A tectonic shift took place in the American compact crossover market in 2026: Honda’s CR-V moved past Toyota’s RAV4 to become the nation’s best-selling compact utility vehicle. While the RAV4 had been the nation’s dominant selling compact SUV for nearly a decade, the vehicle stumbled in the middle of a key model transition, which was well underway when Honda’s product plan shifted into high gear. Consumer demand, production momentum at the factory and improved dealer inventory have the Honda in the lead through the first three quarters of 2026.

U.S. sales for the first nine months of 2026 reveal the significant margin between the Japanese crossovers. Honda racked up 336,844 CR-V sales, up 9.5% from the prior year, compared to 253,664 by Toyota. The difference, approximately 83,180 units, drops the RAV4 to eighth overall among U.S. cars and trucks. Toyota’s switching of the sixth-generation RAV4 to the only hybrid options available has undoubtedly contributed to its production problems, while Honda has enjoyed a higher degree of availability.

1. Honda CR-V Becomes America’s Leading Compact SUV

The Honda CR-V has surged ahead in the compact crossover segment in America over the first nine months of 2026. Honda sold 336,844 units through September, an extraordinary 9.5% growth year-on-year. While Toyota’s RAV4, the segment leader since last decade, managed to shift 253,664 units, a difference of 83,180 in Honda’s favor. While the development may seem monumental, the fact is it is a significant change to what has historically been Toyota’s segment flagship.

Sales Leadership Details:

  • Honda CR-V recorded 336,844 sales
  • Sales increased by 9.5% year over year
  • Toyota RAV4 recorded 253,664 units
  • The sales gap reached 83,180 units
  • Honda secured the compact SUV lead

The RAV4’s drop also pulled the model down the rankings in the broader U.S. car market. The vehicle came in eighth overall in U.S. sales, behind such vehicles as the Ram Pickup, GMC Sierra and the Toyota Camry. But the results of the CR-V show how rapidly a rival can climb with even modest levels of customer interest if the supply is there. Honda has momentum in its favor, and it has transformed the crossover into one of the most significant vehicles in the nation’s present sales battle.

2. Toyota RAV4’s Long-Running Sales Dominance

The Toyota RAV4 had built an almost legendary reputation before it relinquished its crown for sales among compact SUV models in 2026. It was the No. 1 for Best Selling Compact SUV, from 2017 until the end of 2025. The automaker sold 479,288 RAV4 units to American consumers for that year, making it the best-selling non-pickup model in the United States. The five-hundred-thousand sales number would be a significant accomplishment for any type of vehicle.

RAV4 Sales History:

  • Best-selling compact SUV since 2017
  • Maintained its lead through 2025
  • Recorded 479,288 sales in 2025
  • Became the leading non-pickup vehicle
  • Established a major annual sales benchmark

Earlier sales success has made the 2026 drooper all the more notable, however. That popularity had defined the model as an integral part of Toyota’s North American enterprise. Competitors require sizable sales to catch up, but Honda’s recent momentum has altered the picture. The RAV4’s record underscores its popularity with customers, but the model is now in the middle of a manufacturing transition that enables an adversary to leapfrog.

3. Overall U.S. Vehicle Rankings Through September 2026

The wider leaderboard shows how the top-selling automotive brands in the US performed in the first three-quarters of 2026. The Ford F-Series remained at the top of the table with 561,508 units sold, down 9.5%. The Chevrolet Silverado was in second place with 422,713 sales. The Honda CR-V was third at 336,844 units and the top-ranking crossover. The Ram Pickup and Tesla Model Y completed the top five with 325,348 and 265,000 respectively.

Top Sales Rankings:

  • Ford F-Series led with 561,508 units
  • Chevrolet Silverado recorded 422,713 sales
  • Honda CR-V reached 336,844 units
  • Ram Pickup recorded 325,348 sales
  • Tesla Model Y reached 265,000 units

Toyota stayed strong nationally as well as the Camry and the GMC Sierra. The Toyota Camry finished sixth with 260,684 sales and a gain of 11.2%. The GMC Sierra was seventh with 257,344 sales finishing behind the Camry and the RAV4. The Toyota Tacoma was eighth with 214,875 sales and a gain of 5.1% while the Toyota Corolla finished tenth with 195,141 sales and a gain of 8.4%. This is still showing great numbers in several segments for Toyota.

4. September Sales Show Continued Competition

Toyota’s RAV4 also continued to make up a significant portion of overall sales in the segment, as seen in September 2026 sales totals. Ford F-Series trucks totaled 67,448 sales, while Chevy Silverado sales hit 47,411 in September. Ram trucks fell to 40,768, rounding out the strong full-size truck category. Honda CR-V sales came in at 34,788 in September, up 21.9% year-over-year. Toyota RAV4 sales in September sat at 34,192, just behind Honda.

September Sales Figures:

  • Ford F-Series sold 67,448 units
  • Chevrolet Silverado recorded 47,411 sales
  • Ram Pickup reached 40,768 deliveries
  • Honda CR-V sold 34,788 units
  • Toyota RAV4 recorded 34,192 sales

Tesla also had 34,743 Model Y deliveries in September, catapulting it near the two crossover SUVs. Toyota moved 25,350 Camry sedans off the lot during the month. That’s a robust amount that shows the RAV4 was still pulling in a large chunk of buyers, despite it not trending in a similar way to the CR-V in the year-to-date column. Its volume for the month indicates Toyota still has a winner on its hands.

5. Sixth-Generation RAV4 Transition Creates Production Challenges

The primary cause of the dramatic drop in sales for the RAV4 stems from Toyota’s factory changeover, not a loss of customer demand. The crossover is undergoing a major generational change for the 2026 model year, which includes making it part of the newly all-new sixth-generation design. A major change also happened the automaker would only be offering the new RAV4 with hybrid powertrains. Hybrid production posed additional manufacturing complexities due to factory adjustments and component sourcing.

Production Transition Details:

  • Sixth-generation RAV4 introduced for 2026
  • Toyota moved to a redesigned architecture
  • Gasoline-only powertrains were discontinued
  • Hybrid technology became standard across the lineup
  • Factory adjustments created production bottlenecks

Another reason for the year-to-date 104,470 RAV4 deficiency (29.2%) was the replacement process, which was associated with some restructuring of output inventories and new part requirements, as well as a ramp-up of hybrid vehicles. This meant that during the model changeover, the number of crossovers hitting dealers was limited. It highlights how far-reaching the impact of a key powertrain decision can be on production capacity. Toyota will need to ramp up production to assess how quickly it can recoup RAV4 sales.

6. Toyota’s Hybrid-Only Strategy Offers Better Efficiency

While the transition to the sixth generation has posed short-term production challenges, Toyota’s exclusive hybrid offer for the new RAV4 will bring major advantages to most customers. The new RAV4 hybrid line-up eliminates conventional gasoline-only engine options for all trim levels. The hybrid system on this new RAV4 is able to achieve fuel economy numbers that are said to be better than those of the Honda CR-V hybrid, which could translate to fuel savings in a time of high fuel prices.

Hybrid Strategy Benefits:

  • Every sixth-generation trim uses hybrid power
  • Standard gasoline-only versions were removed
  • Hybrid technology focuses on fuel efficiency
  • Fuel economy exceeds CR-V hybrid variants
  • Buyers receive efficiency across the lineup

Toyota also introduced the new RAV4 offering hybrid technology without putting a significant mark-up on what was already a large entry price. That market allows customers to take advantage of the fuel economy without having to shell out a high premium at the entry price. That idea may pay off for the RAV4 once production volumes ramp up as it will get some additional traction with the new powertrain approach. Although temporarily weighing sales down, Toyota has high hopes for the future of the all-new powertrain.

7. RAV4 Hybrid Pricing Challenges the Honda CR-V

Comparing the base 2026 Toyota RAV4 to the 2027 Honda CR-V exposes the manufacturers’ pricing practices. The base 2026 Toyota RAV4 LE Hybrid is listed for $33,495 (including required destination charges). The base 2027 Honda CR-V LX 2WD, with the standard powertrain, is priced at $33,070 (including destination charges). There’s a difference of only $425 between the two models, and that leaves open the opportunity to go with the Toyota hybrid.

Entry-Level Pricing Details:

  • 2026 Toyota RAV4 LE Hybrid costs $33,495
  • 2027 Honda CR-V LX 2WD costs $33,070
  • Both prices include destination charges
  • RAV4 Hybrid costs only $425 more
  • Toyota offers hybrid power at entry level

The price difference gives Toyota an even bigger value proposition to potential shoppers who are choosing between these two crossovers. Those taking the CR-V with its standard gasoline engine can “upgrade” to the RAV4 hybrid powertrain for just a $425 premium over the base price. Still, it’s a comparison that underscores why Toyota’s choice to make its hybrid an available option rather than standard on the RAV4 is so important.

8. RAV4 Accessories Maintain Strong Consumer Demand

Despite efforts by Toyota to ramp up production of the sixth-generation RAV4, the fifth-generation XA50’s platform remains well loved by consumers. XA50 owners, who purchased an XA50 between 2019 and 2025, are contributing to a robust after-market scene centered on accessories and related products. These items are interior protection equipment, personalization parts, and collectible scale models.

Popular RAV4 Product Categories:

  • Interior protection accessories
  • Vehicle customization products
  • Collectible scale model cars
  • Remote key covers
  • All-weather cargo protection

XA50 owners are investing in products to safeguard their vehicles, enhance daily comfort, and personalize their crossovers. The enduring sales of these products also indicate that demand for the RAV4 does not end with buying a new vehicle. Existing owners are also fueling demand for accessories for their vehicles, with products like console covers, cargo mats, remote key covers, and die-cast vehicles generating interest among buyers on online marketplaces. This secondary market is yet another sign of the RAV4’s existing customer base while Toyota makes the transition to its newest generation.

9. Online Marketplaces Show Demand for RAV4 Products

The number of products related to RAV4 available for sale on online marketplaces provides insight into what customers are purchasing. An online retailer says it has a minuscule 10.99 toy Toyota RAV4 1:32 Alloy Die Cast Model with 4,415 monthly sales on Tik Tok. The leather remote key cover has 3,711 monthly sales with a $4.15 sale price. In another shopping option, the Autorder Center Console Cover for the 2019-2025 RAV4 has a listed price of $25.99.

Marketplace Product Examples:

  • 1:32 RAV4 model sold 4,415 monthly units
  • Leather key cover recorded 3,711 sales
  • Die-cast model was priced at $10.99
  • Console cover was listed at $25.99
  • Cargo mat was priced at $59.99

The rest of the market remains keen to get this kind of product at an affordable price. For instance, a 10-pack electronic cleaning kit at $3.11 has clocked up more than 66,404 monthly Tik Tok sales (MOS). A youth multi-function sports watch at $2.00 posted 13,071 MOS, illustrating how down-to-earth priced and useful product can hit shopping trends. Such numbers also reflect the entire space for RAV4 accessories on online shelves, indicating that new products can do well in the social commerce setting.
