A few blocks south of Subaru-ch sits the Yajima plant, another critical production engine at the heart of Subaru’s Japanese production system. More than 3000 employees operate at the factory floor producing some of Subaru’s best known bread and butter models. It is there where the Subaru Forester, Legacy, and Outback are produced, in addition to being home to additional production runs for the Impreza and XV. The plant’s production output is very significant from a production output standpoint for Subaru given the global popularity for both models targeted at the typical driver or family, driven largely by their practical adventurousness which is part and parcel of Subaru.

Yajima is complementary in its role to Subaru-ch, a plant focused more on a varied selection of models including sports and performance. This Japanese manufacturing plant is largely driven by more family oriented and outdoor recreational cars like the Forester, Legacy, and Outback; also, a lot of the production of these two factories gives them close ties into this line up. The close location further adds to their ability to focus their production on these cars and adds an additional layer to Subaru’s dense and concentrated manufacturing space.

3. Oizumi Builds the Boxer Engines and Transmissions

The manufacturing network that encircles the Subaru factories would not be able to perform without assistance from the adjacent Oizumi factory. What sets the Oizumi plant apart from the Subaru-ch and Yajima factories is that no finished automobiles are assembled in Oizumi. Instead, their entire production capability is used to construct Subaru vehicles’ internal mechanisms.

4. Subaru’s Gunma Roots Reach Back to Nakajima Aircraft Company

Subaru’s origins of operations within Gunma reach back beyond today’s age of the automobile. The present-day Ota North (Otakita) plant can trace its ancestry to the Nakajima Aircraft company who operated within the area prior to and through World War II. After the conclusion of the war Nakajima metamorphized into Fuji Heavy Industries which formed the corporate identity to further evolve into Subaru as the auto manufacturer.

This change to Otakita reflects changes within Subaru itself. This meant that while at various times the site was making microvans, pick-up trucks and also dump trucks, its role at any one time was not monotonous, although as all car manufacture has been relocated, part of Subaru’s larger structure it remains.

5. Subaru’s Automotive Identity Began Under Fuji Heavy Industries

The identity of Subaru as a car marque can be attributed to Fuji Heavy Industries president Kenji Kita in the late 1950s, where he proposed “Subaru” a Japanese name that was representative of the Pleiades star cluster, and adopted it as the brand name. Subaru made its debut on the automotive world, in 1954 when the 1500 saloon was launched. This became a pioneering move in the history of the marque, and one that led to the development of a truly independent marque of car that later produced unique designs; Unique Engineering would come to defined the brand of the car, most notably from 1966 when the famous boxer engine made its debut, in front wheel drive form, for the Subaru 1000.

In 1954, the advent of the 1500 sedan officially marked the dawn of Subaru as an automobile manufacturer, following the corporation’s extensive industrial background. The significance of Kenji Kita rests partly upon his relentless determination and insistence on forging the Subaru brand, directly associating the new enterprise with the Pleiades star constellation as it is called by the Japanese and by so doing, distinguishing it clearly from its industrial predecessors. Furthermore, in 1966, Subaru debuted yet another turning point: the development and adoption of the boxer engine by the Subaru 1000.

6. Subaru of Indiana Automotive Became Its North American Production Base

Its major production facility outside Asia, beyond anywhere in the Pacific, occurs at the Subaru of Indiana Automotive facility, Lafayette Indiana. An extensive 820-acre production complex, employing more than 5900 skilled laborers has become of significant import to the North American production requirements of Subaru vehicles. Initially established in 1989 as a joint venture with Isuzu the plant became operational with the manufacture of the first Subaru Legacy sedan on September 11, 1989.

It’s named this because its focus is beyond automobiles to include an aviation subdivision that produces advanced structural components for military and commercial aircraft. This aspect ties into the wider industriality of the company and the engineering legacy it draws upon to be what Subaru is. Minor stake ownership is held by Toyota which does have cooperative partnerships in ventures such as the BRZ sports car, and Solterra EVs, with the latter being made in a Toyota factory. Toyota ownership doesn’t take away from Subaru’s corporate autonomy to a vast extent when considering competing marques are absorbed in vast conglomerate entities such as Stellantis, while the former can still choose its engineering focus, design and overall corporate identity.

9. Subaru’s Production Footprint Is Smaller And More Focused

What separates Subaru from its key Japanese competitors is the highly organized, and centralized nature of its manufacturing presence. While Toyota, Honda and Nissan each have extensive manufacturing complexes spread across North America, Europe, Latin America, and Asia to bypass imports, rely on direct sales to dealership networks, and use strategically placed overseas manufacturing bases like Mitsubishi’s bases in Southeast Asia (chiefly Thailand, and Indonesia, with its vehicle designs coming largely from Japan) as well as Mazda’s hybrid Japanese, with overseas production operations in Mexico and China, only two geographic areas produce nearly all of Subaru’s world vehicles.

What is even more conspicuous about this approach from Subaru is how stark it is relative to that of many of the other larger Japanese manufacturer competitors, not one of the biggest players has focused manufacturing in the relatively small number of large locations in which Subaru has built its manufacturing expertise. Instead, Subaru utilizes Gunma for its Japan-bound production while offering to serve the growing North American market with a formidable assembly presence in Lafayette, IN. Furthermore, concentration offers Subaru tight control over manufacturing, engineering processes.

10. Focused Production Keeps Subaru Punching Above Its Weight

It’s Subaru’s relatively meager international manufacturing presence which helps show why such a small automaker still makes such a great showing among global producers. More than half of Subaru’s total North American vehicle volume, specifically many of the car brand’s most favored crossovers are assembled domestically within Subaru’s Indiana manufacturing plant thereby protecting them from a tariff from foreign-made vehicles and providing more than a million of American jobs to support them, meanwhile models such as the Forester and WRX along with the Subaru BRZ still retain the authentic native JDM flavor of being produced domestically within Japan. This Japanese-American split between models gives Subaru a focused manufacturing setup for very different markets.

Transnational operations and Thai assembly even further expand that radius without turning Subaru into the kind of manufacturer whose footprint comprises a huge number of dislocated production lines.
