Although this might seem like the latest trend, the basics of electric mobility have been laid out over 100 years ago. Even without advanced batteries, digital displays, and high-speed charging stations, that’s when visionary engineers and inventors began to investigate the possibilities of electricity for a viable means of transport.

Reflecting on the first electric cars, one can appreciate the ingenuity, perseverance and technological vision of those early pioneers. These were the machines that proved that electric propulsion could be more than just an experiment and a viable alternative to steam and gasoline-powered vehicles in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The conversations that occurred more than 100 years ago continue today when it comes to modern electric cars, such as driving range, charging convenience, battery performance and operating costs. 3. William Morrison’s 6-Passenger Wagon

Development of EVs in the United States was imported by William Morrison, an Iowa chemist who introduced the electric wagon with six seats in 1890. His car was one of the first successful electric cars in the U.S. and garnered a lot of attention for proving that electric power could be used in larger passenger cars.

5. P1 by Ferdinand Porsche

Although Ferdinand Porsche is known for revolutionizing automotive engineering, his first major success was in the field of electric cars, not sports cars fueled by gasoline. He pioneered the use of battery-powered transportation with an electric vehicle, the P1, in 1898 that showcased his superior engineering skill.

6. The First Hybrid Car

Ferdinand Porsche continued to be interested in electric propulsion beyond the P1. He noted that when he began to create electric vehicles he realized that they had short battery life and this limited the driving range, making longer trips impractical. Instead of giving up on electric technology he looked for a practical application that made use of the best features of several power sources.

7. Baker Electric

Electric vehicles were popular vehicles in the early decades of the 20th century, and few were as successful as the Baker Electric. Manufactured by the Baker Motor Vehicle Company, these were beautiful cars that represented comfort, elegance, and modern city transportation.

The Baker Electric was also good by the standards of its time. Some records show many models were capable of impressive ranges on a single charge, adequate to make them viable for urban driving. This popularity proved that EVs, long before the advent of modern batteries, were already viable vehicles for transportation.

8. Ford Model T

Early EVs became very successful and soon found strong competition from gasoline-based cars. One of the most important events came in 1908 when Henry Ford introduced the Ford Model T, which revolutionized the automobile industry by using assembly-line production methods to cut manufacturing costs and make cars affordable to millions of households.

Meanwhile, there were no widespread opportunities for convenient charging, and reliable electrical infrastructure was still localized to cities. The combination of declining vehicle costs, affordable fuel, and growing road access changed consumers’ attitudes toward EV use for the worse and launched a long-term trend of declining EV sales.

9. The Electric Starter

While the price of gasoline was an important factor in the success of the gasoline-powered vehicle, another technological innovation greatly shifted the competitive landscape. In 1912, Charles Kettering invented the electric starter, which replaced the manual cranking method used to start a car.

Incorporation of the electric starter, low-cost production and growing fuel network helped electric vehicles make way. Electric vehicles were phased out of the mainstream markets as gasoline-powered vehicles became more affordable and convenient to own, operate, and repair. By the middle 1930s, they were nearly extinct and still their place was taken by the gasoline engine in the car industry for decades.

10. Henney Kilowatt

Electric vehicles went largely out of the public eye for many years, but the interest in battery-powered transportation did not die out. The first revival of the idea was in 1959 when the Henney Kilowatt was introduced. It was created with the idea of a small commuter car and was an ambitious attempt at bringing electric mobility back when huge gas-powered cars reigned supreme.

This enabled a continued effort to develop EVs during a difficult time and helped maintain a great deal of engineering expertise and experience in their development, inspiring future innovations that culminated in the amazing growth of the modern electric vehicle industry.
