Lopsided Legends: Cars That Mastered Asymmetrical Design

Automotive design aesthetics has long been dominated by the belief that symmetry is the ultimate goal. Beautiful balance and attractive shapes have always drawn car lovers. Designers have been creating beautiful shapes since the dawn of the automotive industry. However, there are those who have gone against the grain. Unusual cars had to be built, sometimes to meet specific needs. Sometimes, they did it just for the fun of it. Aerodynamic properties, driver comfort, and overall design elegance were the reasons why manufacturers went with an unexpected design.

While many car designers have been busy shaping the automotive world with their beautiful creations, there were those who sought to innovate. Some of the most successful asymmetric cars have been built to serve a specific purpose. Take racing cars, for example. Often, they have been built in a way that puts driver safety first. This usually means that their design cannot be traditional. Other manufacturers sought to do the same, only to find that asymmetry was the best way to introduce a unique twist to the ordinary design. Some cars have been built for comfort, with strange mechanisms placed in cockpits to enhance driver experience. Whatever the reason may be, these automotive oddities have been making car lovers go wow for decades.

The list below contains some of the most interesting cars that have ever been built. Some of them were racing machines that have been dominating circuits throughout their careers. Others were concept cars, hinting at the direction the manufacturer wanted to take the industry. A few of them were regular passenger vehicles, only to gain popularity amongst drivers and designers alike. Unusual cars can be seen in different shapes and sizes, serving different purposes and pleasing car lovers for decades.

1. 1921 Scott Sociable

The 1921 Scott Sociable is one of the first asymmetrical cars in the world. Inspired by machine guns carriers built during the First World War, this peculiar three-wheeled vehicle was the first to deviate from the norm of a central front wheel. The Scott Sociable stands among the earliest examples of asymmetrical automotive engineering. Originally inspired by machine-gun carriers developed during the First World War, this unusual three-wheeled vehicle departed dramatically from conventional automotive layouts.

The unique layout of the Scott Sociable was destined to grab all the attention. It had an incredible design that set it apart from other vehicles of that time. After Scott’s failure to sell the model to the military, they tried to reposition the car for private use.

Produced in 1921 after a few years of research that started in 1916, the company only managed to build about 200 cars before it went bankrupt in 1924. Although the Scott Sociable was not a commercial success, its legacy of being one of the first asymmetrical cars will live forever in history.

2. 1939 Citroën 2CV Prototype

Before it became a global bestseller, the 2CV was only a concept. Known as the TPV (Très Petite Véhicule), the 2CV prototype was made to meet the French agricultural demands. This simplified miniature car only had one headlight, making it look asymmetrical and different from all other models on the market. Everything about the 2CV prototype was about minimizing costs while fulfilling customer needs.

Citroën wanted the prototype to carry two passengers and one small bag comfortably. They also made sure that the 2CV prototype had a good ground clearance to navigate through rough rural roads. The company built the prototype using corrugated aluminum sheets and removed every unnecessary detail to make it light. Even the seats were made of suspended canvas fabric instead of having a fully padded surface, reducing the weight and manufacturing costs considerably.

They built about 250 prototypes before moving on to the production model. Although the production model did away with most of the prototype features, it still retained some of its classic characteristics such as having a single headlamp. This iconic TPV model will forever be part of Citroën’s rich history of engineering marvels.

3. 1951 Piero Taruffi “Italcorsa/Tarf II” Speed Record-Car

Designed and built by the legendary Piero Taruffi, the Tarf II was a masterpiece that featured a unique asymmetrical body. This special car was meant to achieve ultimate speeds. Therefore, Tarf II had a special aerodynamic body design that reduced drag while allowing the powerful engine to produce more power.

The Tarf II was powered by a supercharged 1,720cc Maserati straight-four engine linked to a chain-driven rear axle. In addition, it had a unique aircraft-like control system that eliminated the use of a steering wheel. Instead, Taruffi only had to use his hands to control the car. It was a crazy but a genius move, considering the purpose of the car was to attain the highest possible speeds.

The crazy concept worked, as Tarf II recorded an unbelievable seven speed records between 1951 and 1952. Some of the many achievements included recording the fastest flying mile at 185.49mph and the fastest flying kilometer at 180.55mph. The car was so fast and powerful that it also recorded endurance records for a 2,000cc car.

4. 1954 Jaguar D-Type

The Jaguar D-Type is a prime example of motorsport engineering brilliance, as the model’s unique shape was the result of specific aerodynamic features. The manufacturer’s engineers drew inspiration from airplane building to develop a sports car with a body that weighed as little as possible while being aerodynamically optimized. Such design features helped the car to overcome the challenges of endurance racing.

Nevertheless, it dominated the race in the following two years, which proved the efficiency of Jaguar’s design and engineering concept. 5. 1956 Lotus Eleven

The Lotus Eleven was inspired by the engineering philosophy of minimalism and lightness, as the model could set remarkable racing results with a relatively small power-to-weight ratio. The asymmetrical body design of the car was complemented by the functional lightweight design, which contributed to the overall performance of the vehicle. Introduced in 1956, the Lotus Eleven was one of the most prominent sports cars in the company’s history, as its racing versions were capable of achieving remarkable results on circuits.

6. 1957 Maserati 200SI

Its design was built around a formidable 2,953cc V12 engine and achieved a happy marriage of proven chassis engineering, performance and an excellent reliability package. The car retained its famous elegance while also taking advantage of minor, but well thought out, asymmetrical elements to complement its competitive styling. All of the parts embodied Ferrari’s unyielding quest for perfection in racing.

8. 1960 Plymouth XNR Concept

The performance was as good as the appearance of the car. The XNR achieved roughly 146 miles per hour in tests and the subsequent testing and modifications brought its top speed in excess of 150 miles per hour. It never came into production but the one-off idea was one of Chrysler’s most successful show cars which went on to be well known with its auction sale.

9. 1961 Plymouth Asimmetrica

The Plymouth Asimmetrica was the next step in the evolution of asymmetrical car design with a more sophisticated and classy look. Although the origins of its design have been the subject of debate, this car had elegant lines and meticulously blended asymmetrical features. The Asimmetrica was a more moderate option than XNR, and seemed more like a realistic production sports car. Its well-thought-out design showed how asymmetry can add a touch of elegance without dominating the composition.

The Asimmetrica debuted at the 1961 Turin Motor Show, and eventually went into several private collections. Consequently, after a careful restoration, it was presented at the prestigious Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance, and more recently, gathered a lot of interest in the auction. Today, it remains one of the most revered concept cars of all times and is still regarded as a rare find due to its unique design and aesthetic.

10. 1963 Gene Winfield Strip Star

Gene Winfield’s Strip Star was a trademark of American custom car culture in the 1960s where creativity and experimentation ruled the day. It was designed not only as a show car, but as a true drag racer as well, featuring both high-tech styling and performance. With an impressive Ford V8 and a 1946 Ford chassis, Strip Star showcased the potential of unconventional engineering to transform standard car parts into a truly unique custom-built vehicle.

The most readily recognisable of its features was its asymmetrical cockpit layout. The driver went under a large canopy that rose up, with the passenger side of the car protected under an electric tonneau. The unconventional elements added to the vehicle not only gave it a futuristic look, but also added to its individuality among the custom-built automobiles.

The Strip Star continued to be relevant even after its original construction. Because of its advanced styling, it made a memorable appearance in Back to the future Part II as a symbol of futuristic transportation. Over the years, Gene Winfield kept this wonderful invention alive, keeping it one of the best examples of functional asymmetrical custom car design even today.

11. 1978 Fiat Ritmo/Strada

In several countries the vehicle was sold as the Strada, and the Fiat Ritmo proved that sensible asymmetry could be integrated into a functional mass-produced car. It was designed as a family hatchback which was affordable and it managed to strike a balance between efficiency, functionality and distinctive styling. This sporty Ritmo 105 TC featured a slight off-center bonnet vent, which added a unique character to the car amongst numerous versions. A well thought-out design feature that demonstrated that even small asymmetrical features could have a strong impact.

Distinctive Styling Features:

The Ritmo has had significant commercial success reaching over 1.7 million units produced during its production life. Most versions emphasized on the practicality and affordability but the 105 TC didn’t have any of those qualities as it had a unique offset bonnet vent. This is a nice little feature that added character and didn’t interfere with everyday driving.

After the facelift in 1982,Fiatt changed the asymmetrical bonnet vent to a more traditional format. This has made the original 105 TC models more sought after by collectors and enthusiasts. The Ritmo keeps in style the idea that elegance in car design can be subtle but still create memorable designs without sacrificing functionality.

12. 1984 Ferrari Testarossa

The Ferrari Testarossa was one of the most iconic performance vehicles of the 1980s, known for its sleek design and innovative engineering. Its dramatic side strakes were a popular feature but one of its most distinctive features was higher up on the body. The early versions of the “Monospecchio” had a single exterior mirror, mirroring the one mounted high on the driver’s A pillar, making one of Ferrari’s most iconic examples of an asymmetrical vehicle. It was a strange addition, but in a short span it became a part of the model’s myth.

Iconic Ferrari Design:

This made for a raised platform that offered a view of the back of the car, as there was no immediate need for a mirror on the side of the car. The choice was a little unusual but shows that Ferrari were no afraid of using innovative engineering to make it functional.

The innate nature of the Ferrari reflected the customer preference and later when the car was produced it was equipped with a classic twin mirror system. The Testarossa also had an asymmetrical front spoiler opening, which helped to give it better airflow to the air conditioning condenser. All these well-designed elements proved the potential of performance and intentional asymmetry working side by side in a legendary supercar.

13. 1989 Ford Fiesta Urba Concept

The Ford Fiesta Urba concept looked at what asymmetrical design could offer beyond just being eye-catching and looked at ways to make it more convenient in everyday use. The concept, bright yellow in colour, was developed to become a futuristic city car with innovative engineering solutions, designed to address the practical requirements of urban drivers. All of its design choices demonstrated Ford’s desire to make compact cars more useful in today’s life. The Urba was a very unique package, combining creativity and functionality.

Urban Practicality:

  • Asymmetrical door configuration.
  • City-focused vehicle concept.
  • The use of interior space for storage ideas.
  • Everyday convenience emphasized.
  • New Compact Car Design.

It was most interesting for the door layout, which featured one big door in the driver’s front and two small doors in the front passenger side. This arrangement made the rear seat easier to access, and provided better access based upon the parking situation. The design is not just about style, but about functionality, reflecting the vehicle’s role in an urban environment.

The Urba’s cabin was also designed with a number of practical features, such as a compartment for storing food at a controlled temperature and spaces for daily use items. Although the idea did not come to fruition, it’s a great example of what can be achieved with the creative use of asymmetrical design for convenience and usability.

14. 1989 Land Rover Discovery

The initial Land Rover Discovery was a proof that the functional engineering decisions can make one of the most recognizable asymmetrical vehicle designs. It was designed to have a high level of versatility for use by a family of four or more, and to be both practical and comfortable for carrying cargo and still be an outstanding off-road vehicle. These were overcome by engineers’ introduction of a number of practical asymmetrical design features which later became iconic elements of the Discovery’s identity. The final conclusion was a car with a form that was dictated by its functions.

Functional Rear Design:

  • Side-mounted spare wheel.
  • This is the layout of the rearmost window, which is offset.

Land Rover moved the spare tyre to the side-hung rear door, to provide enough room for optional third row seating. This hands-on approach allowed for space maximization in the interior of the vehicle, and still provided easy access to the spare wheel in off-road conditions. Engineers then created an offset rear window to give better visibility around the spare tyre which was fitted to the outside of the vehicle so there was no compromise on the vehicle’s style.

The spare wheel was moved later, but the offset rear window was retained as it was one of the Discovery’s hallmark design features. What started as a practical solution for engineering grew into a design tradition. The original Discovery is still proving that the thoughtful use of problem solving techniques can create timeless and recognizable automotive design.
