The number one thing everyone thinks about when shopping for an electric bike is: range. How far will an e-bike go on a charge? Range is going to tell you a lot; will it get you through your workday, the whole Saturday afternoon on a trail, carry the kids to the grocery store, or power you on a long vacation? Battery size, motor efficiency, terrain, rider, riding style and how much the rider relies on electric assistance all factor into how far an e-bike can ride.

A higher capacity battery usually allows for greater flexibility as the rider can cover more ground without the constant need to stop and recharge. Conversely, the addition of higher capacity batteries inevitably increases weight and can increase the initial price of the bike. For a longer distance electric bicycle purchase, a balance between the factors of range, performance, comfort and practicality are required.

Manufacturer’s range estimate and real-world range may vary depending on your terrain-nobody ever has an easy ride! Steep climbs, cold temps, heavy cargo loads, torquing on the accelerator, and running higher assist levels can eat up your range quicker than a teenager ate your Thanksgiving pie. With that in mind, here’s our selection of top long-range electric bikes that cover the range spectrum from heavy haulers to terrain tamers to urban cruising machines.
