rival Ford in a class where other manufacturers have been turning their attention back to V-8 propulsion. This particular change in production does something else-it makes another reason for luxury truck buyers to stick with the F-150.

3. New Colors and Continued Hybrid Power

In addition to styling modifications, Ford also is changing some of the appearance package choices that are available to buyers of the 2027 F-150 by revising the available exterior color choices. Buyers of the F-150 for 2027 will have three new paint colors to select from Birch Sand, Neptune Blue and Wild Green to help provide the all-new model with a new look. It’s a nice option for customers who would like something other than the well-known colors which are currently available for models.

Updates Beyond Engine Performance Changes:

  • Wild Green expands color choices
  • Older shades leave the lineup
  • Hybrid PowerBoost system continues

To accommodate the new hues, Ford is also trimming a few current color options. Antimatter Blue, Argon Blue and Avalanche may soon be history. While most of these changes come down to aesthetics, color still plays a big role in the overall truck purchase. It really does so for the F-150, which comes in so many trims, shapes and sizes, and has so many specialized packages for certain types of customers.

Ford is keeping the hybrid Power Boost system as well; it is a 3.5-liter Eco Boost V6 paired with an electric motor and this represents the continuation of Ford’s belief in hybrid tech while major moves are being made throughout Ford’s EV operations. The Power Boost delivers the same performance benefits of the 3.5 while simultaneously providing a slight boost in efficiency along with generating electrical power on the go so that you can use your Ford F-150 hybrid to get your power needs.

4. Ford Reshapes Its Broader Business Strategy

The Ford F-150 will undergo a redesign as part of a much broader company transformation at Ford. Ford is embracing what it calls a “more customer-focused approach” with “investment and production decisions beginning to cluster around places Ford has a stronger view of demand.” In simple terms, Ford wants more of its resources directed into business areas and products that provide it with superior profit potential, whether that applies to trucks, or any other number of technologies.

Ford’s Changing Investment Priorities:

  • Focus shifts toward stronger demand
  • Trucks remain a major priority
  • Hybrid technology receives continued support
  • EREV development becomes increasingly important
  • Battery storage enters future strategy

Ford is undertaking about $19.5 billion in business changes and capital reallocations with its overall restructuring. The company is committing more investment to higher return business lines, like Ford Pro, trucks and vans, hybrids and EREVs, and its growing battery energy storage business. It anticipates that by 2030, hybrids, EREVs and all-electric cars will contribute to half of its global sales, as compared with about 17% in current time.

Ford CEO Jim Farley recently characterized this plan as a response to a dynamic market and customer demand, noting Ford is now shifting its investment priorities rather than following its previously held timeline as to how quickly the market would reach a fully electric solution. Although a shift in policy certainly plays a role in timing, Ford asserts that its consumer demand is driving its current course of action. As such, Ford plans to have multiple powertrain technologies in its stable, not relying on a single technology.

5. The F-150 Lightning Moves Toward EREV Technology

A critical shift in Ford’s forward truck strategy potentially centers around the F-150 Lightning. While reports are unconfirmed, Ford has been exploring putting the electric pickup into an “Extended Range Electric Vehicle” form. In this case, it combines the electric drive motor with a compact gasoline generator that would charge on-board batteries. The idea here is to increase the vehicle’s driving range without compromising any of the advantages tied to electric drive systems.

How the EREV System Works:

  • Electric motors continue powering wheels
  • Gasoline generator supports battery charging
  • Longer trips become more practical
  • External charging becomes less essential
  • Electric performance remains a priority

The intent of the EREV’s design-to maintain all the immediate performance advantages of an electric drive system-while also solving what is perhaps the biggest perceived problem by truck purchasers (driving range). Rather than always plugging in, an on-board generator can “top off” the batteries on longer drives. The drive wheels still accept input from the electric drive, and so, the truck “feels” like an EV would.

According to Ford, this system might be a better alternative for owners who travel vast distances frequently or tow significant amounts of cargo, and those who live where charging facilities are scarce. The EREV will aim to blend the benefits of fuel-fed vehicle performance with electric capabilities, rather than making the buyer choose either; it would hopefully be able to meet any driver’s work and commute demands with this strategy.

6. More Than 700 Miles of Estimated Range

That being said, Ford suggests that in the future, its next-generation Lighting EREV could attain an extended range over 700 miles on one fill/recharge. The increase in total distance that can be travelled with an electric-focused truck would be quite impressive-an improvement so large that it would overcome any battery concerns the public had. The Extended Range would boost appeal.

What the Extended Range Could Deliver:

  • More than 700 miles estimated
  • Electric wheels retain direct power
  • Quick acceleration remains an advantage
  • Towing capability stays a priority
  • Long-distance travel becomes easier

The coming electric F-150 Lightning is also supposed to continue delivering 100 percent of its power through electric motors to the wheels. The Lightning is supposedly capable of taking the full-size, heavy-duty F-150 from 0-60mph in under five seconds, retaining the instant acceleration and relatively seamless operation that distinguished the earlier vehicle. This confirms that Ford is trying to boost utility without sacrificing driving characteristics readily available with electric trucks.

Future truck capabilities with emphasis on towing, tow capability are expected to continue to be a “key component.” Ford’s anticipation is for “the EREV system to offer very good ability for the long distance tow as well as the extra capacity that charging brings with it that might be desirable for customers wishing to utilize some of the electrically driven characteristics and the desire for long distance range and ability for that tow.” The system is intended to decrease dependency on “public charging infrastructure,” or that of.

7. Production Changes and Increased Truck Manufacturing

Amidst Ford’s shifts to new powertrain technologies, there have been significant shifts to the company’s production methods. By the time they finished their next electric truck plan, the 2025 model year, the company had finished their production of the all-electric F-150 Lightning at the Rouge Electric Vehicle Center. Just because Ford has done this, however, their production for gas and hybrid F-150s is still on the rise and continuing. These production changes illustrate the companies need to maintain a balance of meeting today’s needs while looking ahead.

Manufacturing Shifts Supporting Truck Demand:

  • Lightning production officially reaches transition
  • Rouge workers support nearby production
  • Aluminum shortages affected operations earlier
  • Dearborn receives an additional crew
  • Truck output increases significantly next year

Two fires at the Novelis aluminum plant in New York previously limited previous production operations. This shortage had a ripple effect, limiting how many aluminum body panels are available to Ford throughout their fleet of trucks and SUVs. In order to supplement production, about 500 Rouge plant employees are being moved to the nearby Dearborn Truck Plant. This change of pace will enable workers to contribute to truck manufacturing while still keeping workers busy.

The Dearborn Truck Plant is the home of the gas and hybrid F-150 trucks. Ford plans on adding a fourth, additional crew-about 1,200 people strong-with production expected to ramp up by about 45,000 trucks next year. The decision represents the enduring strength of traditional and hybrid trucks at a time when Ford is heavily investing in electric and extended-range offerings-a production strategy aimed at being able to support several propulsion paths simultaneously.

8. New Truck and Commercial Vehicle Production Plans

Future manufacturing plans also include increases in Tennessee and Ohio. Formerly the Tennessee Electric Vehicle Center at Blue Oval City, that facility has been renamed the Tennessee Truck Plant. The plans call for it to produce all new and affordable gasoline-engine truck models beginning in 2029. This indicates an additional commitment on the part of Ford to continue making trucks conventionally despite making moves toward greater electric power.

Future Plants Expand Ford Production:

Ford plans on 2,300 new employees or more will be placed in the Tennessee operation to fulfill the new manufacturing program, which shows that Ford hasn’t lost confidence in the fuel burning vehicles in truck markets in where consumer desires are always high. Customers care about capability on the Ford trucks so combustion engines will still be playing their crucial roles in future products.

The Ohio Assembly in Sheffield, Ohio is under preparation by Ford. The plant will soon become the site of significant commercial vehicle manufacturing. As of 2029, it will produce a new gas and hybrid-fueled commercial van, as well as new Super Duty chassis cabs, in a bid to bolster the commercial presence that Ford Pro aims for. These consumers need vehicles that can get the job done each day.

9. Affordable Electric Trucks and Battery Development

Continuing its investment in the all-electric segment, cost-effectiveness will factor heavily into Ford’s plans for the future. At its Blue Oval Battery Park Michigan located in Marshall, the automaker plans to produce prismatic battery cells of the LFP chemistry in 2026. These batteries will become a critical component of future EVs made by Ford. Making ownership of an electric truck within reach by decreasing upfront costs that could be a serious detractor for the new vehicle segment.

The batteries are intended to be used on an all new midsize electric truck that is planned for rollout in 2027 out of Ford’s Louisville Assembly plant in Kentucky. This new pick up will be based on the new universal EV platform and is planned to be marketed toward the entry point of approximately $30,000 to let as many potential consumers have exposure to modern EV technology without having to incur the higher cost of an electric vehicle.

What’s the takeaway? Ford is still committed to fully electric development, it’s just tackling various forms of technology concurrently: a cheap EV, a hybrid, an EREV, and a gas engine truck. This broad range will give buyers choices according to their uses, how they drive, their financial abilities, etc. Ford will try to create a lineup for the future that is not restrictive-driving every single purchaser to one type of drivetrain.

10. A Broader Future for Ford’s Technology and Energy Business

It does not end there however. With regard to future operations for Ford, the company is not stopping at automotive manufacturing and vehicles but is also making an entrance into the battery energy storage market. Ford will be converting the existing Blue Oval SK Battery Park located in Glendale, KY into a production hub specifically for battery large-scale energy storage systems, costing the company close to $2 billion of investment. This project is diversification into business areas which are related to batteries and storage infrastructure.

Ford Expands Beyond Traditional Vehicles:

  • Current EV lineup remains supported
  • Financial strength funds future expansion

The storage systems were created specifically for the needs of industrial and commercial customers, as well as for utilities, as well as for Data centers. Ford aims to deploy at least 20GWh storage by late 2027 on an annual basis as the result of a deal which permits Ford to develop, own and operate the Kentucky facility independently. Meanwhile, Ford still continues to back up and service its entire EV portfolio of cars, charging facilities, as well as ownership services through appropriate products and programs.

But Ford’s future isn’t rooted in just one type of engine or one idea of where things are going. The automaker is making V8 engines more mainstream, boosting truck production, sticking with hybrid power train sand making a cheaper electric truck while pushing its F-150 Lightning toward an extended-range electric future. As a customer, you might want to stay with that familiar hum of a 5.0 liter V8 or a pickup truck pushing toward a thousand miles of operation on a full charge while Ford nudges that vehicle to more advanced and longer-range electric power sources. This multifaceted strategy could help preserve its powerful traditional and future vehicle holdings while keeping the door open.
