
The world car industry appears to have identified defence business. Jaguar Land Rover and General Motors are expected to do battle for an estimated £900m Ministry of defence contract that will lead to British armed forces being supplied with thousands of new 4×4 vehicles. This order with the UK Ministry of defence is for some 3,000 vehicles with the long-term aim to increase, with around 7,800 Land Rover and Austria built Pinzgauer being retired from the front line when operating under the British Army, Navy and RAF umbrella.

The need for these platforms, and thus the reduced size of the Army, stems from a drive by the armed forces to streamline procurement, repair facilities, and logistical support across the globe.

3. Jaguar Land Rover Seeks a Return to Military Supply
The competition offers Jaguar Land Rover the chance to return to a sector in which it enjoys a prestigious pedigree, especially in its military incarnation. Indeed, the original Land Rover Defender was so successful a military vehicle it grew into an almost as iconic symbol of military transport used extensively by the British armed forces in operations from the Falklands War through to numerous deployments elsewhere in recent decades.

The problem for JLR is that the model, also known as the Defender, isn’t manufactured in Britain. It is built at a Slovakian plant, and a concern will be just how much British industry this proposal provides. Given that the government is so focused on the future of the British manufacturing base, the scheme will probably be put to careful scrutiny.

4. General Motors Builds a Transatlantic Defence Partnership
However GM is approaching the battle using its brand of association rather than manufacturing their cars in house in the UK. Because the company don’t manufacture any vehicles on British soil, the company have allied itself to BAE Systems and Coventry manufacturer NP Aerospace, a company that supports the current fleet in their military Land Rovers.

And the venture was hailed by GM’s UK defence sales boss as a chance for Britain to once again co-operate on a large industrial scale with the Americans-just as we had done during the Second World War, when GM made its trucks and cars available to the Allies. He explained this as being part of the process for bringing back the traditional friendship which existed between British and American industry.

5. Ineos Brings the Grenadier Into the Competition
A strong competitor is the industrial group owned by Sir Jim Ratcliffe, that it is on tender with its defence division partner SMT and offers the Ineos Grenadier which is presented as an update based on Land Rover formulas of yesteryear.

And the competition for the £900 million programme is, not surprisingly given the stakes, a strong one; in addition to Jaguar Land Rover, GM and Ineos, many major defence firms, as well as vehicle manufacturers, are proposing rival designs.

While the vehicle ability will be important to the ultimate decision there is expected to be significant influence of industrial advantage on the ultimate choices made, with there being a clear signal from the UK government that there must be substantial content in any choice concerning both UK companies and UK workforce in terms of providing those future military vehicles.
