
Aerospace engineering has always been about extremes, and nowhere has that been clearer than when considering airborne giants. These titanic marvels of engineering have been able to move everything from space shuttles and enormous industrial machinery to more than 600 passengers over vast distances. Size is never one thing or simply a number, it is a combination of wing span, overall length, payload, and max take-off weight that shows just how impressively capable these marvels of manufacturing actually are.
Looking at these measurements also reveals how differently large aircraft have been designed for their individual missions. Some were created for military transportation, others for commercial passenger service, while several were developed as experimental platforms or specialized heavy-lift machines. In this exploration of aviation history, we examine ten of the largest aircraft ever constructed and the engineering decisions that allowed each one to operate at such an enormous scale.

1. Stratolaunch “Roc”
The Stratolaunch “Roc” has the world’s largest wingspan of all aircraft ever produced at a staggering 385 feet across the airfield. Its huge size is immediately clear from it twin fuselage design, giving the aircraft a very strange look compared to large aircraft more widely used commercially. How Big is the Airplane The aircraft measures 238 feet long and has a crewed cockpit to starboard and a non-pressurised shell to port. The drone requires a ton of thrust to propel the vessel through the air and is powered by six Pratt and Whitney turbofans with a maximum take-off weight of 1,300,000 pounds.

Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen envisioned the original “Roc” as a vehicle to deliver rockets to orbit, and the aircraft made its debut in 2017 and its first flight two years later. Cerberus Capital Management eventually bought the aircraft and turned it into a test platform for hypersonic vehicles, including its own Talon-A vehicle that would use the “Roc” as a testbed for aerospace development. With its payload capacity of 550,000 pounds, the “Roc” illustrates how such a massive aircraft can carry out highly specialized R&D tasks.

2. Hughes H-4 Hercules “Spruce Goose”
Constructed by Howard Hughes in the 1940s, the Hughes H-4 Hercules was intended to be a commercial, large-cargo flying boat capable of flying passengers across the Atlantic. One of the reasons for the craft’s more than impressive size was also the fact that it was built from steel and other technology (for the era) materials that were hard to come by in wartime, which is why it’s commonly referred to as the “Spruce Goose,” although the craft was reportedly not built of spruce. The H-4 had a span of 320 feet (97.5 meters) and a length of 218 feet (66.4 meters).

It was powered by eight Pratt & Whitney R-4360 Wasp radial engines, which combined to generate the thrust required to lift the weighty 400,000-pound aircraft from the water. The project carried a price tag of approximately $250 million, but the Hercules was never intended to be a working craft and only briefly saw the air once, in 1947, before being put into storage. However, it was demonstrated that it was possible to build and fly a huge aircraft made solely of wood, a major feather in the cap for experimental engineering at a time of strict wartime resource management.

3. Antonov An-225 Mriya
The Antonov An-225 Mriya, in the 1980s, was a Soviet-designed cargo plane meant to carry the Buran space shuttle mounted to its fuselage. Due to the aircraft’s size and structure, it became easily identifiable as one of the world’s largest-ever cargo aircraft. An-225 was powered by six Ukrainian-made ZMKB Progress D-18 turbofan engines and was equipped with a 32-wheel land gear load. The plane had a length of 84 meters (275.6 feet) and a wingspan of 88.4 meters (290.1 feet).

The Mriya broke 242 world records, such as a record maximum takeoff weight of 640 tonnes, and was capable of lifting 250 tonnes of internal cargo. The aircraft’s capacity for large industrial cargo made it a perfect aircraft for specialized worldwide charter flights. The only remaining An-225 was destroyed when Hostomel Airport near Kyiv was struck in 2022. It has been announced that the aircraft will be rebuilt, and it’s suggested that the cost would be in the region of $500 million.

4. Airbus A380-800
The first new model since 2007, the 75metre-long double decker Airbus A380-800 is the largest passenger airliner ever built and allows Airbus to provide two full-length passenger decks, giving tremendous interior space that is significantly more than that available on conventional single deck wide body aircraft. The aircraft measures nearly 80metres from wingtip to wingtip, and is powered by four rear fuselage mounted turbofan engines flying at Mach 0.85. Depending on the layout, the aircraft can carry between 525 and 853 passengers; the maximum number is based on an all-economy configuration.

Airlines like Emirates used the massive interior of the A380 to sell premium services like on-board lounges and private suites. With well over 300 million passengers having been carried on some 800,000 flights during its lifetime, the A380 was also one of the world’s most popular aircraft. But it was not to last: in 2021, Airbus announced it was ending A380 production amid a commercial market increasingly aligned with smaller twin-engine jets, and by 2022, the world’s largest passenger aircraft became something of an aviation monument, thanks to the giant, double-deck aircraft’s sheer size and ability to fly hundreds of passengers around the world.

5. Antonov An-124 Ruslan
History By the 1980s, NATO reported that the Antonov Design Bureau of the Ukrainian Soviet Socialist Republic (SSR) had developed the aircraft as a strategic airlift cargo aircraft, specially designed to haul extremely heavy and oversize freight. Although NATO responded to the aircraft with the codename “Condor,” the width of the Antonov 124 Ruslan’s center fuselage made it a major contributor to large cargo transportation. The Antonov 124 Ruslan, an all-military cargo aircraft, is the widest aircraft in active service and the second-heaviest cargo aircraft by gross weight. It has a wingspan of 240 feet and can carry payloads of 150 tonnes.

Loading the heaviest loads for the An-124 arrived in late 2010 when the aircraft set a Guinness record by airlifting a 135.2-ton Siemens electric generator from Germany to India. The An-124 can make the loading of heavy, complex industrial freight significantly simpler thanks to forward entry loading capabilities aided by a kneeling nose gear, a front cargo loading door for the enormous cargo compartment, and a cargo handling system to lift and load heavy items. It remains an important source of strategic heavy-lift capability for both commercial and military operators.

6. Convair B-36 Peacemaker
Convair B-36 “Peacemaker” The Convair B-36 “Peacemaker” was an American strategic bomber built by the Convair division of General Dynamics for the United States Air Force. The B-36 was the largest mass-produced piston-engined aircraft ever built and had the longest wingspan of any combat aircraft ever built, at 230 ft. It was also the largest combat aircraft ever built, with some variations measuring as long as 167 ft 7 in. It was used by the United States Air Force from 1949 to 1959.

The aircraft was designed to fly global missions without refueling, and had a maximum range of nearly 10,000 miles while hauling a payload of 87,200 pounds. It was also the first bomber in the U.S. inventory that could carry any nuclear weapon on its internal bomb bay and not require modifications to do so. The Air Force replaced the B-36 with the Boeing B-52 Stratofortress after beginning in 1955. In 384 B-36s built, four examples still exist in various museums in the United States, all serving as a reminder of just how large bombers used to be.

7. Convair XC-99
The Convair XC-99 was a prototype heavy cargo aircraft developed for the United States Air Force. Developed directly from the B-36 Peacemaker heavy bomber, the aircraft used the B-36’s huge wings and much of its structure, giving a single aircraft a wingspan of 230 ft (70 m). The aircraft represented an attempt to use the engineering and size of a strategic bomber to produce a heavy transport aircraft and was the largest land-based piston-engined transport aircraft ever built.

The huge aircraft flew for the first time on 24 November 1947, before being handed over to the Air Force on 26 May 1949. Also proposed was a civil counterpart to the XC-99, the so-called “Model 37”, but it was not built. Only one prototype of the XC-99 was ever constructed, making it one of the rarest aircraft in history and, after it was retired, it was later acquired by the National Museum of the United States Air Force at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, where it remains today, in decayed condition.

8. Lockheed C-5 Galaxy
The Lockheed C-5 Galaxy airplane was a mainstay of American military airlift capabilities following the craft’s debut flight in 1968. The big plane was designed to carry large, heavy payloads over long distances, providing the U.S. military with an aircraft that could move equipment that might be too big or heavy for a smaller aircraft to handle. Originally built by Lockheed and now maintained by Lockheed Martin, this enormous transport aircraft has a wingspan of 223 feet and a cargo bay that extends to a size of about 36 meters long. Its interior has enough space to lift 127 tonnes of military equipment, including tanks and helicopters.

The C-5 faced major technical issues and cost overruns and proved to be a financial challenge to Lockheed. Early models faced wing-cracking issues that limited flight until wing upgrades and repairs were completed. A modernization program was initiated to upgrade the fleet to the new C-5M Super Galaxy model, replacing aging and less efficient engines and updating avionics in the aircraft. The C-5 modernization program was envisioned to keep the aircraft flying well past 2040, as long as the demand for such a large transport remained high.

9. Douglas XB-19
The Douglas XB-19, was designed and built by the Douglas Aircraft Company during the early 1940s for the United States Army Air Forces. Its original designation was XBLR-2 (which stands for “Experimental Bomber, Long Range”). With an enormous wingspan of 212 feet, the size of the XB-19 was not surpassed until the arrival of the Convair B-36 in 1946, the first aircraft built specifically with long-range strategic bombing in mind.

One XB-19 prototype was built and flew in the air, but was mainly just a huge testbed for long-range strategic-bombing ideas. The world of aviation technology was changing fast, though, and the advent of modern aircraft had doomed the Xb-19’s experimental program to near-cancellation before it could establish itself in the field. The prototype airplane was ultimately scrapped, and today the airplane itself is long gone, but two of its gigantic landing-gear tires have been kept as aviation-museum exhibits, in testament to how vast the Xb-19 really was.

10. Antonov An-22
Designed by the Soviet Union’s Antonov Design Bureau and given the NATO reporting name “Cock,” the Antonov An-22 “Antei” holds an important position in the history of heavy cargo aviation. With a wingspan of 211 feet, the aircraft made history as the world’s first wide-body transport aircraft. It also remains the largest turboprop-powered aircraft in existence. Its propulsion system uses four turboprop engines equipped with contra-rotating propellers, giving the aircraft the power needed for heavy transport operations while maintaining its distinctive turboprop configuration.

The An-22, unveiled at the 1965 Paris Air Show, was noted at the time for its enormous size and outlandish turboprop layout. After the program, the An-22 was used to enable Soviet strategic troop movements and humanitarian aid deliveries – and for transporting personnel and equipment over long distances, a role it still plays in the Russian Aerospace Forces. These huge aircraft demonstrate how aerospace engineers have strained the limits of structure and propulsion in service of soldiers, scientists, and ultra-large payloads. The Stratolaunch Roc, Hughes H-4 Hercules, Antonov An-225, Airbus A380, An-124, B-36, XC-99, C-5 Galaxy, XB-19 and An-22 are all accomplishments of aerospace engineering audacity.
