Fox Body Mustangs Return to the Spotlight with Modern Restomod Engineering and Chassis Upgrades

The Fox Body Mustang built from 1979 to 1993 is undergoing a major resurgence in the restomod and pro-touring segments. Traditionally considered an affordable platform with strong aftermarket, light weight and well-known 5.0-liter engine, the car is becoming a preferred choice for high-end restomods. The Fox Body Mustang has received a major exposure during the 2024 SEMA Show and PRI Show and nostalgia is driving many owners back to their old cars, which they used during 1980s and 1990s.

What makes the current Fox Body revival unusual, however, is the level of engineering involved in modern builds. From sophisticated suspension systems to powerful engines and well-designed chassis, the car undergoes a complete transformation into a much more advanced machine than it ever was. No longer bound by straight line performance requirements, today’s builds are made for autocross, road courses, road trips and pro-touring. There is a huge amount of restomods currently in the works and the market demand suggests that it’s only the beginning.

1. Fox Body Mustangs Are Making A Major Comeback

Third generation Fox Body Mustangs are experiencing a major resurgence in the restomod world and becoming increasingly popular among pro-touring racers. The trend was evident at the 2024 SEMA Show in Las Vegas and the PRI Show in Indianapolis where many Fox Body builds were demonstrated. This is one of the manifestations of the broader comeback of retro-inspired vehicles on the automotive scene. Originally seen as a cheap and affordable performance car, the Fox Body platform is becoming a serious ground for restoration and high-end customization.

It is not just nostalgia which is driving the Fox Body resurgence. From the lightweight unibody structure to the simple mechanical layout and extensive aftermarket support, Fox Body Mustang offers plenty of opportunities to transform the car with a restoration. The growing number of builds at the automotive shows also demonstrates that the enthusiasts are ready to treat this platform as an option worth investing in.

2. The Third-Generation Mustang Built A Strong Foundation

The Fox Body Mustang is the third generation of the Mustang heritage and follows the Mustang II platform. The cars were manufactured from 1979 through 1993 and received a major styling change in 1987 where the “four eye” front end was replaced with the aeronose design. The buyers had three body styles to chose from notchback, hatchback and convertible (though the latter one was less popular). The engines were 2.3-liter Lima inline-four, 3.8-liter Essex V6 and famous 5.0-liter High Output 302ci V8.

The 5.0-liter engine helped to establish the reputation of the Mustang as the dragstrip king. As a result, it became a platform that was easy to customize and upgrade. During all these years, many owners of the Fox Body Mustangs were personalizing the cars in various ways and developing their own designs and modifications. Today, the same platform is attracting a great attention of the builders who want to create a combination of original car characteristics with modern chassis and suspension engineering, powerful engines and stylish interiors.

3. Nostalgia And Wealth Are Driving Restomod Demand

Manir Karim, owner of Our Dream Resto Mod in Salisbury, North Carolina, has witnessed a major rise of the popularity of the Fox Body Mustang during the last 13 years of running his shop. Although his shop was never presented as a Fox Body specialist, Karim was always a big fan of these cars and even owned several of them. However, the last five years brought “a crazy amount of demand” for this platform.

  • Original owners return to classics
  • Custom builds attract serious investment
  • Six-figure projects are increasingly common

Most of Karim’s customers are now people in their 50s and 60s who have enough financial resources to invest heavily into these cars they once dreamt about. Some of them are the original owners of Fox Bodies and some bought the car that they drove 20-30 years ago in order to recreate the experience with the help of modern modifications and restoration services. Fox Bodies were always relatively easy to customize and modify due to wide aftermarket support, but buyers usually avoided spending much money on it. Now, there is little hesitance in this matter. Karim has completed numerous no-budget builds and quite a few six-figure projects on Fox Body platform.

4. SEMA And Pro-Touring Builds Are Changing Perceptions

The featured builds at the major automotive shows are helping to drive increasingly ambitious Fox Body projects. Holley featured a pro-touring notchback at the SEMA, thus showcasing how far the platform has come in terms of engineering beyond its drag racing identity. Fox Body is a perfect candidate for restomod because of its availability (plenty of used cars), affordability, simplicity and wide aftermarket support. Typically, the process of restomod starts with the conversion of the wheels from standard five-lugs into something else in order to provide a room for the bigger wheels.

Another company that was also playing an important role at the 2024 SEMA Show is Detroit Speed and Engineering which acted as the architectural force behind Holley Performance’s featured Fox Body Mustang. At that time, Detroit Speed operated under Holley umbrella but was later acquired by QA1. The featured notchback used domestic muscle components while highlighting the platform’s potential to become a high-end performance car. Growing popularity of these builds is helping to change the perception of Fox Bodies as inexpensive performance cars to something much more sophisticated in terms of chassis engineering.

5. Detroit Speed Is Reinventing The Fox Body Chassis

According to Nathan Peterman, senior product design engineer at Detroit Speed, the Fox Body project represented an R&D canvas to create advanced suspension packages. Although there were plenty of driveline parts in the aftermarket, there was a lack of racing and pro-touring suspension systems for this platform. Traditional setup was possible, but with the help of new engineering knowledge it was possible to make Fox Body much better. Historically, third generation Mustangs were known for their excellent performance in straight line environments, but their unibody structure was prone to flex during road course and autocross driving. Detroit Speed wanted to change this situation and showcase how much more capable this platform is besides its outstanding performance in the straights.

Detroit Speed developed multiple conversion stages for the front and rear of the car. The goal of this project was not to make the Fox Body faster in a straights, but to give it the opportunity to perform in the corners with the help of its upgraded suspension system and structure. Such approach represents a paradigm shift for the way how the platform is being engineered now. Unlike acceptance of its weaknesses, modern builders try to address the limitations of the original structure with the help of advanced suspension systems in order to create a new vision of this lightweight Mustang.

6. SLA Suspension Delivers Major Track Improvements

Holley’s featured notchback used a Short Long Arm, or SLA, conversion which turned the factory front strut into upper and lower control arms and coilovers. Track testing of this suspension change has shown a remarkable improvement in its capabilities. While driving the car in the same weather conditions on the same track and having fresh tires installed, the lap time was reduced from 1:45 to 1:43. For this project, there was a Ford Performance 363 crate engine used which has Holley 4150 intake and Sniper throttle body.

This particular project also demonstrated the versatility of the platform. The team drove the car for 8,000-10,000 miles during the Power Tour while also participating in autocross races, drag racing, road courses and road trips. As a result, the car became an “everything vehicle” capable to compete in different performance environments without being tied to a specific use. Such versatility proves that, with proper chassis and suspension tuning, Fox Bodies are able to keep up with much more advanced sports cars on the road courses.

7. Roadster Shop’s SPEC Chassis Opens New Possibilities

Roadster Shop unveiled its new SPEC Chassis which is specifically designed for third generation Mustangs at the SEMA. It was showcased under a half-skeletonized Fox Body, giving the viewers an opportunity to see how the chassis integrates with the original subframe points. Roadster Shop is specializing in custom aftermarket chassis for both body-on-frame and unibody cars. SPEC chassis system was designed to turn the unibody cars into body-on-frame in terms of handling capabilities. One of the advantages of the new chassis system is the removal of the front shock towers, providing more space for the engine bay and easier engine swap.

There was an immediate and surprising demand for the chassis system which was expressed by Jeremy Gerber, one of the co-founders of Roadster Shop. He called the demand for the new chassis as one of the fastest experienced for new products. According to Gerber, the demand for this product is happening due to the evolution of the platform and demographic changes. Although there were always a lot of enthusiasts of this platform and they loved to modify their cars, there are now many people who are in the prime spending years and ready to invest in their cars.

8. Builders Are Pushing Toward Four-Digit Power

The new chassis opportunities are driving builders to attempt increasingly ambitious Fox Body projects. Manir Karim ordered a SPEC chassis for a client’s 1981 T-top coupe, and he plans to use flush-fit glass and “pretty wild” Coyote engine generating more than 1,000 horsepower. The blank-canvas approach of this chassis allows builders to create unique engine bays and body designs for the car. This type of projects demonstrates the shift in the way how the modern Fox Body scene is evolving from simple engine swapping and cosmetic changes to performance transformation.

Extreme Power-Build Potential:

  • Builders are targeting four-digit power

  • Chassis creates additional design freedom
  • T-top projects remain highly desirable
  • Extreme builds are gaining attention

The pursuit of extreme performance also demonstrates some gaps that still exist in the aftermarket. According to Karim, the major problem for the builders is the complete exhaust system. There are plenty of exhaust parts available, but there is no single exhaust system for the car which could be installed without some adjustments. There are different manufacturers supplying headers, mid-pipes and cat-back exhaust systems leaving the builders to solve the fitment problem on their own. Despite these gaps, the demand for the extreme Fox Body projects is constantly growing.

9. The Aftermarket Still Has Room To Grow

Currently, the Fox Body aftermarket might still be in the early stages of its next development cycle. According to Jeremy Gerber, high-end Fox Body builds are “just getting started”, and the shops all over the country are already cashing in on the renewed interest. Josh Stamper, vice president of marketing and new product development at SS Tubes, agrees with that. Stamper developed a custom two-piece fuel-line system that was able to route around aftermarket subframe connectors, thus solving some fitment problems which arise while building Fox Bodies.

Where New Parts Are Needed:

  • Exhaust remains an aftermarket gap
  • Custom fuel lines solve fitment
  • Bodywork could become major business
  • New parts will follow demand
  • Fox support may expand dramatically

Jeremy Gerber also expects major advancements in the area of top-notch bodywork. Stamper says that, eventually, the Fox Body aftermarket might be as well-developed as the aftermarket for the early Mustangs. If the popularity of this platform will continue to grow, the future decade might even bring brand-new shells and custom body panels for these cars.

10. Velocity Restorations Shows The Fox Body’s Ultimate Potential

Florida based Velocity Restorations, known for a decade of high-end restomods of Ford and Chevrolet trucks, has entered the Fox Body market with a build of a restomod Mustang which costs nearly $400,000. The newest project of this shop has the exterior that is deliberately kept subtle, looking like a low mileage stock car rather than an exaggerated race car. There are no huge wings or wide fender flares on it while the custom hood features the center section that is raised by two inches. Lightweight 18-inch billet CCW wheels complete the understated appearance, while the interior is a mixture of the original spirit and modern materials and technologies.

Inside, there is Sparc Industries bespoke steering wheel inspired by the original late model airbag design and a mix of leather and Alcantara. Recaro seats are complemented by the retro cloth pattern. The Dakota Digital and Autometer gauges provide a period style appearance without distractive touchscreens. Inside the car, the transformation is much more radical. There is no factory mechanical equipment left, the body has been mounted on a specially designed Roadster Shop chassis and suspension and the car received massive nine inch Ford rear end, custom exhaust system, six piston Baer brakes, 5.0 liter Coyote crate engine, 3.0 liter Whipple supercharger, 10R80 transmission and carbon-fiber driveshaft. This combination delivers 800 horsepower at the rear wheels.
