Sure, the world of collecting classic cars offers a plethora of esteemed gatherings, but very few come close to the splendor and tradition associated with the Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. Situated at Italy’s pristine Lake Como, it has always been considered one of the most distinguished automotive fetes on the planet. For many years manufacturers have seen fit to bring their best and brightest here, and BMW has been among its most iconic participants.
Come 2025, BMW’s relationship with Villa d’Este will reach new heights as official auction partner Broad Arrow Auctions has announced a standalone BMW only auction featuring some of the most coveted vehicles to ever bear the German marque’s name. From cherished roadsters to celebrated supercars and racing heroes, the auction is set to exhibit almost seventy years of BMW motoring history on a single night. It’s no surprise that collectors, enthusiasts and historians are already eager to see the lot. Thus far announced vehicles include many of the most treasured models to wear the blue and white roundel, each with a rich story to tell.

1. 1958 BMW 507 Series II Roadster
Introduced in the 1950s, the 1958 BMW 507 Series II Roadster is regarded as one of the most stylish and sought-after vehicles BMW has ever manufactured. This BMW model helped re-establish BMW as a producer of high-class sports cars, and has since become associated with the very finest quality, exclusive design, hand craftsmanship. Its body styling and proportions still impress owners today. The BMW 507 is arguably the most coveted of all classic cars.
A Timeless BMW Icon:
- One of BMW’s most beautiful classic roadsters
- Extremely limited production model
- Rich documented ownership history
- Original Federweiss factory paint finish
- Highly desirable collector-grade example
The example slated for Villa d’Este has a rather extraordinary history; Chassis 70127 was originally registered in Germany and was a gift to the car’s first owner, Elisabeth Bartels Jr., from her father. Her tenure would span almost half a century, keeping the original BMW virtually untouched, as is befitting its place in the BMW archives. The car was cherished by its second owner for decades prior to his being able to purchase it and maintain it in the fashion he had long desired. Ownership is not just documented, it’s enviable, as well.
Finished in its original Federweiss, the roadster has had very few kilometers accumulate on its odometer throughout the years. It is so well preserved and correct throughout that it is truly one of the finest original examples remaining today. With only 252 of BMW’s now legendary 507 produced and with the car approaching the 70th birthday of its inception, collectors are sure to continue to bid strongly for this exceptional German masterpiece, as rarity and beauty, coupled with such unimpeachable provenance, will make this one of the most sought-after BMW’s of all time.

2. 1980 BMW M1 (Frank Farian Car)
As the first true supercar ever manufactured by the company the 1980 BMW M1 is a landmark car in the company’s history. It was designed with motorsports in mind but the M1 featured cutting edge engineering with exotic styling. Design by Giorgetto Giugiaro, the mid-engine sports car delivered remarkable performance, and its speed, balance, and scarcity quickly helped it to gain legendary status. Today the M1 is considered one of the most sought after classic BMW’s there has ever been.
Why This BMW M1 Is So Special:
- BMW’s first production supercar
- Designed by Giorgetto Giugiaro
- Mid-mounted inline-six engine
- Owned by music producer Frank Farian
- Unique Procar-inspired modifications
But the ultimate story about this car relates back to Frank Farian, the mega music producer for acts such as Boney M and Meat Loaf. Not only is this an incredibly rare and expensive car, but owning it once meant you owned a piece of music history. Back in the late 1980s, Farian used BMW M Division to give his car an ultra desirable Procar conversion. This means that the car received some very desirable upgrades to turn it into a truly individual M1.
A wider body, the signature huge rear wing, BBS rims and a styling upgrade for the interior all added to the character of this incredibly special car. It has since made regular appearances at highly regarded car shows and collector meets and coupled with its unique spec, supercar provenance and celebrity ownership, this particular BMW M1 is surely one of the most desirable ever produced.

3. 1981 BMW M1 (Vijay Mallya Car)
This 1981 BMW M1 exemplifies the value which ownership history can add to what is already an extremely desirable rare car. The very first proper BMW supercar, the M1 was always an exceedingly rare model, and remains a highly sought-after collector’s car all around the world. This example, by virtue of its incredible history and fully documented past, is all the more special and is truly one of the most exciting M1’s available, whose incredible and almost unheard of ownership story and worldwide provenance few cars can match.
What Makes This BMW M1 Unique:
- One of only eleven M1s delivered to the UAE
- Originally finished in orange paintwork
- Formerly owned by Vijay Mallya
- Extensive international ownership history
- Highly collectible BMW supercar
Delivered originally to the UAE this is one of only 11 built for this market. That alone would make it rare enough but its previous ownership record adds a whole new dimension. The M1 then found its way into the hands of Mr. Vijay Mallya, in whose ownership it remained for over 25 years. In this time the M1 has travelled the world and visited a surprising number of different countries giving it an ‘International’ history rarely seen on classic collector cars. This period of ownership adds to the car’s authenticity and desirability.
In 2016 the M1 was purchased by its present owner from Mallya and taken to its present country of residence, the Netherlands. Its provenance alone gives it a story unlikely to be seen with another classic collector car and coupled with the cars’ inherent value and history within the BMW story there really is much to commend the car. Collectors often pay well for interesting stories attached to cars and this example is no different, meaning it is highly likely to be keenly bid when it comes up for sale.

4. 1988 BMW M3 Cecotto
In the realm of automotive performance, it is hard to find anyone who does not agree that the E30-generation BMW M3 is the pinnacle of performance automobile engineering. Initially conceived as a homologation special for touring car racing, it soon became celebrated for its balanced handling and outstanding performance in motorsport events. One of the rarest E30 M3 versions is the Cecotto Edition. Since it was produced in very limited quantities and its fame can be traced back to the racetrack, it has become quite an exclusive collector’s item.
Why the M3 Cecotto Edition Is Special:
- Limited production of only 505 units
- Named after racing driver Johnny Cecotto
- Enhanced version of the S14 engine
- Exclusive styling and equipment upgrades
- Highly collectible E30 M3 variant
The Cecotto Edition was produced in tribute to the racing career of Johnny Cecotto, one of the leading drivers to represent BMW at the time. The standard M3 had already featured a particularly high-output S14 four-cylinder from BMW but it was upgraded, alongside a number of other performance enhancements that helped to refine the already sharp driving dynamics of the original E30 M3, turning what could easily have been another limited-edition cosmetic model into one of the most desirable M3 models ever.
Finished in Misano Red, one of the M3’s signature paint shades, the Cecotto Edition provides motorsport-bred performance within a usable road car format. It uses a variety of lightweight parts, a few individual styling changes and a number of subtle upgrades to enhance the road-driving experience. All the changes, along with its extreme rarity, combine with the fact that it is directly linked to BMW’s racing success to make it one of the most desirable cars from the M division ever produced. The E30 M3, with the Cecotto being arguably the ultimate form of it, has always been thought of as one of the most involving driving cars BMW has ever made.

5. 2001 BMW Z8
The BMW Z8 managed to bridge BMW past and present. The 507 Roadster inspired BMW’s own roadster to become more than just a tribute to the old roadster, by fusing old BMW styling with up-to-date mechanics and performance. A more modern take on the classic idea of the roadster which looks contemporary while respecting it origins. It was stylish, beautifully proportioned and immediately recognisable as something special and it’s one of BMWs most significant modern classics.
A Modern Interpretation of a Classic Icon:
- Inspired by the BMW 507 Roadster
- Designed by Henrik Fisker
- Powered by a 4.9-liter V8 engine
- Produces approximately 400 horsepower
- Highly collectible modern BMW
Designed by Henrik Fisker the Z8 possesses outrageous styling. Dramatic and in keeping with classic roadster forms it has a long bonnet, curvaceous body and delicate details which make it an instant classic. A normally-aspirated 4.9-litre V8 from the M5 of E39 series has been fitted underneath the aluminium bodywork. With an output in the region of 400hp this unit provides startling performance. Both aesthetic and mechanical beauty is characteristic of the roadster.
This example in Villa d’Este is still practically new having covered very few miles and is consequently in outstandingly well-preserved condition. Displayed here in the two-tone combination with titanium silver bodywork, this car represents perhaps the finest specification offered in the series. The excellent condition of the Z8, no doubt partly responsible for its enduring appeal, now places it among the most desired of early-2000s sports BMW’s.

6. BMW M3 CSL (E46)
There are many performance vehicles out there which have earned their place as the “best ever” for various manufacturers, and for BMW’s M Division, it doesn’t get any better than the M3 CSL. The ‘CSL’ name, meaning Coupe Sport Leichtbau, is normally only reserved for cars where driving performance was maximized for it and the E46 M3 based CSL did exactly that in the most concentrated package possible, stripping weight to make for the best handling, most responsive version of the already excellent machine.
The Ultimate E46 M3:
- CSL stands for Coupe Sport Leichtbau
- Extensive weight-reduction measures
- Carbon-fiber performance components
- Naturally aspirated inline-six engine
- Highly collectible limited-production model
Weight reduction and enhancement of every driving experience were the chief concerns for BMW’s engineers. Use of carbon-fiber for the body sections, use of thinner glass and elimination of unnecessary features led to a more lithe machine. These changes led to improvements in the areas of acceleration, braking and cornering. Every change was made with a performance related objective in mind and the end result was a car that was precise and exhilarating on road or track.
Arguably the most fondly remembered element of the CSL is the normally-aspirated inline six. Matched with its unique carbon-fiber airbox it creates an induction note, many would argue, is the greatest sound ever made by BMW. The motor’s sharp response and its ability to climb quickly toward its rev limit complement its light bodywork perfectly, and combined with its limited production, has secured its place in the eyes of enthusiasts and collectors alike. The E46 M3 CSL is seen today, as one of the purest driver’s BMWs ever.

7. BMW M3 Group A Rally Car (E30)
While most widely celebrated as a touring car icon, the BMW E30 M3 was also incredibly competent on the rally stage. Designed and engineered to Group A regulations, the chassis displayed itself as an adaptable and effective unit on all forms of the sport. This specific rallying interpretation of the legend brings to light a tougher and fiercer aspect of the M3, ready to dominate under harsh conditions and variable terrain; a testament to the ingenuity of BMW and their motorsport history.
Motorsport-Bred Rally Legend:
- Genuine Group A rally specification
- Extensive competition-focused modifications
- Lightweight and reinforced construction
- Specialized suspension and safety systems
- Strong connection to BMW racing history
When the Group A rally M3 was built, it underwent a host of modifications over and above its road car cousin; in order to cope with competition it underwent stripping to reduce weight which consequently improved the car’s agility while safety structures were reinforced making the vehicle and occupant more secure on the most punishing surfaces. Suspension was upgraded and bespoke parts used to allow the car to cope with any kind of rally surface. The engine was also remapped in order to provide the necessary power output required. As a result the M3 was turned into a powerful racing car.
This particular type of car really gives one a look at the past when road cars and racing cars were really so closely linked. The rules and regulations of Group A helped manufacturers to create the roads cars and rally cars that we see today. A well looked after E30 M3 was undoubtedly one of the great racing cars of its time. A true rally car such as this one is much harder to find than a normal road car.

8. The Yet-to-Be-Revealed Surprises

Potential BMW Icons Still to Come:

This would make an already amazing array of automobiles even better, but until they confirm it collectors can only guess.
