George Barris Built 14 Custom Cars That Brought Movie Style to the Road

The King of the Kustomizers, George Barris, turned ordinary cars into things that have ever existed and thus created their own aesthetic revolution. George Barris’ life (1925-2015) was dedicated to working out solutions in automotive design since he was a kid; and as time goes he managed to bridge the realm of custom made cars, often related with old school hot rodding traditions, with the glamorous world of Hollywood cinema. Barris’ creations were much more than simple paint job variations, or chrome decorations. His style was characterized by the restructuring of car body lines, interior redesigns, custom mechanical parts implementation, or by assigning a definite, often thematic, identity to every single car.

His creations included winning roadsters, show cars, movie “hero” cars, concept land speed vehicles and vehicles for television. His cars were crafted from everything from sophisticated Italian and European sports cars to workhorse American sedans, funeral vehicles, trucks and sport-utility vehicles. To Barris, every car was a starting point, something to be reshaped through unique fabrication, eye-popping colors, unconventional mechanics and show-stopping flair – machines built to serve not only as transportation but as entertainment and marketing opportunities and as public works of art.

For a whole generation of car and truck fans, a Barris-built vehicle meant something Special. After the original Batmobile in 1966 and its follow-up vehicle the Munster Koach and the Munstermobile proved to be showstoppers and television stars, Barris’s vehicles would inspire custom builders of show cars and restylers for the next half-century. Barris’s machines in other categories have pioneered back-up cameras, digital dashboards, steering and control apparatus concealed from the usual positions, and incredibly sophisticated stereo systems. Following are ten sections devoted to fourteen representative rides, clustered when appropriate. Together they illustrate the innovative vision and impressive skills that Barris brought to the American automotive lexicon.

1. The 1966 Batmobile

The 1966 Batmobile remains one of the most recognizable television vehicles ever created. Barris built it for the Batman television series using the abandoned 1955 Lincoln Futura concept car, which he reportedly purchased for one dollar. With only three weeks available, his team transformed the futuristic Ford prototype into a superhero machine. Black paint, orange-red accents, dramatic fins, radiused wheel openings, and a flame-producing exhaust gave the vehicle a theatrical identity that matched the colorful visual language of the television program.

Features Defining the Iconic Batmobile:

  • Began as Lincoln Futura concept
  • Completed within only three weeks
  • Featured dramatic superhero-inspired bodywork
  • Included functional crime-fighting theatrical props
  • Produced memorable rear exhaust flames

Barris incorporated several functional props designed to support Batman’s fictional crime-fighting equipment. These included a Bat-Ray projector, Bat-Phone, dashboard controls, and a rear section styled to resemble a jet turbine. The flame effect was reportedly constructed using a five-gallon paint can within the exhaust arrangement. Although many features were theatrical rather than practical, their integration made the car feel like a believable piece of superhero technology. Its strong silhouette also allowed viewers to recognize it immediately from almost any camera angle.

Four versions were ultimately built to meet different production needs, including regular driving, stunt work, crash sequences, and special effects. The original remained in Barris’s personal collection for decades before being sold at auction. Its legacy reaches far beyond television nostalgia because the vehicle demonstrated how effectively a custom car could become a character in its own right. The Batmobile remains a defining example of Barris’s ability to combine existing automotive design, inventive fabrication, and memorable visual storytelling.

2. The 1958 Custom Corvette

Lee Sims of Accessories International commissioned Barris to transform a Corvette into a showpiece that could promote the company’s products. Drawing inspiration from Bill Mitchell’s XP-700 Chevrolet concept, Barris extended the headlights and redesigned the rear with Buick taillights. Aqua Blue paint emphasized the custom bodywork and helped the car attract attention throughout the show circuit. It earned top honors at the Los Angeles Arena Show and appeared in publications including Motor Trend and Vette, establishing its importance within Corvette customization.

Custom Details Shaping Both Corvettes:

  • Featured striking custom body finishes

  • Earned major automotive show recognition

A restoration completed in 2019 gave the custom Corvette a 1964 Chevrolet 327 V8 while preserving its distinctive Barris styling. The updated powerplant made the vehicle usable without removing the details that had defined its show-car identity. Its combination of Chevrolet foundations, concept-inspired bodywork, and carefully integrated accessories reflected Barris’s ability to reshape an established sports car without making it completely unrecognizable. The finished automobile remained clearly related to the Corvette while presenting a more dramatic interpretation of its original design.

Powerboat racer Bob Nordskog requested an even more versatile Corvette known as the Asteroid. Barris transformed a 1962 model with a fiberglass hood covering a 400-horsepower V8, an extended nose, a bladed grille, front-fender exhaust headers, and a bronze finish. He also removed the rear-window divider to create a cleaner profile. Nordskog wanted a car capable of street use, racing, and winning show trophies, and the Asteroid combined all three ambitions within one highly individualized performance machine.

3. The Esso 67-X

Barris created the Esso 67-X for Canada’s centennial celebration in 1967. Built on an Oldsmobile Toronado platform, the vehicle was envisioned as a futuristic family road cruiser rather than a conventional show car. Its body was stretched to create proportions comparable with a modern full-size sport utility vehicle. The front-wheel-drive Toronado foundation provided a useful starting point because it allowed Barris to develop an unusually spacious passenger compartment without having to package a conventional driveshaft beneath the cabin.

Ideas Behind the Esso 67-X:

The interior was designed around comfortable long-distance travel. Barris incorporated a seating arrangement that allowed front occupants to face one another for conversation while the vehicle was stationary. An integrated picnic cooler supported family journeys and roadside breaks, emphasizing the car’s recreational purpose. These details reflected a period when designers were beginning to imagine automobiles as mobile living spaces rather than simple transportation. The Esso 67-X presented that idea through a highly customized platform created specifically for extended road trips.

Passenger entertainment received equal attention through the installation of dual radios and two tape decks. Such equipment was unusual when most vehicles offered only a basic dashboard radio. Barris used these features to create a more sociable and flexible cabin for families traveling across long distances. The Esso 67-X may not be as widely remembered as his Hollywood vehicles, but it demonstrated his ability to apply custom design to practical travel needs while still producing a striking promotional automobile.

4. Ala Kart

Ala Kart began as a 1929 Ford roadster pickup belonging to Barris’s close friend Richard Peters. Mounted on a Model A chassis, the vehicle underwent extensive changes that transformed its humble utility origins into a polished competition show car. Barris reshaped the pickup bed, created peaked fenders, and added dual exhaust pipes exiting from the sides. The finished proportions retained the personality of an early hot rod while presenting a level of refinement and visual balance rarely associated with modified pickup-based builds.

Engineering and Styling Within Ala Kart:

  • Began as Ford roadster pickup
  • Used a modified Model A chassis
  • Featured reshaped bed and fenders
  • Combined Hemi power with air-suspension
  • Won prestigious roadster awards twice

Power came from a Dodge Hemi V8, giving the roadster genuine mechanical strength beneath its carefully finished body. Barris also incorporated an advanced air-suspension arrangement using four coil springs and airbags. This system helped control the vehicle’s stance and demonstrated that appearance and engineering could support one another. Instead of treating the build as a decorative shell, the team developed a complete custom machine in which the engine, suspension, bodywork, and interior contributed to a unified identity.

Inside, white Naugahyde upholstery was paired with black velvet pleats and chrome beading. The dramatic contrast matched the exterior’s polished presentation without overwhelming the compact cabin. Ala Kart won the prestigious America’s Most Beautiful Roadster award twice, an achievement that secured its place in custom-car history. Appearances in films and automotive magazines expanded its audience beyond show attendees. The vehicle remains a benchmark for builders seeking to combine early hot-rod proportions with sophisticated craftsmanship and imaginative mechanical detailing.

5. Barris’ Ferrari 308 GTS

Barris purchased a Ferrari 308 GTS in 1978 and treated the respected Italian sports car as a personal hot-rod project. He added wide flared fenders, exceptionally broad wheels, and custom gold paint. The original pop-up headlights were moved below the front bumper and restyled to resemble those of the Ferrari 512 BB. A redesigned grille and custom front and rear spoilers completed the exterior, creating a more aggressive interpretation of Ferrari’s original mid-engine design.

Custom Elements Across Both Sports Cars:

  • Added wider aggressively flared fenders
  • Used distinctive gold exterior finishes
  • Redesigned major front styling elements
  • Introduced advanced electronic cabin technology
  • Attracted several prominent celebrity owners

The cabin displayed Barris’s interest in emerging electronics. He installed a digital dashboard, Sony television, and integrated backup camera, all of which were highly unusual in a late-1970s road car. These additions made the Ferrari more than a bodywork experiment because they introduced technology that would become common decades later. Barris respected the car’s performance foundation while adapting its appearance and equipment to his personal taste, demonstrating that even a prestigious European sports car could become material for American custom-car thinking.

The Barrister applied similar theatrical ambition to a C3 Corvette. Barris lengthened the chassis, removed familiar Chevrolet styling cues, and added an extended hood, split windshield, tapered tail, decorative external exhaust pipes, and gold radiator grille. Its glossy black body and gold trim attracted celebrity owners and admirers, including James Caan, Bo Derek, Sammy Davis Jr., and Liberace. The Barrister showed how Barris could transform a recognizable sports-car foundation into a dramatic personal luxury vehicle suited to Hollywood personalities.

6. The Munster Koach

The Munster Koach was designed for the 1960s television series The Munsters with styling assistance from Tom Daniel. Barris’s team combined three Ford Model T bodies to create an 18-foot vehicle resting on a custom 133-inch frame. Its unusual length allowed the entire fictional family to travel together while giving the car a hearse-like presence suited to the show’s comic gothic atmosphere. The build reportedly cost $18,000 and required extensive fabrication to create its elaborate exterior details.

Gothic Features of the Munster Koach:

  • Combined three Model T bodies
  • Measured approximately eighteen feet long
  • Featured handcrafted rolled-steel body scrollwork
  • Used powerful Ford Cobra V8
  • Included theatrical horror-inspired interior details

Approximately 500 hours were devoted to hand-forming the rolled-steel scrollwork decorating the body. Power came from a 289-cubic-inch Ford Cobra V8 sourced from a 1966 Mustang GT. The engine featured ten chrome Stromberg carburetors, Jahns high-compression pistons, and Bobby Barr headers. These components gave the Koach authentic hot-rod engineering beneath its theatrical appearance. Barris understood that a television vehicle could look outrageous while still benefiting from mechanical details that appealed to knowledgeable automotive enthusiasts.

The interior featured blood-red velvet upholstery, while spiderweb-shaped headlights and handcrafted casket handles extended the horror theme throughout the vehicle. Every decorative element supported the fictional world of The Munsters without turning the car into an immobile prop. Its proportions and equipment made it convincing both on screen and during public appearances. The Munster Koach remains memorable because it balances humor, gothic styling, and genuine hot-rod craftsmanship within one highly recognizable television automobile.

7. Bill Carr’s 1955 Chevrolet Aztec

The Aztec was co-designed by George Barris and his roommate Bill Carr using a 1955 Chevrolet Bel Air convertible. Rather than applying a few cosmetic accessories, they substantially changed the car’s structure and exterior identity. Quad headlights altered the front appearance, while Studebaker Hawk tailfins reshaped the rear profile. The rear fenders were extended by 18 inches, giving the Chevrolet a much longer and more dramatic stance than the standard production model.

Distinctive Modifications Made to the Aztec:

  • Began as Chevrolet Bel Air
  • Added prominent quad headlight styling
  • Incorporated Studebaker-inspired rear tailfins
  • Extended rear fenders eighteen inches
  • Used handcrafted red Lucite taillights

Handcrafted red Lucite taillights added another distinctive element to the rear design. Their color and material complemented the exaggerated tailfins while demonstrating the detailed fabrication involved in the project. The body was finished in several tones inspired by desert colors associated with Aztec imagery. This layered paint treatment helped unify the many structural alterations and ensured the car remained visually engaging from every direction. Its design reflected the fearless experimentation that characterized custom-car culture during the period.

The Aztec was later equipped with a 350-cubic-inch Chevrolet small-block V8 connected to a 700R4 automatic transmission. This combination provided familiar, serviceable performance beneath an otherwise radical exterior. The car illustrates how Barris and Carr could take one of America’s most recognizable 1950s automobiles and rebuild its visual identity through proportion, lighting, color, and handcrafted details. Rather than erasing its Chevrolet origin completely, they exaggerated the era’s styling themes into something more theatrical and individually expressive.

8. The Emperor

Chuck Krikorian began the vehicle that became the Emperor by combining a 1929 Ford Model A roadster frame with 1931 Model A rails and a modified Cadillac 365 V8. Originally intended as a drag racer, the project changed direction when Krikorian was persuaded to develop it into a dedicated show car. He turned to Barris to complete the transformation, allowing the builder to refine its proportions and add the dramatic finishing work required for national competition.

Ambitious Qualities of Both Experimental Builds:

  • Combined modified early Ford components
  • Used powerful multi-engine mechanical configurations
  • Featured elaborate multilayer paint finishes
  • Pursued competition and speed records
  • Demonstrated Barris’s theatrical engineering ambition

Barris kept the body relatively sleek while adding a large custom grille, air-foam upholstery, and an elaborate 40-coat finish. The paint combined Kandy Burgundy, Swedish pearl essence, and crushed diamond dust, creating extraordinary depth under show lighting. The Emperor won America’s Most Beautiful Roadster in 1960 and appeared on the July 1960 cover of Hot Rod Magazine. Its success demonstrated how disciplined body design and remarkable surface finishing could be as powerful as excessive decoration.

SnakePit represented a far more extreme experiment. Built over four years for approximately $100,000, the 23-foot machine used six Cobra 351 V8 engines with a theoretical combined output of 2,000 horsepower. Barris envisioned a 300 mph land-speed attempt, although the car never achieved that potential. Plush leather seats and a snake-themed dashboard gave the enormous vehicle a finished interior. Even without fulfilling its speed objective, SnakePit became a memorable display of mechanical ambition and showmanship.

9. The Barrister

Barris and his team customized 1992 Ford Explorers into futuristic tour vehicles for the 1993 film Jurassic Park. Their yellow-and-green gradient paint, glass roofs, additional driving lights, and carefully weathered surfaces made the SUVs believable parts of the fictional dinosaur park. Simulated claw marks strengthened the impression that the Explorers had been operating in a dangerous environment. The designs successfully transformed ordinary family vehicles into instantly recognizable pieces of science-fiction cinema without making them appear unnecessarily futuristic.

Movie Features Supporting Visual Storytelling:

  • Transformed ordinary Ford Explorer SUVs

  • Added hidden rear driving controls
  • Created believable simulated vehicle damage
  • Extended Kargoyle’s entertainment appearances

A hidden rear-seat driving system allowed stunt performers to control the vehicles while remaining out of view during filming. This created the illusion that the Explorers were navigating the park autonomously. The solution required practical engineering because the vehicle still needed to move safely while the visible front seats remained unoccupied. Barris’s work on the Explorers showed that successful film vehicles depend on more than exterior appearance; they must also support the precise camera effects and physical actions required by production crews.

Kargoyle began with a 1967 Cadillac funeral coach and adopted a much darker form of custom styling. Built for the 1980 film Gargoyles, it featured a chopped roof, blown engine, lake-style exhaust, suicide doors, spiderweb steering wheel, purple metal-flake paint, and airbrushed graphics. It later appeared on Meat Loaf’s Bat Out of Hell album cover, several television programs, and Mötley Crüe’s final tour, extending its pop-culture life far beyond its original film role.

10. The Voxmobile

Barris built the Voxmobile in 1967 as a promotional vehicle for the Vox guitar company. Its body was shaped to reflect the outlines of Vox instruments, with enormous replica guitars integrated into the roadster’s appearance. The concept transformed a branded automobile into a moving celebration of rock music. Rather than placing company logos on a conventional car, Barris made the product itself part of the vehicle’s structure, ensuring that audiences immediately understood its connection with guitars and live performance.

Musical Features Built Into the Voxmobile:

  • Promoted the famous Vox guitar company
  • Used instrument-inspired custom bodywork
  • Included thirty-two integrated audio jacks
  • Carried powerful amplifiers and speakers
  • Functioned as moving concert stage

The Voxmobile also functioned as a mobile public-address and entertainment system. It included 32 audio jacks and a dual-manual Vox Continental organ mounted in the rear. Two 450-watt inverters converted power from the 12-volt battery to operate three Vox Beatle amplifiers, a Muntz stereo cartridge deck, and concealed speakers. These features required the vehicle to serve both as transportation and sound equipment, giving the promotional build a genuine function beyond its attention-grabbing exterior design.

A miniature stage at the rear allowed musicians to perform while the Voxmobile traveled slowly through parades and public events. This feature turned the car into a moving concert platform, joining automotive customization with live entertainment and commercial promotion. Barris passed away in 2015, but creations such as the Voxmobile preserve his willingness to treat vehicles as imaginative cultural objects. His legacy continues through builders and designers who see custom automobiles not simply as machines, but as expressive forms of modern art.
