As BMW announces the arrival of the fifth-generation X5, the popular luxury SUV family grows to five different powertrain options based on a refreshed version of its V and iX architecture. It includes a staple mix of traditional internal combustion power plants petrol and diesel, and plug-in hybrid, a new all-electric flagship, and an as-yet-undefined range-extended addition, exemplifying BMW’s approach to offering multiple propulsion options in a familiar body. Ready to be built at Plant Spartanburg, the latest X5 arrives with a fresh set of technical hardware and a second-generation chassis platform, a new battery system, and a highly digital-first interior.

The new X5 still remains one of BMW’s core Sports Activity Vehicles, but takes a much wider technical approach. The iX5 60 xDrive is the technical flagship with twin electric motors and a substantial 144 kWh battery, with the new range-extender offering an additional alternative in those markets where charging stations are still sparse. In addition to these electrified models, BMW will be rolling out highly performance-oriented hybrid and V8 versions in the future, with the new X5 offering something for every kind of user without giving up its place as a powerful luxury SUV.

1. US Pricing and Model Lineup Strategy

Lining up at the front of the queue for the fifth-generation X5 is the rear-wheel-drive X5 40, priced from $69,800 excluding on-road costs, and will arrive in showrooms from February 2027. Those looking to pick up the first available model will be driven by the all-wheel-drive X5 40 xDrive, arriving this October from $73,550 (including the $1,450 destination and delivery charge). Both of these inaugural models comprise the traditionally-powered end of the new X5 line-up, ahead of the electrified variants.

X5 Pricing and Launch Strategy:

  • X5 40 starts at $69,800
  • X5 40 xDrive launches first
  • xDrive price reaches $73,550
  • 50e arrives in early 2027
  • iX5 60 xDrive costs $81,250

Electrification will be offered in early 2027, beginning with the 50e xDrive plug-in hybrid that will retail from $78,950 and the electric iX5 60 xDrive (the top of the spectrum) which will fetch a hefty $81,250 as the base price. Both of these suggestions carry a small premium over the current models, but ensure that the overall line-up remains below six figures with the most fundamental X5. BMW is thus upholding this range of almost sport-utility with powertrain choices between internal combustion engines, hybrid and electric.

2. The Twin Motor iX5 60 xDrive Electric Powertrain

The iX5 60 xDrive is the technological spearhead of the brand’s first fifth-generation X5 model series. The electric motors on the front and rear axles produce 400 kW/544 hp and 860 Nm/632 lb-ft ensuring significant acceleration and high straight-line performance. BMW claims that the electric X5 will accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 4.4 seconds. The top speed is electronically limited to 209 km/h (130 mph). The company considers the iX5 a typical vehicle in the sporty segment of electric luxury SUVs.

Twin-Motor iX5 Performance:

  • 578 horsepower combined
  • 593 pound-feet torque
  • 4.4-second 0–60 mph
  • 130 mph limited top speed
  • Twin electric motor system

BMW has designed the electric powertrain with this in mind. As such, the electric motor in the front is an asynchronous one that delivers 245 horsepower but can turn off entirely when the powertrain is under light load. This avoids wasting fuel and creating extra drivetrain resistance when no front-axle support is needed. The motor in the rear is an electronically excited synchronous type that also makes 325 horsepower for motorway cruising.

3. Sixth-Generation Battery Architecture and Fast Charging

The heart of the iX5’s electrical system is a 144 kWh (usable net) battery pack built from BMW’s sixth-generation cylindrical cell technology. The 120-millimeter-tall new cylindrical cells feature a 20 percent increase in energy density over BMW’s previous prismatic cell. BMW packs the cylindrical cells into a cell-to-pack structure, which is managed by a centrally located Energy Master unit. This layout enables the large battery capacity and high-speed charging system of the iX5.

iX5 Battery and Charging System:

  • 144 kWh usable battery
  • Sixth-generation cylindrical cells
  • 20 percent higher density
  • 800-volt electrical architecture
  • Up to 460 kW charging

The 800 volt electrical architecture enables the iX5 to accommodate DC fast-charging power of up to 460 kW. BMW believes that charging at 10 to 80 percent can take about 22 to 23 minutes. The iX5 is equipped with a standard NACS charging port and bidirectional power-flow capabilities. When conditions are ideal for fast charging, this SUV can be replenished by the equivalent of roughly 170 miles of range in just ten minutes. The combination of battery architecture and charging system is intended to shorten the wait times typically associated with large electric SUVs.

4. Range-Extender Drivetrain Revival with ZF Partnership

BMW, which discontinued range extender cars in 2017, is resurrecting the technology with ZF, its component supplier. The new system is targeted particularly at regions where public charging infrastructure is still being developed. The system-which is built around ZF’s eRE and modular units-involves a small petrol engine that is used solely as an on-board generator. Instead of driving the wheels directly, the engine is used to provide a constant charge to the battery while the electric drive still powers the car.

BMW Range-Extender System:

  • Developed with ZF
  • Compact petrol generator
  • No mechanical wheel connection
  • Maintains battery charge
  • Targets developing charging markets

Without a mechanical link between the combustion engine and drive wheels, this system isn’t like a conventional hybrid concept. With BMW’s variant, the flow of energy is similar to the concept tested during the experimental iX5 Hydrogen program. The petrol engine can run seamlessly inside a narrow range of optimal work, while also providing energy to the electric system. BMW says it’s aiming for total ranges of more than 600 miles with this concept, for drivers seeking electric propulsion but less reliance on charging stations.

5. Exterior Styling Updates and Neue Klasse Influences

The new X5 has exterior styling that is influenced by BMW’s new class of Neue Klasse concept cars. The taller front end features an illuminated Iconic Glow kidney grille that makes this SUV stand out in the darkness. The new X5 also features double-X-shaped daytime running lights that can be illuminated in white, or the light can be changed to yellow. The latter pays homage to BMW’s M motorsport past, while also creating a unique light signature for the vehicle.

New X5 Exterior Highlights:

  • Neue Klasse design influence
  • Illuminated Iconic Glow grille
  • Double-X daytime lights
  • Capacitive B-pillar winglets
  • Full-width rear taillights

Other exterior elements of the new design include the addition of aerodynamic touches. Capacitive winglet buttons located on the B-pillars now serve as the replacement for door handles on the outside of the vehicle. The full-width taillights now run across the entire back of the vehicle, giving the impression that the vehicle is wider than it actually is. BMW has also decided to do away with the signature split tailgate that’s been a feature of the SUV since 1999, replacing it with a single, solid piece.

6. Next-Gen Digital Interior and iDrive X Control Concept

In the interior, BMW has seriously changed the game, installing a new BMW iDrive X and Operating System X. That big 17.9-inch display that dominates the center of the cabin is still there, allowing passengers access to many controls, but BMW has dropped all tactile buttons in favor of a clear, digital environment. In their place, BMW has added a rotary iDrive controller for navigation, and a variety of controls and switches are located around the steering wheel, center console, and doors. It looks pretty sharp inside, with the new system giving the cabin a more clutter-free feel.

New X5 Interior Technology:

  • 17.9-inch central touchscreen
  • iDrive X interface
  • Operating System X
  • BMW Panoramic Vision
  • Optional passenger display

BMW Panoramic Vision displays vital information spanning the entire width of the lower windscreen, presenting essential information within the driver’s line of sight. This slate-like panel positioned at the lower end of the centre console preserves a volume control knob and some key physical buttons. Buyers can opt for a 14.6-inch passenger display carried over from the 7 Series. The other big change is the discontinuation of the third-row seating option, which makes the new X5 an all-new two-row luxury Sports Activity Vehicle worldwide.

7. The Upcoming X5 M60e Performance Plug-in Hybrid

Creating a plug-in hybrid performance model, the car maker has BMW M60e, which will slot between the xDrive50e PHEV and full-blown M performance models. The M Performance version will pair a slightly modified B58 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six unit with a transmission-mounted electric motor to create a hybrid that mixes combustion and instant electric torque to create an engaging driver experience, while also enjoying the range and variability of a plug-in hybrid.

M60e Performance Hardware:

  • Tuned B58 inline-six
  • 3.0-liter turbocharged engine
  • Transmission-integrated electric motor
  • Over 550 horsepower expected
  • 600 pound-feet torque expected

BMW anticipates that overall, the M60e will produce more than 550hp and 600lb-ft, rivaling established plug-in hybrid competition such as the Porsche Cayenne S E-Hybrid. BMW’s fifth-generation drive provides the electric torque in the middle of the acceleration pedal pressure before the turbocharged six-cylinder engine comes to the party. BMW also announced that a V8-powered M Performance model will arrive in 2027, while the M60e gets an aggressive M Sport body kit, multi-piston brakes, quadruple exhaust tips, and an adaptive M suspension.

9. Refined CLAR Platform and Optimized Chassis Dynamics

Instead of transitioning completely to the new clean-sheet Neue Klasse architecture, BMW will be building the fifth-generation X5 on a further developed version of its Cluster Architecture, or CLAR. The advantage for BMW is that one production footprint will serve five different powertrain types: gasoline, diesel, plug-in hybrid, pure-electric, and range-extender propulsion. Keeping a common platform across powertrains gives BMW flexibility while the X5 retains its traditional proportions and versatility.

X5 Platform and Chassis Features:

  • Evolved CLAR architecture
  • Five powertrain configurations
  • Revised adaptive suspension
  • Rear-axle steering available
  • Up to 3.2-degree steering

Chassis tuning has been optimized for ride comfort and handling agility. Changes to adaptive suspension geometry combined with revised characteristics of the springs and dampers, and optional rear-axle steering, allowing the rear wheels to be turned by 3.2°. All-electric X5 models retain the familiar proportions of the internal combustion versions and offer between 23.3 and 65.3 cubic feet of cargo space. Despite its twin-motor iX5 60 drive weighing in at 6,393 pounds, its battery mounted low in the vehicle and standard two-axle air suspension are designed to ensure a crisp, confident drive.

10. Spartanburg Production Hub and Sustainable Battery Assembly

BMW Group’s fifth-generation X5 family continues to be produced at BMW Plant Spartanburg in South Carolina, where the line has been the global home of the company’s Sports Activity Vehicle family since 1999. The iX5 60 xDrive is a significant production milestone for the model family as well it will be the first battery-electric vehicle to be produced at BMW Plant Spartanburg. That makes the plant’s responsibilities extend beyond the production of traditional BMW SUVs into the company’s burgeoning electric-vehicle manufacturing plans.

Spartanburg Production Highlights:

  • Production remains in South Carolina
  • Spartanburg opened SAV production
  • iX5 becomes first EV
  • Battery assembly moves locally
  • Woodruff plant supports Gen6 cells

Production of the high-voltage batteries takes place close by, at a new plant in Woodruff, South Carolina. The factory is planned to be equipped to deliver BMW’s sixth-generation cylindrical batteries and will not run on fossil fuel during the production. The plant’s global production will start with gasoline and diesel variants in August 2023, followed by plug-in hybrid and electric versions in late 2026. The decision to combine all three powertrain options within a single Spartanburg-based production network creates a flexible and adaptable production system for international market demands.
