During the Second World War, aerial warfare underwent enormous technological changes as military aviation rapidly evolved under the pressure of constant combat. Engineers pushed the boundaries of aircraft design, developing bombers with new configurations, more powerful engines, improved structures, and greater operational capabilities. Yet not every ambitious design succeeded. Several aircraft entered service with serious weaknesses involving aerodynamics, engine performance, structural stability, manoeuvrability, visibility, and mechanical reliability. In the harsh conditions of wartime operations, even relatively small engineering compromises could become major problems, leaving crews vulnerable and reducing an aircraft’s ability to perform its intended mission.
Examining these troubled bombers from an engineering perspective reveals the difficult challenges faced by military aviation during this period. Some designs were simply overtaken by rapid advances in aircraft technology, while others suffered from excessive drag, underpowered engines, poor handling, unreliable components, or manufacturing problems. The Tupolev TB-3, Blackburn Botha, Breda Ba.88 Lince, Douglas TBD Devastator, Fairey Battle, Brewster SB2A Buccaneer, Caproni Ca.135, and Avro Manchester each demonstrate a different way in which an aircraft could fall short of expectations. Their failures provide a fascinating look at the technical limitations and harsh realities of wartime aeronautical design.

1. Tupolev TB-3
When the Tupolev TB-3 first flew in December 1930, its cantilevered (no external supports) wing was seen as a great innovation that could be utilized in future bombers. The four-engined large aircraft was also fast and technically advanced for its time. Nevertheless, in 1941, the technical specifications of the TB-3 were considered somewhat low, as its maximum speed of 132 mph was not sufficient to withstand attacks from enemy fighters during daylight operations. During the war, the aircraft was gradually retired from combat and used as a transport and paratrooper carrier, as well as a trainer for bomber crews.
TB-3’s Major Weaknesses:
- First flew in 1930
- Four-engine heavy bomber
- Top speed 132 mph
- Vulnerable during daylight raids
- Retired completely in 1945
The aircraft was mostly used for night operations because of its insufficient speed, which forced it to rely on surprise attacks to penetrate enemy defenses. Nevertheless, in June 1941, a river crossing exercise resulted in the death of dozens of personnel, and the TB-3 was primarily used for transport duties since 1939. The four-engine bomber had an operational capacity of 8,752 pounds. It was also used as a fighter trainer, carrying trainers, passengers, and cargo. A total of 818 aircraft were built before it was formally retired in 1945.

2. Blackburn Botha
The Blackburn Botha was a naval reconnaissance and torpedo bomber, which entered service in late 1939. Its power-to-weight ratio was theoretically sufficient but was compromised by the aircraft’s aerodynamic drag, which significantly reduced its speed and performance. Moreover, the Botha had a set of design flaws, making it unsuitable for its intended mission. It could also not provide an adequate field of view for the crew, which complicated combat operations. Another issue was the general lack of directional stability, which became a significant liability in combat.
Botha’s Troubled Flight Characteristics:
- Entered service in 1939
- Excessive aerodynamic drag
- Poor crew visibility
- Weak lateral stability
- 580 aircraft produced
The combination of these factors decreased the probability of a successful attack and increased the likelihood of accidents during flights. The Blackburn Botha was incompatible with the demands of modern aerial warfare, and it was gradually replaced by the more reliable Avro Anson in 1939. Nevertheless, 580 aircraft of this model were built, as the Botha remained in service as a training aircraft until September 1944.

3. Breda Ba.88 Lince
The streamlined Breda Ba.88 Lince was a promising light bomber with excellent aerodynamics and retractable landing gear. It set two world speed records in 1935, and it looked like a serious contender in the race for the fastest aircraft in the world. Nevertheless, it was not meant for racing, and the modifications required to convert it into a ground-attack bomber added considerable weight, which significantly deteriorated its performance. The Lince became a cumbersome and underpowered aircraft with insufficient speed, which limited its utilization in combat.
The Lince’s Performance Collapse:
- Sleek low-drag design

- Sand filters reduced speed
- Used as airfield decoys
The addition of sand filters further decreased its performance, making it a less competitive fighter. The aircraft was primarily used in North Africa, but its maximum speed of 155 mph was barely enough to allow takeoff. Moreover, if an aircraft took off successfully, it had to deal with poor flight characteristics and extreme difficulty in maneuvering. The Lince was further challenged by an insufficient payload capacity and the inability to carry bombs and torpedoes. The removal of the defensive machine guns, crew, fuel, and bombs did not improve the situation, and the Lince was eventually used as a decoy aircraft in airfields.

4. Douglas TBD Devastator
The Douglas TBD Devastator was a carrier-based torpedo bomber, which was considered to be quite advanced when it entered service. Nevertheless, it proved to be too slow during attacks, as the TBD Devastator had to fly level and stable at approximately 115 mph to launch its torpedoes. As the TBD Devastator had limited defensive capabilities and poor maneuverability, it was not suited for dogfights and came under threat from numerous Japanese fighters. Besides, the TBD Devastator was plagued by mechanical defects, and its unreliable Mark 13 torpedoes were ineffective.
Why the Devastator Fell Behind:

- Only 130 produced
The TBD Devastator could carry up to two 1,200-pound bombs, but even with this powerful payload, the aircraft was not able to compete with enemy aircraft. Only 130 TBD Devastators were built, and the Douglas TBD Devastator was eventually retired from service after the Battle of Midway. While the TBD Devastator could be rather comfortable during flights, it was soon replaced by faster aircraft, as its shortcomings became too prominent for modern aerial combat.

5. Fairey Battle
The Fairey Battle had a dubious honor of being the first British aircraft to score a kill in WWII and the first British aircraft to be powered by the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine. However, it had a number of shortcomings that restricted its operations in favor of more capable rivals. The Fairey Battle was too slow and underpowered and could not withstand attacks from enemy fighters. Moreover, even though the aircraft was relatively light for a bomber, it could only carry a small number of bombs.
The Battle’s Combat Disadvantages:
- Merlin engine power insufficient
- Heavy three-man crew
- Limited bomb load
- Weak defensive armament
- Severe early losses
Its three-man crew and insufficient armaments made the Fairey Battle an underwhelming fighter-bomber. The Fairey Battle was the first British bomber to enter service in 1938, powered by Merlin engines. Its performance was adequate for the time, but it failed to meet the requirements when facing the Bf 109. In fact, in some operations in early 1940, more than 50% of the aircraft were lost, and there were also instances of 100% losses in a single mission. A total of 2,201 aircraft were built, but the Fairey Battle was withdrawn from active service by the end of 1940.

6. Brewster SB2A Buccaneer
The Brewster SB2A Buccaneer was a naval scout bomber, which was plagued by a number of design flaws, including weight issues and the complexity of its systems. It was supposed to be rather fast and powerful, but excessive weight made it slow, and unnecessary modifications made it unstable in flight. Moreover, the SB2A Buccaneer had poor climbing ability and was generally challenging to maneuver, which made it rather vulnerable in combat. The chronic production issues further complicated the aircraft’s utilization in combat.
Why the Buccaneer Failed:

The production process of the aircraft was riddled with issues, namely, the dysfunctional production line, low-quality parts, and assembly that did not meet requirements. The aircraft were often unreliable, which prompted the major military services to utilize the SB2A Buccaneer in training and other non-combat operations. The aircraft gradually disappeared from service as their crews did not have the required combat experience, and many aircraft were scrapped. The structural problems caused by the faulty assembly process rendered many aircraft unfit for service during tests.

7. Caproni Ca.135
The Caproni Ca.135 was a medium bomber with two Piaggio P.XI engines, but it had a significant deficit in terms of performance. The aircraft was underpowered, and its performance was severely limited at higher altitudes due to the insufficient power of its engines. The design of the Ca.135 was also unsuitable for combat, as it had a poor aerodynamic profile and a poor wing loading.
The Ca.135’s Operational Problems:
- Unreliable Piaggio engines
- Severe high-altitude power loss
- Poor aerodynamic efficiency
- Dangerous takeoff yaw
- Weak combat performance
The aircraft was generally sluggish in flight and difficult to handle, which decreased its combat worth. Moreover, the Piaggio P.XI engines had poor performance at higher altitudes, which further impaired the performance of the aircraft during takeoff and landing. The Ca.135 also had a rather dangerous takeoff characteristic, namely, a right yaw, which was exacerbated by structural issues of its landing gear. There were also issues with loose connections on many parts of the aircraft, such as oil and hydraulic lines. The Caproni Ca.135 was a mediocre bomber with mediocre performance, which was not worthy of combat operations. However, there were few alternative aircraft, and the Caproni Ca.135 was used during the early stages of the war. It was slow and underpowered, and it could not withstand attacks from enemy fighters. A total of 115 aircraft were built between 1936 and 1941, but it was soon phased out of service.

8. Avro Manchester
The Avro Manchester became infamous for its contribution to the tragic loss of aircrews due to the unreliability of its powerplants. Out of the 193 aircraft built, 123 were destroyed in various incidents, including accidents and attacks. Avro Manchester engines performed significantly worse than those of the contemporary bombers, and the crew of this aircraft was always at risk of experiencing multiple engine failures.
Manchester’s Critical Engine Problems:

The failure of one engine could lead to immediate difficulties in controlling the aircraft. The technical specifications of the Avro Manchester were also underwhelming, and the aircraft was generally unreliable. The insufficient performance of the engines greatly impacted the operational tempo, as they could not provide a sustainable increase in altitude. In the early months of 1942, only 31 aircraft were available for operations on average before the Avro Manchester was officially phased out of service. The aircraft was redesigned with Merlin engines, and this modification gave rise to the famous Avro Lancaster, which significantly improved the performance of the initial model.
