It goes without saying that building faster cars has never been simply about building faster cars. In fact, this process combines the best engineering solutions, cutting-edge technologies, and sheer determination to break the existing records and set new ones. For many years, the manufacturers have competed against each other for an extremely prestigious title that of having produced the fastest car. Every new record made the competitors raise their ambitions and manufacture cars that can go even faster than anything else.

A breakthrough moment came in 1987 when Ferrari F40 became the first production car whose speed surpassed 200 mph. It became evident that what seemed impossible was achievable thanks to the advances in engineering. The manufacturers realized that they had to introduce some radical innovations to make their cars go faster, hence the increased rivalry among them. Thus, over the next decades, the manufacturers from all corners of the world have struggled to create the fastest production vehicle.

1. The McLaren F1 as the Ultimate Benchmark

The McLaren F1 became an almost mythical benchmark for all the performance cars well before turbocharged and hybrid hypercars started coming out. Designed by the legendary engineer Gordon Murray, it came out in 1993 and impressed everyone with a completely unique concept. Namely, instead of focusing primarily on the power and other technologies, McLaren preferred to create an engineering masterpiece, which made the car stand out from all the others of that time. It became the ultimate benchmark.

Main Achievements of the McLaren F1:

  • An original lightweight engineering concept
  • The carbon-fiber monocoque chassis
  • The naturally aspirated BMW V12 engine
  • Superb structural rigidity of the vehicle
  • Unique driving experience

The most prominent feature of the vehicle that became popular among car enthusiasts is its chassis built with the use of a novel carbon-fiber material. Due to this fact, the engineers managed to create a vehicle that was much lighter than any similar competitor and more rigid at the same time. Together with the natural aspiration 6.1-litre BMW V12 engine, McLaren F1 offered an outstanding driving experience.

The McLaren F1 became an important benchmark in the automobile manufacturing industry in 1998 when the car achieved a top speed of 240.1 mph. This speed proved that smart engineering and design solutions could compete with raw power in terms of speed performance. It remained the ultimate record for quite a few years until another company produced a faster automobile. Nonetheless, McLaren F1 remains one of the best-performing models in the automotive history to this day.

2. Ferrari’s Quest for Speed

Ferrari had managed to establish itself as a manufacturer of top-performing automobiles because of the previous success with the F40. However, the company did not stop there and started focusing on producing the fastest automobiles. One of Ferrari’s most ambitious projects turned out to be the production of the Enzo supercar. It was based on a wide range of technologies borrowed from Formula 1 racing and focused on the ultimate driving experience.

Features of the Enzo:

  • Original Formula 1-inspired engineering
  • Excellent aerodynamics of the body
  • Lightweight structure of the vehicle
  • High-power V12 engine
  • Unbeatable top-speed performance

Enzo was named in honor of the company’s founder. It became famous due to the variety of features that distinguished this vehicle from many of its competitors. Firstly, its body was aerodynamically designed, which improved its stability at high speeds. Second, the lightweight materials were used to maximize the power and improve the performance of the vehicle. The powerful naturally aspirated V12 engine was responsible for the excellent performance.

When the Enzo achieved a top speed of 218 mph, it became apparent that Ferrari had succeeded in becoming one of the leaders in terms of the manufacturing of performance cars. In addition to the great driving experience, the model demonstrated the possibility to borrow technologies from the formula racing. Thus, the success of Ferrari with the model Enzo became a new benchmark for all the automobile manufacturers of that time.
