
The 24 Hours of Le Mans is arguably the most demanding test of endurance the motorsport world has to offer, where not only human will, but machine too is put under scrutiny against the testbed that is Circuit de la Sarthe. Ever since 1923, the famous French 24 hour has witnessed the ultimate convergence of speed, endurance, engineering and innovation in this sport as this blend is tested over the entire span of a day. In a race where raw speed is not always the deciding factor as is the case in shorter contests, the car must possess both speed and reliability to fend off varying weather, numerous driver swaps, stresses and strains in conjunction with sheer number of laps at high speed. Throughout the ages, certain machines proved their aptitude to combat these extremes better than the competition, establishing themselves in the motorsport hall of fame through consistently exceptional speed and/or repeat wins.
Beyond the trophy cabinets or the dominion over a particular year, this group of stunning cars forever revolutionised how aerodynamics, chassis construction, drivetrains, lightweights, efficiency, and race car designs operated. Whether it was through massively potent engines, raw straight-line velocity, ground-effect aerodynamics, feather-light chassis structure, state-of-the-art modular construction or a hybrid drivetrain; each success came from more than mere grunt power. From the aerodynamic marvel of the Porsche 956/962 and the raw V8 of the Ford GT40 to its successor, the hybrid Toyota GR010 HYBRID, or perhaps the technically sound Audi R18 e-tron quattro – they all created incredible benchmarks for the Circuit de la Sarthe which continue to inform today’s hybrid technology, road cars and the endurance racers that continue to tackle the ultimate 24 hours in racing.

1. Porsche 956/962
Porsche’s 956 and the car that followed it the 962 are probably one of the most successful sports prototype racers ever built. This design swept the Le Mans race for six successive years 1982 to 1987 collecting the wins (often with several Porsches occupying the first positions as well). Porsche’s advantages lay in the powerful twin turbo-charged engine light chassis, and excellent aerodynamics for Circuit de la Sarthe.
Porsche 956/962 Highlights:

- Aluminium monocoque chassis
- Ground-effect aerodynamic design
The flat-six twin-turbo charged and 2.65 litters in size created roughly 635 horsepower, the weight distribution needs to be kept stable by means of a rigid structure that still needed to be light weight and very stable at speed, thus the adoption of a monocoque chassis of light-weight aluminium was appropriate; but arguably the most important technological element on this new shape was ground effect the use of Venturi tunnels in the underside of the car creating impressive levels of downforce at high speed without suffering significant drag down the straight on. The sheer dominance of Porsche could be seen by not only the 1-2-3 finish in 1982, but also the incredible 1-2-3-4 sweep in 1983. The technology transferred from the racing car to the road car is obvious in a number of technologies found on the Porsche 959 super car.
2. Ford GT40
Ford GT40 is among America’s lasting trademarks to this race, because back then when Ford decided to face up to the Europeans dominance. With four consecutive overall Le Mans wins from 1966 to 1969, the GT40 was ranked one of the top enduring race cars of that era. It was thanks to all involved with figures like Carroll Shelby and Ken Miles in trying to adapt a racing idea to something that could go with the already accepted race car in Europe.

The Mark II, a 7.0 litre V8 with well over 485bhp, paired brute V8 power and fantastic engine reliability with sleek, low drag, aerodynamic efficiency perfectly suited to the long straight roads that make up much of the Circuit de la Sarthe, a powerful combination Ford dominated using the Mark II. 1966 gave Bruce McLaren and Chris Amon the first Le Mans win for an American manufacturer whilst Dan Gurney and A. J. Foyt would repeat this with the first all American driver partnership to win at Le Mans in 1967 and Ford were to record yet further successes through 1968 and ’69, with the Jacky Ickx win being particularly iconic as he famously walked instead of ran at the traditional mass start and this repeated winning record turned the racing project from a simple car into an established icon of American sport and endurance racing achievement.

3. Audi R8 LMP900/LMP1
Audi re-defined modern endurance racing with this proto type in the form of the R8, a car which proved itself to be a potent mix of raw speed and awesome mechanical durability. Between the years of 2000 and 2005 Audi managed five consecutive wins at the Le Mans with their five respective R8 prototypes which paved the way showing that endurance can be overcome when pace and economy work in unison.

Engine was a 3.6 litter twin-turbo V8 producing roughly 610bhp but in design was as much about speeding up repairs on the race day. Its modular design allowed major sections, particularly the rear, of the R8 to be detached relatively quickly on race-day-potentially decreasing time lost in significant repairs and giving a competitive edge through the course of the whole 24 hours race. Audi also applied FSI technology to the R8 program using the new direct-injection system without power penalty. The R8 claimed victory in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005 (including a first, second and third in the 2001 race) and set the standard for racing engineers in terms of the combination of durability, modulatory and efficiency.

4. Ferrari 250
It was within the realm of early 1960’s GT racing, however, that the Ferrari 250 GTO/LM series earned a prominent place during Ferrari’s own “Golden Years”. The cars were styled beautifully and engineered relentlessly. They truly created and then cemented one of the most respected nameplates in Ferrari’s racing history; this also helped immortalise and make the 250 series the collectible holy grail it continues to remain.

Developing in the region of 300-320hp at about 7500 rpm, the 3.0-literColombo V12 gained a reputation for smoothness as well as reliability. 1962 would see the first of class wins for the 250 GTO with drivers Pierre Noblet and Jean Guichet also enjoying success as well as an overall second in 1962 behind only an out of class F1- Ferrari sports car with that same 3.0literColombo V12 powering its form in the form of another Ferrari and the overall win at Le mans with the 250 LM in 1965 through Jochen Rindt and Masten Gregory provided its latest endurance-racing success with Ferrari; however the win, along with the styling, not to mention the relative rarity, was enough to make them ultra-desirable, more than individual competition success, the name was also strongly linked to the way Ferrari could achieve race winning abilities whilst retaining a certain kind of road-car panache.

5. Bentley Speed Six
The Bentley Speed Six remains one of the earliest fantastic Le Mans tales. An outright winner in both 1929 and 1930 it showed that a reliable mechanical machine could win the long hard race in the same way an all-out racing car could, helped by the fabulous ‘Bentley Boys’, it has since became closely associated with the initial rugged high-speed touring and racing Bentley’.
Bentley Speed Six Highlights:

- 6.5-liter inline-six engine
- 200 horsepower output
- Robust racing chassis
- Exceptional endurance reliability
Power was produced by an honest and solid 6.5 litre straight-six pumping out approximately 200bhp. Woolf Barnato and Henry Birkin both participated for the majority of the 1929 race and winning it, with Barnato back again with Glen Kidston in 1930, winning the race for a second time running. The Speed Six owed its success to strength and a reliance to maintain a high-performance level for the duration of 24-hours. Its robust chassis and a mechanical design which was a proven durable package was able to withstand the tortures of early endurance racing, achievements that secured its reputation and one which paved the way for Bentleys lasting Le Mans image.

6. Porsche 917
The Porsche 917 re-set the limits of absolute performance at Le Mans and undoubtedly is one of the most iconic racing cars ever created. An enormous engine in a lightweight chassis with specific aerodynamic bodywork allowed for tremendous straight-line speeds round the La Sarthe circuit and the car established a fantastic reputation by demonstrating high speed performance in an endurance environment.
Porsche 917 Performance Highlights:
- 4.5-liter flat-12 engine
- 580 horsepower output
- Speeds above 220 mph
- Lightweight spaceframe chassis
- Long-tail aerodynamic body
This 4.5-litre, flat-12, producing approximately 580 hp, pushed the 917 in excess of 220 mph on the Mulsanne Straight. Rigid spaceframe under the two-seater had the new long-tailed or “Langheck” racing body. Its success, driven by the wins by Hans Herrmann and Richard Attwood in the 1970 Le Mans-Porsche’s first-and those by Helmut Marko and Gijs van Lennep the following year, gave the 917 and Porsche a global reputation. Its fame was further cemented with its prominent role in Steve McQueen’s Le Mans and in its own right, its continued development and advances in aerodynamics led to the establishment of Porsche at the top of international endurance racing and irrevocably altered the nature of high-speed racing cars.

7. Jaguar D-Type
The Jaguar D-Type, of which three won Le Mans successively from 1955 to 1957. It was a testament that effective aerodynamic shape and light construction of an engine, not simply an enormous size, could achieve the greatest durability on the race track. In Britain, it was one of the important racing cars which dominated British motorsport in the 1950s and was a symbol of Jaguar at the time.
Jaguar D-Type Highlights:

- Revolutionary monocoque construction
- 3.4-liter straight-six engine
- 250 horsepower output
- Distinctive aerodynamic fin
A revolutionary monocoque construction resulted in an unnecessarily compact vehicle with incredible rigidity and a 3.4-liter straight-six producing around 250hp ensured that a great amount of pace was provided in endurance racing. However arguably most unique and signature style queues of the D-Type were the fin directly behind the driving position that offered an aerodynamic enhancement that assisted the long straights. It’s great winning story was the triumph that both Mike Hawthorn and Ivor Bueb helped give Jaguar in 1955. Such results translated into an incredible streak of wins and this helped set the benchmarks for future Jaguar sports road cars construction and the technology/principles behind this highly successful machine helped set the agenda for the performance cars that preceded them.

8. McLaren F1 GTR
The McLaren F1 GTR represented one of the greatest Le Mans surprises ever, with the company demonstrating it was possible to put a road-car-derived machine against purpose-built racing prototypes and actually win the race. At Le Mans in 1995 the F1-modified proves a Supercar built using road-car principles can take on top endurance racing with enough commitment and preparations, and is a major success in the modern era of GT racing.
McLaren F1 GTR Highlights:
- Historic 1995 overall victory
- BMW-developed 6.1-liter V12
- 600 horsepower output
- Lightweight carbon-fibre structure
- Central driving position
The BMW-developed 6.1-liter V12 produced around 600 horsepower and was housed within a lightweight carbon-fibre structure. The F1’s central driving position also provided excellent driver visibility and contributed to its distinctive layout. JJ Lehto, Yannick Dalmas, and Masanori Sekiya guided the F1 GTR through difficult weather and intense competition to claim the overall win. The victory was especially significant because the car originated from a road-going supercar rather than a conventional open-cockpit prototype. McLaren’s achievement shocked the racing world and elevated the F1 GTR into endurance-racing royalty, while also inspiring a new approach to the possibilities of GT-based racing machinery.

9. Toyota GR010 HYBRID
The Toyota GR010 HYBRID marked the dawn of the modern hypercar in the Le Mans 24hrs race combining both twin-turbo internal-combustion and an electrical power system together. It illustrated how the hybrid technology could not just work for the efficiency factor but in conjunction of that, also generate tremendous amounts of performance throughout the entire duration of a twenty-four-hour race by employing a mixture of intelligently managed energy inputs and, importantly, consistency.
GR010 Hybrid Highlights:

- Electric motor-generator assistance

- Sophisticated energy recovery
The GR010 HYBRID 3.5-litre twin-turbo V6 engine is combined with an electric motor generator to achieve a maximum of approximately 670 horsepower. Energy recovery systems reclaim stored energy before feeding the powertrain with electrical power when an extra performance boost is requested. Toyota secured its first Le Mans victory with the GR010 in 2021 with Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi and Jose Maria Lopez and its second Le Mans win was secured in 2022 by Sebastien Buemi, Brendon Hartley and Ryo Hirakawa. The car demonstrated that hybrid technology could prevail under extreme endurance racing stress and through finding a balance of aerodynamics (downforce), power and efficiency within restrictive regulations Toyota was able to forge an important foundation for development of powerful road hybrid systems of the future.

10. Audi R18 e-tron quattro
The Audi R18 e-tron quattro pushed alternative powertrain technology into one of the most demanding forms of motorsport. It combined a 3.7-liter V6 TDI diesel engine with an electric motor-generator on the front axle, creating an innovative hybrid all-wheel-drive system. The approach demonstrated that diesel and electrification could work together to deliver both efficiency and competitive performance at Le Mans.
R18 e-tron Technology Highlights:
- Diesel-electric hybrid powertrain
- 3.7-liter V6 TDI engine
- Approximately 700 horsepower
- Front-axle electric assistance
- Flywheel energy accumulator
With about 700 horsepower and a flywheel accumulator for recovering braking energy, the R18 e-tron quattro is said to have offered electric power when requested and helped maintain speed, assisted by its energy-sipping carbon fibre monocoque shell, when Audi’s diesel-hybrid racing ideology peaked to secure victory in its Le Mans 2012 debut in a race of previously unseen scale and importance. Other endurance races’ pioneers like the Bentley Speed Six, Jaguar D-Type, Ford GT40, Porsche 917, Porsche 956/962, Audi R8, McLaren F1 GTR and Toyota GR010 HYBRID also changed the game through ground-effect aerodynamics, lightweight construction, direct injection, hybrid power, and recovery systems, among others but all these ten legendary cars are remembered as much for the spirit of engineering innovation and racing identity that travelled with them long after they disappeared from La Sarthe.
