GM Doubles Down on V8 Power as Massive Investment Reshapes Its Next-Generation Engines

Despite the ever-growing focus on the electrified automotive future, the gasoline enthusiasts among us have some good news. General Motors is sticking by its dedication to good ol’ V-8 engines. As car companies flock to build EVs and commit to electrification in the future, GM is sinking millions of dollars into refining its ever-successful small-block V-8s. There’s no indication that large displacement V-8 engines will abandon the American truck, SUV, and performance segment any time soon.

A significant investment of around US$1.7 billion (or A$2.7 billion) is the core element of the strategy. These investments will serve to upgrade manufacturing processes at powertrain facilities and support manufacturing plant infrastructures throughout America. It’s a very clear signal that there still is a role to be played by the combustion engine especially if, and the development of, the engineering is leading to continually improvements in efficiency, endurance and power outputs.

A large portion of that greater initiative, $918 million spread over four significant manufacturing plants, is specifically aimed at increasing production of the V-8 engine (of which $854 million are aimed at the V-8, the remaining $64 million toward the electrification infrastructure needed for the vehicle and battery pack, not the electric drive motor itself). This bringsGM’s reported total to over $37 billion on its U.S. Manufacturing plants since 2013.

1. GM Invests Heavily in Future V-8 Production

The latest announcement by GM clearly demonstrates the scale of GM’s investment into the forthcoming V-8 engines. The funding package total of $918 Million will cover investment at four separate plants which all play equally vital roles in the company’s powertrain strategy as a whole, these four plants working together in order to support development and production of the forthcoming sixth-generation small-block family of engines.

  • Defiance supports casting production upgrades
  • Facilities prepare for evolving technologies
  • GM balances combustion and electric development

The biggest chunk of the investment goes to Flint Engine Operations in Flint, Michigan, with $579 million which goes toward the final assembly of sixth-generation small-block V-8 family engines. The Bay City GPS facility in Bay City, Michigan is going to receive $216 million and that is in support of producing key internal components that include the cam shaft, connecting rod. What this highlights is how GM is building the engine sup\[ply chain to support its forthcoming engines.

Defiance Operations in Ohio gets $47 million for block castings. Defiance will also get an $8 million casting development cell that it says should play an increased role in future EV plans. The investment demonstrates that GM is modernizing traditional manufacturing while simultaneously putting manufacturing space in place for future automotive technologies, choosing neither the old path nor the new over the other, but planning capacity for both combustion engine and EV manufacturing.

2. Tonawanda Prepares for the Gen VI V-8 Era

To make crucial intake manifolds and fuel rails Rochester Operations in Rochester, New York will be provided $12 million. Also, that facility will get $56 million to produce EV Battery Pack Cool Lines, which indicates the balance between normal engine hardware and future EV technology. That decision is according to the overall strategy for GM which supports both two powertrain technologies with the same level.

Tonawanda looks set for a large part in the history of small-blocks GM.

The Tonawanda facility is an 87-year-old manufacturing behemoth totaling roughly 3.1 million square feet, is presently responsible for production of the Gen V GM V-8, and in the past, made both the Ecotec Gen III 2.0-liter turbo and 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engines. The expansion will enable this veteran manufacturing plant to make high-tech powertrains well into the future.

3. New Displacements Could Reshape the Small-Block Lineup

Technical details for the upcoming generations of GM’s new engines are of major interest not only for automotive enthusiasts, but also for those in the automotive industry. GM Authority claims that GM will bring out the pushrod Gen 6 small-block V8 family first with two different displacements. Production insiders seem to know some about the engine family, as it will likely be offered as both 5.7L and 6.6L units.

Two separate displacements may offer the ability to specify a wide range of power, economy, and ability to meet a multitude of truck and SUVs applications. The lower displacement might support high-volume, light-duty trucks; while the larger one could support a heavier duty-truck and perhaps even a “high performance” version. These new architectures will eventually retire some current engines from GMs lineups.

The precise engine specs and vehicle placement have not been confirmed, however. As spokesperson for GM confirmed to GM Authority the company indeed confirmed a six-generation of small block engines however it declined to discuss product particulars. With very few official details, consumer expectations for these forthcoming engines remain high for greater power density, higher efficiency, and better emissions.

4. Efficiency Remains a Major Engineering Priority

The 5.7-liter V8 is designed to be central to full-size, mainstream light-duty trucks-the 2025-and-beyond Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. During a past comment, President Mark Reuss offered up the notion of next-gen GM engines providing a measurable increase in efficiency; those could prove crucial in helping the gas-guzzling V8 trucks keep up.

During GM Investor Day in 2024, Reuss said that “more significant efficiencies are possible for upcoming full-size trucks.” In addition, he showed that “a forthcoming generation of full-size trucks will realize 4-6% at launch compared to the 2022 mid-cycle improvements.” Moreover, he demonstrated that efficiencies are around 10-12% greater than the last truck generation, which rolled out in 2019.

Some present fuel economy figures help to add context as to the difficulty faced by GM’s engineers. A 2024 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 4WD powered by a 5.3L V-8 is rated at 15/19/17 city/highway/combined mpg. A 6.2L V-8 achieves a like 17 combined mpg, whereas the turbo gas- and the diesels get a lot better combined mileage figures. GM’s new generation of V-8s will have to balance the required capability with some better fuel economy.

Furthermore, the 6.2-liter LT2 V-8 and the supercharged 6.2-liter LT4 V-8 are listed as well, which applies the potential changes to major vehicles throughout GM’s lineup. By moving towards a potentially smaller 5.7-liter and larger 6.6-liter Gen 6 engines, it may give GM the ability to pursue a common engine across its trucks, SUVs, and performance applications.

The expected new engines will also reportedly contain revisions aimed at increasing their durability and long-term running health. Oil viscosity recommendations could solve many problems that contribute to the reliability complaints voiced by current owners of the V-8. While it’s a new generation of design, the pushrod engine architecture will feature the traditional overhead valve layout and 90-degree cylinder angle defining classic GM small-blocks.

6. GM’s Gen 6 Family Includes More Than Pushrod Engines

Since the dual-overhead-cam designs found in the sixth generation of small-block engines revealGM’s commitment to continued high-performance engine technology, the family itself deserves attention. The Gemini family premiered in the C8 Corvette Z06 as the naturally aspirating 5.5 liter LT6 engine; the racing engine’s twin-turbo forced induction setup appeared later in the forms of the LT7, offered for the Corvette ZR1 andZR1X.

Gen 6 Technology Covers Multiple Architectures:

  • Gemini engines use advanced overhead cams
  • LT6 powers the Corvette Z06
  • LT7 adds twin-turbocharged performance capability
  • Pushrod engines serve utility vehicles
  • Small-block identity connects both architectures

Unlike the technology on current Gemini V-8s that rely on advanced dual-overhead-cam engineering, expected truck and full-size SUV engines will likely still use traditional overhead valvetrain pushed by an overhead camshaft. This indicates that the new sixth-gen V-8 pushrod engines will be part of GM’s wider sixth-gen V-8 strategy, which will house a couple different V-8 architectures. This is what will enable GM to offer engines that suit the needs of sports car performance, and truck and full-size SUV utility respectively.

The engines have the family name Small-Block owing to their common 4.4-inch bore spacing with the GM Small-Block V8 family. Gemini engines are hand-assembled in the Performance Build Center within the Bowling Green Assembly Plant in Kentucky. The plant is still inextricably linked with Corvette assembly and remains a significant aspect of GM’s performance engineering history.

There is also potential for that larger, 6.6-liter pushrod V8, the big engine known now primarily for its heavy-duty truck and SUV duty, to make its way into something a bit more exotic. A rumor shared by, from what we hear, an insider in a C8 Corvette group and re-posted by Torque News, is that the engine may show up under the hood of the C8 Corvette Grand Sport.

Performance tuned versions of the 6.6 Liter motor are also reportedly set to make their way into next-generation Stingray and E-Ray Corbin cars. It has now also emerged that a wide body Corvette with a concealed engine and Grand Sport elements has been spotted on the public roads adding even more interest in the direction of the next installment of the Corbin-platform car.

Although those assignment predictions are not proven facts at this stage; the indication is about how adaptable the new V-8 architecture from GM is capable of being, such that one potential configuration – a potent pushrod motor, displaced at 6.6-litres; would be capable of being utilized for tough truck application but also capable of being utilized with good sports-car characteristics for application in sports models. No official assignment or plan like such has come from GM so the ultimate line of automobiles to receive new motors are to be confirmed.

8. Trucks and SUVs Will Remain the Core Applications

Many of GM’s most critical vehicles in North America might end up getting a variant of the Gen 6 OHV V-8 engine. This plug-in hybrid will have the capability of joining the GMC Sierra line up in late 2007, after a traditional gasoline option will have entered the showrooms. If this particular setup, called Sierra buyers it is possible the it will eventually also make it into the Chevrolet Silverado’s. This will provide General Motors with yet another option, besides their known gasoline trucks, that will allow them to introduce electrification to their line-up of pickup trucks.

The current turbocharged 2.7L Inline 4 cylinder L3B is expected to live on within a number of lower trims. Again, GM officials reiterated their stance that customer demand will continue to influence how long V-8 engines will continue to live in GM vehicles outside the U.S.

The V8 has also had effects outside America, like in Australia, where the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 remains the only large ute offered in Australia equipped with an under-hood V8; offerings in rivals of Australia’s larger utility market tended to feature only V6 power. Once more GM insisted that customer demand alone will dictate the continued existence ofV8 engines in vehicles GM sells beyond U.S. Borders.
