Toyota adds another electric sedan to its growing Beyond Zero range, with the bZ7 showcasing the latest electric vehicle from its GAC Toyota joint venture in China. Following the debut of the bZ7 concept at Auto Shanghai last year, the production version shares the executive-sized proportions of the showcar and is designed to appeal to China’s tech-friendly buyers through a high-tech interior and new electric powertrain software. The bZ7 will take its place among the bZ family of electric vehicles namely the bZ3, bZ3X, bZ4X and bZ5.
The bZ7’s powertrain offers rear-wheel-drive, a choice of batteries, driver assist features and a luxurious interior. The largest battery pack is said to give up to 710km range on China’s CLTC test cycle, while the air suspension and upper-end back seat amenities aim to make the bZ7 appealing to luxury buyers. Designed for China’s fiercely competitive EV market, the bZ7’s future will depend heavily on how its stated range, charging capabilities, features and ownership costs stack up against rival electric and hybrid vehicles.
1. Toyota bZ7 Flagship Design
The Toyota bZ7 has a length of 5,130 mm, wheelbase of 3,020 mm, width of 1,880 mm and height of 1,460 mm. At over 5 metres long, it has a real presence as an executive-sedan and places above the regular mid-size sedan in size. Although the sedan’s styling adopts the hammerhead design language of GAC Toyota, there is a wide light bar on the front of the car, with a semi-enclosed grille. Split LED headlamps adorn the front while a LiDAR scanner on the roof forms part of the vehicle’s hardware for driver-assist systems.
Exterior Design Highlights:
- Measures 5,130 mm long
- Features a 3,020 mm wheelbase
- Uses hammerhead front styling
- Includes split LED headlights
- Offers 19-inch wheels
Clean surfacing takes precedence over ornamental details at the exterior, which adopts metallic and pearlescent finishes for added interest. It also adopts the required wheel-and-tire combination of 235/50 for the tires and wheel, ditching flush pop-out door handles for conventional handles, and using a wheelbase that’s long for a roomy cabin. The combination of these elements gives the bZ7 a regal look while showing Toyota has gone all out to come up with a signature flagship electric sedan for the Chinese market.

2. Electric Motor and Performance
The bZ7 features Toyota’s electric vehicle architecture e-TNGA with a Huawei DriveONE electric motor in the primary configuration. This version of the electric motor is mounted on the rear axle and makes 207kW (around 278hp) and 320Nm of torque. When used in the rear-wheel-drive setup this version is claimed to reach 0-100km/h in 6.4 seconds and can reach a top speed of 180km/h. As a powertrain for a sedan of this nature, it is engineered to give strong, silent electric power while providing a comfortable, technology business suite.
Powertrain Performance Details:
- Rear-wheel-drive configuration available
- Motor produces 207 kW
- Output equals roughly 278 horsepower
- Torque reaches 320 Nm
- Top speed reaches 180 km/h
A dual-motor all-wheel-drive option is also offered, offering better grip and a different play in the way it drives. Based on the specifications available, it offers just under 245 horsepower and a 7.5 second sprint to 100 km/h with the same 180 km/h top speed. Final specs for each version should be checked as the powertrain configurations can vary, but the choice of driving modes accessible through steering wheel switches should enable the driver to tailor the experience somewhat to personal taste. Overall, the combination of electric power and selectable modes means the bZ7 can cover a wide range of driving styles.

3. Battery Options and Driving Range
The bZ7 is offered with a range of capacity and chemistry options: CALB lithium iron phosphate and CALB NMC battery packs. Batteries offered are a 65 kWh battery, 71.35 kWh and flagship 88.13 kWh pack. The 71.35 kWh is claimed to be good for 600 km (373 miles) CLTC range in China, with the larger pack rated gross capacity of 88.13 kWh and net usable capacity of 84.0 kWh (hence 4.1 kWh buffer).
Battery Specifications Overview:
- Standard battery listed at 65 kWh
- Mid-size pack measures 71.35 kWh
- Flagship pack measures 88.13 kWh
- Usable flagship capacity reaches 84.0 kWh
- Battery options include LFP and NMC
The bZ7 700 model with the largest battery says it is able to offer a combined driving range of 680-710 km (423-439 miles) on the CLTC test cycle. The claimed energy consumption on that same test cycle is about 12.0kWh/100km (62.1 miles). Real-world range, of course, depends on things like speed, temperature, terrain, how many people are in the vehicle, and if you run the heater or AC. These estimates suggest the highway range is around 255-275 miles at 70 mph, dropping to around 215-250 miles in very cold conditions, but these are only estimates.

4. Fast Charging and Home Charging
The bZ7 offers DC rapid charging up to a maximum of 150 kW. Estimated to take between 27 to 32 mins depending on conditions from 10-80 per cent (average power of 131 kW during charge). Estimated to take from completely empty 100 per cent using DC power is approximately 80 mins. The charging speed will depend on a variety of factors, including the state of charge of the battery and how warm the battery is, the output of the power supply, and how the car’s charging management system responds.
Charging Performance Details:
- Peak DC charging reaches 150 kW
- Ten-to-80 percent takes 27-32 minutes
- Full DC charging takes about 80 minutes
- Average session power reaches 131 kW
- Charging speed varies with conditions
At home, the bZ7 will come with a built-in AC charger which supplies power at a maximum rate of 11kW. A full AC charge from empty to full will take around seven hours and 38 minutes with the right level 2 charging equipment installed on the property. The charge port is located on the left rear quarter so back-in parking in some charge bays might be easier if space allows. It is worth investigating the current available at home before setting off on a programme of regular drivers to a community charge point, to have a decent weekly top-up.
5. Bidirectional Power and Chassis
Another feature supported on the bZ7 is Vehicle-to-Load, which enables the traction battery to provide power to appropriate external devices. This could come in handy for outdoor adventures, certain appliances, or emergency power sources within the limits of the system. The item below reports an output of 6600 kW, although a figure of this magnitude seems quite high for a V2L system on a passenger car and this should be double-checked against some official spec before we publish. This just adds a whole new level of usefulness to the vehicle.
Utility and Chassis Features:
- Vehicle-to-Load power capability
- External equipment can use battery energy
- Double-wishbone front suspension
- Multi-link rear suspension
- Disc brakes on all four wheels
A multi-link rear suspension is paired with a double-wishbone front suspension. Coil springs and regular dampers are available in standard versions and disc brakes at all four wheels provide stopping power. Recouped energy from braking in addition to torque from the electric motors is designed to help take some of the pressure off the friction brakes and restore energy while helping ensure a smooth yet practical ride for a large electric sedan. Make sure you know exactly what’s included at each trim level before drawing comparisons.
6. Regenerative Braking and Air Suspension
The bZ7 has various levels of regenerative braking settings for the driver to choose how the vehicle slows when the accelerator is released. The document lists these as automatic regeneration, blended pedal driving and accelerator-pedal-only (for one-pedal driving). It is said to have five levels of adjustable regenerative braking. When in either of the first two driving modes, the car can use regenerative braking to slow and then use its traditional friction brakes if further stopping power is necessary.
Driving Control Options:
- Automatic regeneration mode
- Blended braking operation
- One-pedal driving capability
- Five regenerative levels
- Friction brakes support full stops
For a smoother ride, some models get dual-chamber air suspension with electronically controlled adaptive dampers. Road-scanning technology detects uneven surfaces ahead and aims to pre-adjust the damping before the wheels go over a bump. An Easy Entry feature can lift the body when you open the doors and then lower it back when they close. An optional feature can lower the rear suspension to improve cargo loading. Compatibility depends on the body style and model.

7. Premium Interior and Rear Comfort
The bZ7 interior features a simplified design with a floating center console between the front seats. Premium finishes include perforated white leather seats and consoles, woodgrain accents and customizable ambient lighting. Front seats feature power adjustments for position, recline, lumbar, and height adjustment, with heating and cooling controls as standard; multi-mode massage may be added. The heated, flat-bottom steering wheel has tilt and reach adjustment, physical control switches, and an easy entry/exit retract function.
Interior Comfort Features:
- Floating center console design
- Perforated white leather seating
- Real wood interior trim
- Heated and ventilated front seats
- Optional front-seat massage
The back seats comprise a three-person bench, with heating on the side seats. On higher trim levels, the back seats have the choice of reclining in a zero-gravity position and also include massage. By having the massage and zero-gravity feature integrated, the experience can be more executive-focused on longer drives. Cabin storage is limited to a glovebox and pockets on all four doors. The compromise of comfort, storage and aesthetics helps make the bZ7 more compelling than the bog-standard family electric sedan.
8. Infotainment and Connected Technology
The bZ7 is equipped with a digital cockpit centrepiece consisting of a 12.3-instrument display and a 15.6-in central touch screen. A head-up display offers navigation and driver information. It is claimed to be the first Toyota vehicle on the market to deploy Huawei’s HarmonyOS Cockpit 5.0. The vehicle has an in-built connected feature which is compatible with the Xiaomi smart-device ecosystem with an app store for third-party applications and satellite navigation with traffic information, route planning and destination support for charging.
Digital Technology Highlights:
- 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster
- 15.6-inch central touchscreen
- Windshield head-up display
- HarmonyOS Cockpit 5.0
