The 2027 Ford F-150 Is Changing Fast: Which Powertrain and Equipment Updates Matter Most?

This 2027 Ford F-150 is a refreshed full-size pickup as opposed to a ground-up redesign, though there’s still significant rework going on under the skin of this widely recognized shape and architecture. Leaked order guides and dealer bulletins reveal updates that include, but are not limited to, engine revisions, changes in what trims offer which option packages and off-road hardware, advancements to safety tech and connectivity, tweaks to appearance options and the future of the electric Ford pickup.

These aren’t quite changes to create a totally new F-150, but rather a way for customers to simplify configurations of the current F-150 to fit their needs. Ford is even expanding engine availability and making the cost of entry to off-road packages lower, while also dividing equipment groups that once combined options to let us configure this truck without adding excess content. Meanwhile, we are getting a lot more driver assist and safety equipment across more of the trim levels.

However, there is a sense of the familiar in 2027 as Ford mixes classic truck attributes with updated tech and elect rification. A 5.0-litre V8 continues its position within the range, while the Tremor and Raptor models adopt varied approaches to equipment specification and the F-150 Lightning shifts to an extended-range setup. Across all ten updates, they represent a system of Ford improving the F-150 with adaptability, capability, technology and evolving consumer wishes, in place of a radical styling restyle.

1. Replacement of the Base 2.7L EcoBoost with a New 3.0L V6

Largest powertrain alteration on the 2027 F-150: the engine available in XL, STX, and XLT models. The 2.7-litre twin-turbo V6 that’s been offered as an affordable-EcoBoost since 2015 will no longer be available. Taking its place is a twin-turbo 3.0-litre V6. While many of the truck’s key characteristics will remain the same, this is still a significant mechanical change for the workhorse versions of the F-150.

Key Features of the New 3.0L EcoBoost:

  • Twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6
  • Replaces the outgoing 2.7-litre EcoBoost
  • Expected to exceed 325 horsepower
  • Expected to exceed 410 lb-ft of torque
  • Offered on XL, STX, and XLT trims

On the other hand the outgoing 2.7-liter EcoBoost made 325 hp along with 410 lb-ft of torque at best in its latest iteration. The Blue Oval has remained mum on the forthcoming 3.0-liter engine from Dearborn-officially there aren’t hp, lb-ft or mpg figures currently-though what we can tell from it is that this mill should still top what its predecessor does, therefore possibly affording drivers more punch from the base EcoBoost option.

Another significant equipment issue, for buyers who plan to tow, centers around The Tow/Haul Package. While not being an option on the new 3.0 EcoBoost (a separate trailered brake controller is available), this may be a significant omission on the ordering guide for potential buyers who consistently pull things with their trucks, whereas for buyers who mostly use their trucks in the daily grind, the 3.0 will likely present a more palatable entry-level EcoBoost option.

2. Expanded Availability for the 5.0L V8 Engine

For 2027, Ford is expanding the availability of its naturally-aspirated 5.0-litre V8, providing even more traditional truck owners an option for the well-known V8 engine. It’s again available on the King Ranch and Platinum trims. Now buyers opting for those upmarket variants don’t have to option up to one of the turbocharged or hybrid options if they have the desire.

Key Features of the 5.0L V8:

  • Naturally aspirated 5.0-litre V8
  • Produces 400 horsepower
  • Generates 410 lb-ft of torque
  • Available on King Ranch and Platinum
  • Tows up to 12,800 pounds when properly equipped

The 5.0-liter V8 continues its marriage to trucks built on the 122-inch and 157-inch wheelbases. Ford isn’t abandoning this lump with anything on the ground either, having left it designated as the obligatory engine for the street biased STX Lobo performance package. This, of course, will retain the typical, traditional sound of its true dual exhaust system.

With 400hp and 410lb-ft, the V8 can still provide strong truck service, although in a specification to match the intended usage. Making the powertrain an option in even more of the trims-luxurious as well as specialised-enhances customer choice and Ford’s ability to keep a conventional V8 around in light of what’s going on elsewhere in their range with turbocharged and electrified technology.

3. Introduction of the Lower-Cost Tremor 400A Trim

It looks like Ford’s off-road customers can finally get into F-150 Tremor without having to shell out as much money with a new Tremor 400A equipment group. Essentially using the contents of the base STX, the Tremor keeps the same mechanical off-road kit as the more optioned models and drops some luxury features. Ford is attempting to be able to cut down on entry cost without cutting the actual hardware.

Key Features of the Tremor 400A:

  • SuperCrew 4×4 configuration
  • 5.5-foot bed
  • 400-horsepower 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6
  • 33-inch all-terrain tyres
  • Locking rear differential and specialised transfer case

Tremor 400A is only available in a SuperCrew 4×4 with a 5.5ft bed. It is propelled by the 400 horsepower 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 mated to a 10-speed auto transmission. It will come with equipment like 33-inch all-terrain tires, upgraded suspension, a locking rear diff and specific transfer case, continuing on with what the TREMOR has come to be for its basic function as an off road vehicle.

And rather than taking out any of the important under-body equipment needed for hardcore off-roading, Ford eliminates various niceties and creature comforts for the lower-cost option (power front seats, heating for both rows, dual-zone temperature control, a power-sliding rear window, and the Bang & Olufsen sound system), while offering the desired optional features in the Tremor 401A package. Customers will now have a clean choice for spending the extra money whether it’s on luxury features or mechanical performance.

4. Debut of the Trimmed-Content Raptor 800A Package

The high-performance F-150 Raptor family is receiving its own lower-content equipment strategy with the introduction of the 800A package. Positioned beneath the returning 801A, Raptor 37, and Raptor R configurations, the 800A provides a more accessible route into the Raptor lineup. It is not simply an appearance package with fewer cosmetic extras, as Ford retains the major mechanical components responsible for the truck’s high-performance off-road ability.

Key Features of the Raptor 800A:

  • High-output 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6
  • Fox Live Valve suspension
  • 35-inch off-road tyres
  • Leather-trimmed heated and ventilated front seats
  • Core Raptor off-road performance hardware

Underneath the bodywork, the Raptor 800A continues with the high-output 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6, Fox Live Valve suspension, and 35-inch tyres. It also retains leather-trimmed front seats with heating and ventilation, meaning the 800A still delivers the fundamental Raptor experience while reducing equipment that is less important to buyers focused primarily on performance and off-road capability.

The cost reductions come from removing selected premium convenience and technology features rather than changing the truck’s essential performance hardware. The 800A does without the 14-speaker B&O Unleashed audio system, head-up display, heated rear seats, memory features, Rigid LED fog lamps, and larger 2-kilowatt Pro Power Onboard system, using a 400-watt setup instead.

5. Standalone Torsen Front Axle Differential Option

Ford is giving Tremor buyers additional freedom when selecting mechanical equipment by making the front axle Torsen limited-slip differential available as a standalone option. Previously, customers who wanted this hardware had to obtain it through a more expensive bundled equipment configuration. Separating the differential from larger packages allows buyers to spend more directly on the mechanical capability that matters to them.

Key Features of the Torsen Option:

  • Front axle Torsen limited-slip differential
  • Available as a standalone option
  • Designed to improve front-wheel traction
  • Useful for demanding off-road conditions
  • Reduces reliance on larger equipment packages

A Torsen limited-slip differential can provide useful front-wheel traction during demanding off-road situations, particularly when terrain becomes uneven and available grip varies between the wheels. Making the feature independently selectable gives Tremor customers another opportunity to tailor the truck to their intended use without necessarily moving into a more expensive equipment configuration simply to obtain the differential.

This change fits into a wider effort by Ford to unbundle equipment across the F-150 lineup. Instead of forcing buyers to choose large packages filled with features they may not need, the company is creating more opportunities to select specific hardware according to individual requirements, which can make ordering a specially configured truck more practical.

6. Standardised Safety Packages and Expanded BlueCruise Tech

Technology becomes a larger part of the 2027 F-150 package, particularly on the volume-selling trims. The XLT 302A Mid equipment group includes Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0, while BlueCruise availability is expanding across higher trims. The changes give buyers access to more driver-assistance technology without necessarily requiring them to move into the most expensive versions of the truck.

Key Features of the Expanded Safety Technology:

  • Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0
  • Adaptive cruise control
  • 360-degree camera system
  • Lane centring
  • Pro Trailer Hitch Assist
  • Expanded BlueCruise availability

Ford is also standardising active safety hardware across the 2027 F-150 lineup. Every version receives front automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist, and rear cross-traffic alert, while other available technologies include safe-exit warning, Pro Trailer Backup Assist, and a surround-view camera system. This creates a stronger common safety foundation across the range.

BlueCruise is also becoming standard on Lariat and higher trims, with every equipped truck receiving a 90-day trial. After that period, owners can choose between subscription options or a one-time purchase to continue using the hands-free highway driving system, giving buyers an opportunity to evaluate the technology before committing to continued access.

7. Standard One-Year Connected Security Package

The 2027 Ford F-150 introduces additional connected security features as standard equipment across the lineup. Every truck will receive a one-year connected Security Package, while buyers who want longer protection can choose an optional seven-year plan. The system is designed to provide useful assistance when the vehicle is threatened or misplaced, adding another layer of protection beyond traditional security equipment. However, owners will need to activate the truck’s modem before these connected services can operate properly.

Key Features of the Connected Security Package:

  • Standard one-year coverage
  • Optional seven-year plan
  • Theft alerts
  • Start inhibition
  • Vehicle-location assistance
  • Required modem activation

The package provides several useful functions aimed at protecting the F-150 when it is parked or being used away from home. Theft alerts can notify owners when suspicious activity is detected, while start inhibition can help prevent an unauthorised person from starting the vehicle. These features give owners greater awareness of what is happening with their truck and can provide additional assistance if an attempted theft occurs or the vehicle is moved without permission.

Vehicle-location assistance is another practical feature included with the connected security system. It can help owners locate the truck when necessary, making it particularly useful if the vehicle has been stolen or moved unexpectedly. The one-year package gives buyers access to these connected services without requiring an immediate long-term commitment. Those who want continued coverage beyond the initial period can select the available seven-year option, provided the required modem activation is completed.

8. Refreshed Exterior Styling and Palette Updates

Ford is making several exterior changes to the 2027 F-150, giving buyers additional styling choices while revising the truck’s colour palette. The changes include new wheel equipment, updated bumper treatments and several additions and deletions from the available exterior colours. These adjustments vary by trim, allowing Ford to refresh the appearance of the range without completely redesigning the truck. The result is a more varied selection for customers choosing different configurations and appearance packages.

Key Features of the Exterior Updates:

  • Body-colour bumpers on XLT 302A
  • New dealer-installed 22-inch wheel
  • Antimatter Blue Metallic discontinued
  • Argon Blue Metallic discontinued
  • Avalanche discontinued
  • Birch Sand added
  • Neptune Blue added across the lineup
  • Wild Green added to selected trims

The XLT 302A configuration receives body-colour bumpers, giving the truck a more coordinated exterior appearance compared with darker or contrasting bumper finishes. Ford is also introducing a new dealer-installed 22-inch wheel, providing another option for customers who want a larger and more distinctive wheel design. These changes are relatively minor individually, but they give buyers more ways to customise the truck’s appearance when ordering a 2027 model.

The exterior colour selection is also changing for the new model year. Antimatter Blue Metallic, Argon Blue Metallic and Avalanche are being discontinued, while Birch Sand joins the range except on King Ranch models. Neptune Blue will be offered across the lineup, while Wild Green will be available on XL, XLT, Lariat and Tremor trims. This reshuffling gives the F-150 a refreshed colour selection without requiring major exterior design changes.

9. Lineup Simplification and Package Unbundling

Ford is simplifying the 2027 F-150 lineup by removing several configurations and appearance packages from the order structure. The changes affect specific STX, XLT and Lariat combinations, while some equipment is being separated from previously bundled packages. This approach gives Ford a more streamlined production structure and can make the ordering process easier for customers. Buyers will still have access to important equipment, but certain features will be organised differently across the available trims.

Key Features of the Lineup Changes:

  • STX FX4 201A deleted
  • Lariat 500A 157-inch wheelbase deleted
  • STX FX4 Special Trim deleted
  • STX Black Appearance Package deleted
  • XLT 303A High deleted
  • FX4 Off-Road offered on STX 200A or Mid
  • Reduced package bundling

The FX4 Off-Road package receives an important ordering change for 2027. Instead of being limited to the STX 200B configuration, it can be selected with the STX 200A or Mid configuration. This gives buyers a more direct way to add off-road capability without having to select a particular higher-level package simply to access the equipment they want.

Several other configurations are being removed, including the STX FX4 201A, Lariat 500A with the 157-inch wheelbase, STX FX4 Special Trim, STX Black Appearance Package and XLT 303A High. Simplifying these combinations can reduce manufacturing complexity and make production more efficient. For customers, the main effect is a cleaner lineup with fewer overlapping packages and configurations to compare during the ordering process.

10. Future Electrified Direction via EREV Powertrain

Ford is also changing the future direction of the F-150 Lightning. The current battery-electric Lightning has ended production, while the Lightning name is set to continue with an extended-range electric vehicle, or EREV, powertrain. Unlike the previous battery-only configuration, the new system combines electric propulsion with a petrol-powered generator. Ford’s approach is intended to retain the driving characteristics of an electric truck while addressing concerns surrounding range, towing and longer journeys.

Key Features of the Future EREV Direction:

  • Current all-electric Lightning discontinued
  • Lightning name continues with EREV
  • Combustion engine works as a generator
  • Electric motors drive the wheels
  • Extended driving range
  • Planned alongside the next-generation F-150 platform

The EREV system allows the electric motors to remain responsible for driving the wheels while the combustion engine operates as a generator. When additional energy is required, the generator can produce electricity to replenish the battery and extend the truck’s usable driving range. This preserves the immediate torque and electric driving characteristics associated with the Lightning while providing an alternative to relying exclusively on public charging infrastructure during longer trips.

Ford’s planned approach is particularly relevant for pickup buyers who regularly tow, travel long distances or operate in areas where charging infrastructure can be limited. The company has indicated that the next-generation Lightning could offer more than 700 miles of total range with its generator-backed system. The EREV strategy therefore represents a significant shift in Ford’s electric-truck plans, combining battery-electric propulsion with the flexibility of onboard power generation.
