Beyond the Dogfights: 12 Legendary Fighter Aircraft of WWII

Deciding on the greatest fighter plane of World War II is much harder than simply ranking them by speed, armament, or the sheer quantity of aircraft produced. Each of the major nations entered the war with different military priorities, technological base, and ground conditions to deal with. Aircraft ranged from interceptors intended to intercept high flying bomber formations, to fighters for naval applications, for the rigors of dogfights at low altitudes and for attack on the ground. Aircraft evolved significantly throughout the war with engineers upgrading current designs to counter new threats. The ensuing struggle to gain superiority led to the creation of some of aviation’s most celebrated machines.

Of course, who is “best” has always been the source of discussion among aviation historians and military experts, because a fighter plane cannot be assessed by any statistic. A machine should always be judged according to its ability to use all characteristics simultaneously that is, speed, maneuverability, range of action, climbing speed, reliability, pilot safety, armament, maintainability, its ability to adapt to changing circumstances of combat and just as importantly, the ability of those pilots who operated them and their strategic use in battle. For some fighters were recognized by their combat achievements, for others the embodiment of resilience, ingenuity or technological perfection despite obvious inequality.

1. Hawker Hurricane

Although always overshadowed by the Spitfire, the Hawker Hurricane was an equally essential part of the Battle of Britain. Hurricanes shot down far more of the attacking German planes than their more glamorous counterparts in 1940, the standard fighter for the defence of Britain. The aircraft was a tough and straightforward machine, one that could be readily repaired to get fighters back to the front lines when all the airworthy aircraft needed to be fighting. It had the iconic Rolls-Royce Merlin engine, the first RAF fighter to go past 300mph. Fitted with eight 303-inch Brownings (later armed with 4.303s and two 20mm cannon), the Hurricane became the most important British fighter of the Second World War.

2. Mitsubishi A6M Zero

When it saw service early in the Pacific War, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero fundamentally shifted the balance of power in the skies. Its fantastic turning ability, incredible range and agility gave Allied pilots quite the shock in combat in most turning fights it had no equal among other modern fighter designs. AfterPearl Harbor and throughout the early campaigns of the Pacific War, the Mitsubishi A6M Zero was arguably the most dreaded carrier-borne fighter in the sky. With 20 mm cannons and 7.7 mm machine guns providing decent offensive punch, it relied on extreme light weight for the agility that so embarrassed the Allied fighter designs of its day.

However, the aircraft’s light weight also forced the Zero to make serious compromises. Due to a lack of pilot protection, the inability to carry self-sealing fuel tanks, and with the advent of tactics designed to defeat its limitations, the Zero became more exposed with each flight. Once a damaged Zero was captured and studied, Allied pilots began to avoid turn fighting and concentrated on their strengths, utilizing dives, speed and teamwork instead. Even though ultimately superseded by better aircraft, the Zero became an iconic element of the Imperial Japanese Naval Air Service over the course of the war.

3. Curtiss P-40 Warhawk

Among the first, most dependable, of the Allied fighters in the early years of WWII was the Curtiss P-40 Warhawk. Available as a Warhawk, Tomahawk, and Kittyhawk, it fought in North Africa, China, Burma, India, and the Pacific in large numbers. Though its agility and high-altitude performance were often hampered by the weak power plant, an Allison V-1710 engine, the P-40 did have one key attribute. It was tough and frequently returned from heavy combat, though in poor shape.

Why the P-40 Earned Respect:

Though eventually supplanted by more modern fighter aircraft, its toughness, flexibility, and reliable performance earned the P-40 its reputation as one of the great fighters of the early war years, a symbol of tenacity and the value of smart, organized combat.

4. Messerschmitt Bf 109

Germany’s workhorse in the skies during World War II, the Messerschmitt Bf 109 was an outstanding and important aircraft and remained a standard front line Luftwaffe fighter from its deployment in the Spanish Civil War through to Germany’s final surrender after the Second World War. Over 30,000 Bf 109’s were built and this excellent fighter contributed to German air superiority during the early part of the war, whilst also supporting their actions throughout Europe.

Strengths of the Bf 109:

  • Excellent speed and climb
  • Powerful nose-mounted weaponry
  • Backbone of Luftwaffe operations

The Bf 109 not only defined the concept of an interceptor aircraft for much of its lifespan, but it also served to define development by opposing countries in many respects. The victories attained by the Bf 109 gave impetus to the British development of the Spitfire, and later the American Spitfire developments such as the Mustang and Thunderbolt. Although the Bf 109 became a great deal harder to fly as its engines became ever more powerful, good pilots learned to use the airframe’s many excellent characteristics until the last. Coupled with its mass production, evolution and combat experience, it is certain that this airplane deserves to be ranked among the greatest fighters.

5. Supermarine Spitfire

The most iconic and famous aircraft ever produced by man was probably the Supermarine Spitfire. Famous for its unmistakable elliptical wings the plane was a real symbol of British resilience in the face of war. First flew pre-war the aircraft astounded pilots in the RAF for its handling, speed and its well balanced performance. Although the Hawker Hurricane carried the brunt of the fighting against the Germans in the Battle of Britain the Spitfire was particularly well suited to attacking the Luftwaffe’s top fighting aircraft and this is the aircraft people remember from this phase of the war.

The aircraft saw combat around Europe, the Mediterranean, North Africa and into the Pacific. The Spitfire recorded an early victory in the air when the first Allied aircraft to down a German Me 262 jet fighter was a Spitfire. The versatility of this incredible fighter ensures its place as one of the greatest fighter aircraft of all time.

6. Focke-Wulf Fw 190

The Focke-Wulf Fw 190 arrived in 1941 as Germany’s finest fighter aircraft took to the European skies. This superb fighter aircraft designed by Kurt Tank boasted incredible speed, lethal firepower, a durable airframe, and maneuverability all rolled into a devastating fighter that compelled the Allies to upgrade their fighters. Thanks to a reliable BMW 801 radial engine, the Fw 190 could offer outstanding acceleration, powerful low-and medium-level performance, and superb operational dependability in combat. It was an easy aircraft to fly that pilots relished, featuring a fast roll rate, agile controls, and formidable firepower which could include multiple machine guns and 20mm cannons.

7. Republic P-47 Thunderbolt

However, in terms of weight, performance, or overall presence the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt had almost no equal. The aircraft’s great weight for its class, combined with a great big engine in the front, and a remarkable ability to absorb punishment earned the aircraft the nickname “Jug”. Rather than build it around light, agile performance the American aircraft builders decided to focus the Thunderbolt on the requirements of high-altitude attack, durability, and heavy firepower.

8. Grumman F6F Hellcat

In the closing years of the war, the Grumman F6F Hellcat served as the U.S. Navy’s principal fighter from aircraft carriers. Entering service in 1943, the Hellcat proved to be exactly the fighter needed by American forces to not only outfight the Mitsubishi Zero, but to effectively safeguard American carriers against more demanding missions in the Pacific. While not an agile rival to the Zero, the Hellcat was fast, tough, and well-armed and reliable. With the sturdy Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp power plant, the fighter was both responsive and highly robust for battle. With 6.50 calibre Browning machine guns, stout armoured construction and self-sealing fuel tanks, American pilots survived better in the F6F than the aviators flying most enemy fighters.

It was used extensively as an escort, in fleet defense, close air support and ground attack duties as well. Due to its well-balanced design, reliable performance and effectiveness in combat, the Hellcat proved to be one of the best naval fighter aircraft of World War II. To this day, it continues to serve as a powerful symbol of American carrier aviation and the fighting capabilities of Allied aviation.

9. Yakovlev Yak-3

The Yakovlev Yak-3 was one of the finest fighter aircraft of the Soviet Union to fly towards the end of World War II. Developed to cope with the fierce air-war on the Eastern Front, the Yak-3 was designed around the principles of light weight, superb maneuverability, and excellent low altitude capability. Entering service in 1944 the Yak-3 quickly gained a reputation among pilots of both sides as an agile aircraft that could take on even German aces in an equal match for at close range. Its excellent performance was attributed to an exceptionally good power-to-weight ratio that gave the Yak-3 quick acceleration, good climb rates, and the turning ability needed to dance with the opposition.

The Soviet fighter, in fact, inspired such a healthy degree of awe amongst German pilots that they were explicitly instructed to try to limit low-altitude fighting with it wherever possible. The control agility and predictable behaviour of the Yak-3 provided a real edge during fiercely contested dogfights to the pilot on the other side. A testament to down to earth Soviet ingenuity, its relatively simple, robust construction and ease of maintenance enabled the Yak-3 to perform so successfully during the entire war truly a classic.

10. North American P-51 Mustang

The North American P-51 Mustang has been referred to by many as one of the top all-around fighters of World War II. The initial airframe designs were certainly impressive, but it wasn’t until the P-51 was outfitted with the Rolls-Royce Merlin engine that the Mustang emerged as perhaps the top fighter of the war. With such a superb engine mated to one of the best airframes of the war, the resulting aircraft offered tremendous performance for its time speed, high altitude performance, range, and amazing aerodynamic qualities. The Mustang is best remembered for its high-altitude long range bomber escort mission.

Reasons the Mustang Became Legendary:

Although Mustang became well-known as a bomber escort fighter, it was equally capable as an interceptor, fighter-bomber, reconnaissance aircraft and tactical support aircraft. It was agile for its size, was a good climber, and reliable under combat conditions, and was successful in a number of different roles during wartime operations, including bomber escort; it played a significant role in helping the Allies achieve air superiority in the air campaign over Europe. Today, it is a widely acknowledged icon of aviation.

11. Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik

While it wasn’t conceived as a fighter aircraft like some, the Ilyushin Il-2 Shturmovik’s impact on World War II aviation was substantial. Known to the Soviets as the “Flying Tank,” the ground-attack aircraft was constructed to withstand enemy fire while decimating enemy armored columns, artillery, supply columns and formations of infantry. It would quickly prove to be one of the Soviet’s strongest tools of war on the field. Perhaps its best innovation was the design and incorporation of heavily armored structure of the plane directly into the air frame of the plane, protecting the pilot, engine, fuel and other critical systems from most ground and air attacks.

With its load of cannons, machine guns, rockets and bombs, the Il-2 turned into one of the most intimidating machines of the Eastern Front. 12. Vought F4U Corsair

One of World War II’s deadliest warbirds, the Vought F4U Corsair had the looks and the ability to match-it was powered by the powerful 2,800 horsepower Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp engine which made for one fast warbird capable of carrying a substantial payload of armament. Even after overcoming initial aircraft carrier landing difficulties (due to the landing gear, it hovered rather than settled in, which can throw a carrier deck crew off), over time, modifications turned it into one of the top fighters the U.S. Navy and Marine Corps would fly throughout the war.
