Bentley begins a new chapter in its rich 102-year history with the worldwide unveiling of the all-electric Bentley Torcal in London. The all-new luxury SUV is the marque’s fourth standalone model line, joining the Bentley Continental GT, Flying Spur and Bentayga, and marks a fundamental change for a company that is renowned for its large-displacement combustion engine vehicles. The Bentley Torcal has been meticulously designed, engineered and hand-built by Bentley teams in Crewe, England.

The Torcal also comes as part of an “electric offensive” that Bentley has been pursuing for nearly a decade. In 2017, the brand explored the possibility of a smaller EV crossover, and in 2024, it announced plans for its first production EV to be a compact, attractive urban SUV. Those plans have evolved thanks to shifts in the high-end EV market, prompting Bentley to shift to its updated Beyond100+ strategy, which pushes its 100-percent-electric goal back from 2030 to 2035 to allow time to thoroughly test and prepare the company’s HV components and supply network. But indications from the media and potential buyers who have seen the Torcal in recent private previews have been very enthusiastic ahead of its launch, Bentley says.

The name alone ties the new SUV to the natural geography and to mechanical engineering. The inspiration for The Torcal comes from El Torcal de Antequera, a limestone rock formation in Andalusia, Spain that bears UNESCO World Heritage status and a rocky landscape shaped over hundreds of millions of years. The name itself originated from the Latin word for “to twist,” from which the word torque derives, an allusion to the immediate rotational force of electric propulsion and a departure from Bentley’s trademarking of geographic identifiers in the past, like Bentayga or Bacalar.

1. A New Design Direction for Bentley

The result is a new visual language for Bentley crafted under the guidance of Design Director Robin Page. The design was conceived through a process of four distinct visual ‘reads’ to inform people’s intuitive response to the vehicle. Starting with proportion, the SUV is built with a long wheelbase, high beltline and a powerful presence at the front. Its upright stance and long bonnet preserve the traditional Bentley aesthetic, while enabling the Torcal to assume a broader and more restrained overall profile. The Torcal is the first vehicle to wear the brand’s reimagined brand badge which was first introduced in 2025.

Meanwhile, the top speed of the electric SUV is 155 mph (250 km/h). If the specifications are anything to go by, the car is definitely a high-performance luxury SUV that can be expected to feel very smooth in the electric powertrain. The Torcal S ups the ante on the claim of output. 888 PS (876 hp) of output for its electric motors, and up to 1,350 Nm of torque (996 lb-ft), with Launch Control. It takes just 2.8 seconds to speed from 0-60 mph, and 2.9 seconds 0-100 km/h, and its maximum speed is increased to 162 mph (260 km/h). That’s despite the fact that Bentley intentionally didn’t want to chase high acceleration figures just for the sake of it.

3. Performance Tuned for Comfort and Control

Bentley intentionally designed the Torcal to be a blend of high performance and luxury comfort. By the time the car was being developed, engineers had scaled back the vehicle’s acceleration, even with such impressive torque from the electric motors. According to one source, Bentley’s previous plans for the car, announced before the current CEO, Adrian Hallmark, took over, were for an electric vehicle delivering as much as 1,400 horsepower and capable of accelerating to 60 mph in as little as 1.5 seconds. But Bentley’s engineers felt such high levels of acceleration might be physically uncomfortable for many of the company’s traditional clientele.

The chassis technology of the Torcal strengthens the same philosophy. For the first time in its history, Bentley adopts fully active suspension on the car, consisting of high-speed actuators on each wheel that can lift or lower every corner independently to adapt to the road. There are no traditional mechanical anti-roll bars: they are replaced by reactive dampers that create continuously variable anti-roll torque, working alongside adaptive two-valve dampers, for a refined “magic carpet” experience without sacrificing chassis control in fast corners.

4. Battery Technology and 375-Mile Range

The drive for the Torcal is an 800-volt high-voltage pack made up of 192 lithium-ion pouch cells in series. The battery provides 113 kWh of usable energy and is covered under a factory warranty of 10 years or 100,000 miles. According to Europe’s WLTP testing procedure, the SUV will have a range of up to 375 miles, or around 600 km, on a single charge. An official EPA range rating for North America has yet to be announced, meaning the final U.S. range may vary. In the case of Bentley, the large battery, WLTP range and high charging power are designed to make electric driving viable while still fulfilling the brand’s long-distance touring capability.

Bentley claims the battery will go from 10 to 80 percent charge in just under 16 minutes, although it could take up to 20 minutes to make that jump if conditions are sub-optimal. This would allow the presence of 100 miles or 160 km of range in as little as seven minutes. The way the battery and charge system is configured is similar to that of the upcoming Porsche Cayenne Electric, the other Volkswagen Group model on the 800-volt platform.

5. Steering, Braking, and Urban Maneuverability

The Torcal also features electronic All Wheel Steering as standard. This is an essential safety feature in a premium SUV, who’s spacious interior is well suited to city driving as much as it is to open road driving. The rear wheels turn in the opposite direction of the front wheels by five degrees, enabling the Torcal to make sharp turns with an 11.1 meters radius. This system is especially advantageous when driving through narrow roads or parking. Bentley isn’t looking to just make a fast ‘ute, but to add seamless athletic ability to the mix.

Available Carbon Silicon Carbide ceramic brakes offer greater thermal capacity, and are lighter in terms of unsprung mass, which means they include 440 mm front discs, which are said to be equal to the biggest brakes in the world. With the likes of all-wheel steering, active suspension, strong brakes and a dual-motor powertrain, the Torcal has a wide dynamic range. It can be cool and relaxed for those moments where it doesn’t have to do anything exciting, but still has the machinery to be stimulated when needed.

How the cabin feels Comfort is high on the Torcal’s list of priorities. Standard front seats feature 16-way adjustment, along with heating, ventilation, adjustable bolsters, and massage. With no combustion engine, the Torcal’s acoustic character was a different challenge. Rather than the artificially generated sound of an electric motor, the sound engineers developed a soundscape known as Bentley Dynamic Symphony. Six professional musicians captured the sound of drums, viola and bass guitar for a more authentic sound experience, derived from the mechanical sound of Bentley’s iconic 6.75-liter V8 engine. A Frosted Diamond switchable-glass sunroof allows third-row passengers to electronically raise or lower the amount of light streaming into the cabin.
