America’s Last Straight-8 Cars: The Engines That Disappeared When the Auto Industry Changed Course

Long before the V8 became the icon of the American hot rod, the straight-eight engine embodied a paradigm of smoothness and sublime effortless power. With its long inline design, the straight-eight provided exceptionally even power output and whisper-quiet operation, which proved ideal for premium luxury cars throughout the 30’s and 40’s and the early 50’s. Low torque and zero vibration were just two of the aspects that make travel at highway speed so elegant, since a major part of why it sold during those decades was due to the level of its refinement.

Serious problems ultimately arose as changes within American car design appeared after the war, making the long straight-8 not practical for its length under relatively small and streamlining hood requirements. It proved too heavy for effective designs considering the length of the crankshaft to be an impediment on designing more compact yet performance vehicles. Overhead-valve V-8 engines provided manufacturers a blend that was much more economical power and packaging wise, with more current engine performance, thus causing most domestic manufacturers to cease designing them. In response, Pontiac replaced the straght-8 with their own 1955 V-8 named the Strato-Streak, effectively writing the definitive end to the straight-8 at Pontiac. For this reason, the 1954 Chieftain can be seen as the last production incarnation of a power plant that was nearly synonymous with Pontiac. Its historical significance lays not so much in itself as it in comparing its traditional ease of driving to the direction the company would eventually head. In the Chieftain, it was proven that the strait-8 still offered a enjoyable, comfortable ride to a market that was already firmly entranced by the idea of V-8.

3. Packard Patrician (1954)

Perhaps 1954 Packard Patrician best represented the sunset for straight-8 designs from this respected independent luxury builder. A Packard’s (359ci) inline-eight, the long-hooded Patrician incorporated an aluminum cylinder head, had nine main bearings, and could, depending on it’s tuning, muster well over 200hp to around 212hp in some forms. Despite this, market demands continued to shift and by now the straight-8 became increasingly harder to justify. Compact, overhead valve V8’s provided not only packaging convenience, but also more potential for power, and a more contemporary mechanical image. Packard killed the straight-eight after 1954, and developed an overhead-valve V8 instead, and so, Patrician was to a significant extent a fond goodbye from the Packard inline eight era. 4. Hudson Hornet (1954)

6. Nash Ambassador (1949)

The 1949 Nash Ambassador was what some would classify as the latter generation of theAmerican automobilie to base themselves upon the straight-8 concept, while the rest of the automobile industry readied itself for a significant mechanical revolution. The 260-cubic-inch Straight-8 of the Ambassador was intended for peaceful, smooth highway operation and was by no means a spectacular powerhouse. It was conceived with the notion that an ideal luxury car should be about comfortable traveling; its straight-8 simply helped to mold this by offering such smooth, yet inobtrusive power and little vibration, traits highly prized by many buyers with a strong bias toward comfort rather than sheer acceleration.

The 1949 Studebaker Commander represented another American manufacturer’s late use of a traditional straight-8 before transitioning to a more modern engine strategy.
