A few years from now, the new-for-2027 Ford Explorer ST should still be warm in our memories. The three-row SUV is designed to deliver all the fun-to-drive qualities of a hot hatch combined with family practicality. The Ford Explorer ST houses a 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged Eco Boost V6, which boasts 400 horsepower and 415 lb-ft of torque, delivering the must-have 0 to 60 mph time of 5.1 seconds. Ford will focus on the spec sheet when updating the Explorer in 2027 but expect only to see a new Sinister Package that puts a gloss-black theme over the exterior, amber LED daytime running lights and 21-inch gloss-black wheels.

The performance-inspired features of the Ford Explorer ST lie along the lines of what the segment has come to expect from a sporty SUV. A sport-tuned suspension, available all-wheel drive, and six drive modes bring a uniquely engaging drive, while the Class III Trailer Tow Package, which is standard on the Explorer ST, offers up to 5,000 pounds of towing capacity. Inside, the Explorer ST features ActiveX upholstery with Miko suede inserts, heated and ventilated seats, and an available seven-passenger configuration, while Ford Digital Experience, an expansive digital instrument cluster, available wireless smartphone connectivity, and Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0. The 2027 Ford Explorer ST is available starting at $53,660.

1. Optional Sinister Package

The most significant visual upgrade to the 2027 Ford Explorer ST is the optional Sinister Package, which lends a more aggressive look to the high-performance SUV. This package emphasizes the Explorer ST’s more aggressive stance by replacing a host of exterior features with darkened accents that give the vehicle a more eye-catching presence on the road. The package includes gloss-black ST badges, which have traditionally had chrome borders, leading to a more cohesive and menacing aesthetic. And there are no mechanical modifications to the Explorer ST, so you don’t need to worry about losing a single horsepower, regardless of whether you’re parked in the driveway or headed to the front of the pick-up line.

Sinister Package Styling Highlights:

  • Gloss-black ST exterior badges
  • Dark and aggressive appearance
  • Chrome borders removed completely
  • Exclusive amber daytime lights
  • Distinctive performance-inspired exterior details

The package also can be used on the Explorer ST’s wheels and lights. These include 21-inch aluminum wheels with a gloss-black finish and P275/45 R21 all-season tires, which give the SUV a more aggressive look and stance. The SUV’s front-end appearance is completed by amber daytime running lights, instead of the white units on the usual Explorer, making the vehicle more easily distinguishable from the pack. The fact that Ford has decided to offer this package simply makes the Explorer ST look even more dramatically different than a standard family crossover. For 2027, Ford is attacking the Explorer ST’s exterior with styling tools alone, eschewing anything to do with Ford’s tried-and-true performance hardware.

2. Avalanche Gray and Ruby Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat

Ford expands the 2027 Explorer ST’s customization options with two fresh exterior paint choices Avalanche Gray and Ruby Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat. These colors give buyers additional ways to personalize the SUV and complement its performance-focused design. Alongside the new paint options, Ford introduces the Slick Roof Conversion, which removes the standard roof-rack side rails to create a sleeker exterior profile. This configuration is aimed at drivers who prefer a cleaner roofline rather than the appearance of traditional side rails. Another notable addition is the newly available Panoramic Vista Roof with a power shade, giving buyers an open-air feature that adds to the cabin experience.

2027 Explorer ST Customization Options:

  • Avalanche Gray exterior paint
  • Ruby Red Metallic Tinted Clearcoat
  • Slick Roof Conversion available
  • Standard roof rails deleted
  • Panoramic Vista Roof option

These packages give the Explorer ST the ability to be customized in new ways, without changing much mechanically. A new paint color is available on the explorers, along with the ability to delete the roof-rack side rails, and addition of a panoramic roof with a power cover. The Slick Roof Conversion works if one is looking for a sleeker profile, with the Panoramic Vista Roof adding an open-air feel to the interior. These options and new packages offer even more customization potential for potential buyers, as Ford chooses to stick to external style options, while the Sinister Package darkens the styling even further.

3. $53,660 Starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price

The 2027 Ford Explorer ST has a starting price of $ 53,660, excluding options, destination, taxes, title, and dealer fees. That starting number is significant for what the Explorer ST is loaded with as standard equipment. At the factory, Ford includes the Class III Trailer Tow Package, Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0, and digital software trials. For an additional cost, there’s the Sun and Sound Package, more premium paint finishes, a 14-speaker premium audio system, and additional extended plan options for hands-free driving. With the standard features Ford provides, the Explorer ST can be an attractive package for someone looking at three-row SUVs.

Explorer ST Price and Standard Equipment:

  • Starting MSRP of $53,660
  • Class III Trailer Tow Package
  • Ford Co-Pilot360 Assist 2.0
  • Standard digital software trials
  • Optional premium equipment available

In addition, Ford offers a one-year trial of the Connectivity Package and a one-year subscription of the Security Package that begins on the warranty start date. This security software is also available through a one-time purchase. You need to keep an eye on the final window sticker for optional upgrades because they can push the final figure above the starting MSRP. The 14-speaker premium audio system that’s available in addition to the extended plans for hands-free driving among other add-ons help drive the price up. That said, at $53,660 for a 400-horsepower three-row SUV, that makes for a performance-value proposition worth considering.

4. 3.0-Liter Twin-Turbocharged EcoBoost V6 Engine

2027 Explorer ST The 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged Eco Boost V6 direct injection engine of the Explorer ST offers a maximum of 400 horsepower and 415 pound-feet of torque at 3500 rpm. The engine is mated with a 10-speed automatic transmission which can be shifted manually via paddle shifters on the back of the sport steering wheel with heated flat bottom as well as giving off short quick throttle response. This powertrain brings the muscle powers on to the engine three-row SUV and features quad chrome exhaust tips as standard. We won’t see a new powertrain for 2027 instead of this existing powertrain.

EcoBoost V6 Performance Specifications:

  • 3.0-liter twin-turbocharged V6
  • Up to 400 horsepower
  • 415 lb-ft of torque
  • 10-speed automatic transmission
  • Paddle-shifter manual control

Interestingly, there is a significant difference in the ‘stated’ power of the engine depending on where the vehicle is purchased the 3.0-liter Eco Boost V6 is rated by Ford as either 385 or 400 horsepower, according to which part of the country the vehicle is purchased in, which is driven by emissions regulations. Both versions, however, offer 415 pound-feet of torque, which is enough to provide highway merging and passing capability, with power management handled by the standard 10-speed transmission. Given that, the straight specification comparison is worth keeping in mind when considering available Explorer STs. It is the engine that anchors the sportier ‘performance’ characterization.

5. 0 to 60 Miles Per Hour in Just 5.1 Seconds

Accelerating with its twin-turbo V6 and all-wheel-drive system, the 2027 Explorer ST is a force to reckon with. During its testing, the 2027 Explorer was able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in only 5.1 seconds, with a quarter-mile time of 13.8 seconds at 100 mph. Although it is a three-row SUV, the Explorer is still fun and quick in a straight line. The team noted a likely top speed of 146 mph. The Explorer’s acceleration numbers beat the 6.3-second 0-60 mph time set by the Mazda CX-90 and the 5.6-second time of the Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid.

Explorer ST Acceleration and Speed:

  • 5.1-second 0-to-60 sprint
  • 13.8-second quarter-mile performance
  • 100 mph quarter-mile trap speed
  • Estimated 146 mph top speed
  • Stronger acceleration than rivals

The fuel efficiency figures are a testament to the 400-horsepower engine’s performance focus, yet still decent given the roughly 4,788-pound weight of the all-wheel-drive SUV. The twin-turbo V6 receives an EPA rating of up to 18 mpg city and 25 mpg highway in rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive. Over the course of two highway tests at 75 mph, the 2024 Explorer ST clocked in at 25 mpg-on par with its highway rating. If a buyer is concerned about fuel economy rather than the 400-horsepower powertrain, there are other Explorer models offered with the 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 300 horses.

6. Sport-Tuned Suspension System

No one would expect the Explorer ST to be mistaken for a high-performance vehicle in a straight line, and that would be a mischaracterization. The Explorer ST does, however, feature a sport-tuned suspension system that offers a lowered ride height and suspension calibration engineered to ensure Ford Racing quality. The suspension setup is meant to help significantly reduce body roll while cornering while also providing a comfortable highway drive. When tested in skidpad conditions, the Explorer ST offers a lateral roadholding figure of 0.83 g from its Pirelli Scorpion Zero All Season 275/45ZR-21 tires.

Handling and Suspension Features:

  • Lowered sport-tuned suspension
  • Ford Racing calibration standards
  • Reduced body roll in corners
  • 0.83 g skidpad performance
  • Pirelli Scorpion Zero tires

Rear-wheel drive is standard, and there are six driver-selectable drive modes for the Explorer ST. To help optimize driving characteristics in a range of conditions, the Terrain Management System provides different calibration settings for throttle, shift points, and traction control. Optional Intelligent All-Wheel Drive gives drivers additional confidence in challenging winter conditions and adds Hill Descent Control to the six drive modes. Rear-wheel drive with a 3.58 non-limited-slip rear axle is standard. The Explorer ST also comes with the Explorer ST Experience program for one year after delivery of an eligible vehicle, which allows owners to head to select locations in the United States, where professional drivers will guide them in further understanding what the crossover can do.

7. 2027 Explorer ST Towing Capacity

ST’s performance hardware is enhanced with useful towing capacity. The SUV is factory rated to tow 5,000 pounds and is capable of hauling ski boats, camper trailers, and personal watercraft. Ford equips the SUV with the Class III Trailer Tow Package and makes it part of the standard equipment package, so buyers won’t need to pay extra for a towing package or pay someone to install one aftermarket. The package adds a receiver hitch, trailer wiring harness, and Trailer Sway Control all functionality integrated into the Explorer ST as part of its standard utility.

Standard Towing Equipment:

  • Up to 5,000 pounds towing
  • Class III Trailer Tow Package
  • Factory-installed receiver hitch
  • Trailer wiring harness included
  • Trailer Sway Control standard

The cargo space behind the third row offers 16.3 cubic feet of space for four carry-on suitcases or groceries in the new Explorer ST. Power Fold third-row seats can be lowered with a single touch, expanding the cargo space to 43.3 cubic feet to carry 15 pieces of carry-on luggage. Stowing the entire rear storage area with both rows of seats down offers up to 85.3 cubic feet of cargo room to carry as many as 31 carry-on pieces of luggage. The Explorer ST has the capability to carry your family, luggage and toys.

8. ActiveX Upholstery and Miko Suede Inserts

ST’s cabin blends sport performance cues with comfort features. The bucket seats feature durable ActiveX material with soft Miko suede inserts, contrasting red stitching and embossed ST logos. The 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat and 8-way power-adjustable passenger seat are trimmed with ActiveX and Miko suede inserts. Both first and second-row seats are heated and ventilated, with second-row captain’s chairs featuring E-Z Entry mechanisms and additional space to make the jump to the third row easier for passengers. An available second-row bench adds another seat to the three-row SUV, extending the seating capacity from six to seven.

Interior Comfort and Seating Features:

  • ActiveX upholstery with suede
  • Red contrast stitching details
  • Embossed ST seat logos
  • Heated and ventilated front seats
  • Optional seven-passenger seating configuration

Remaining true to its family-oriented philosophy, passenger space and cabin versatility are addressed in the Explorer ST. The Explorer offers 149.5 cu. Ft. Of passenger volume and a variety of seating options. While standard second-row captain’s chairs allow you to split the difference, an available second-row bench opens up seating for a third person. Power front seats, heated/ventilated seats, heated second-row seats and an available panoramic roof make the Explorer comfortable enough to commute to work and long enough for family road trips.

Tri-zone automatic climate control with a rear auxiliary control panel allows second-row riders to set the temperature to their liking, and active noise cancellation helps keep unwanted road noise at bay. The Explorer ST adds a 110V/150W power outlet for any cabin equipment, and optional audio systems include six speakers or an 10-or 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen system.
