8 Groundbreaking Classic Cars That Defined the Future of Automotive Design

We are thrilled to explore remarkable classic cars that were on sale to the public before the end of the 20th century. Each of these models was futuristic in its own individual way. 1. 1934 Chrysler Airflow

Chrysler Airflow was one of the first cars to be produced that utilized aerodynamic designs. There were several different variations, one of which was labelled as DeSoto and not Chrysler. Notably, each of these cars possessed curved designs that broke away from the standard boxy designs in the industry. In fact, they were so unorthodox that they failed to gain much of the customer base that was expecting something else. The aerodynamic design of these cars was so advanced for the era. The car was one of a kind as it broke away from the traditional approach to making cars. Below some reasons why Chrysler Airflow is special;

Aerodynamic Ideas Ahead of Their Time:

  • One of the first aerodynamic production cars

Another unique feature about Chrysler Airflow was that it had headlights that were positioned at the front. Unlike most of the contemporary cars where the lights jutted out on either end of the radiator, the lights were integrated. The design was the talk of the town as well as a big hit, but buyers only bought the conventional boxy cars from the competitors which led to the failure of Airflow. 2. 1934 Citroën Traction Avant

Front-wheel drive was not something new or innovative and neither was the independent suspension systems, but both technologies were rarely utilized in the mass-produced cars of that era. What made the Traction Avant special was the combination of these technologies and yet another technological advancement. The combination of these rare technologies, which were not mass-produced, made the Traction Avant one of the most advanced cars of its time.

Innovations Built Into One Design:

  • Used independent suspension
  • Offered unibody construction
  • Created a lower body
  • Remained in production decades

It is the unibody construction that plays a significant role in the contribution to the car’s low-riding design. The car possessed one of the most advanced car designs imaginable considering the fact that it was made more than a decade before the Second World War. The development process and the new factory that had to be built for it left Citroën in massive debt. However, under the ownership of Michelin, Citroën continued to produce the Traction Avant for two decades, eventually creating one of the most advanced mass-produced vehicles of that time.

3. 1935 Chevrolet Suburban

The sudden surge in the popularity of the SUVs is mostly attributed to the twenty-first century, but the fact remains that the SUVs existed long before the year 2000. In fact, the first Suburban capitalized very well on the sense of freedom of the average American. The car was ideal in meeting the demands of the average American who was eager to embrace the freedom of the road. Unlike most of the other cars of that time, the 1935 Suburban provided a perfect combination of seating room for several persons and a large amount of storage space for other goods.

In fact, the 1935 Suburban proved to be a pioneer of family practicality as it enabled people to carry several persons and lots of storage space for the necessities of traveling. The car’s impact reverberated throughout the automotive industry as other automakers were forced to consider the importance of flexibility and freedom of family travel.

4. 1935 Peugeot 402

Peugeot 402 was not a typical pioneer as compared to some of the other automobiles that had been discussed in this article. Unlike others, the Peugeot 402 was futuristic but failed in its sales department to capitalize on the success of the other models in the same generation. The car was similar to the Chrysler that had been launched in the previous year except that it took aerodynamic to a whole new level. The car illustrated how car manufacturers could continue to develop aerodynamic technologies even in times when they are not in demand.

A Distinctive Approach To Aerodynamics:

  • Advanced aerodynamic body design
  • Resembled the Chrysler profile
  • Hid headlights behind grille
  • Preserved smooth airflow
  • Feature appeared on later models

Peugeot decided to hide its headlights behind the grille where the opening allows for the free airflow. They did not impede the car’s aerodynamics as they are able to illuminate the road ahead without interfering with the airflow. However, the same feature was seen on the later 202 and 302 models. The feature was not utilized by any of the other car manufacturers and it did not last for long for Peugeot. Thus, the 402 model did not catch on as a pioneering model that would have dictated the future of automobile technology. Rather, it was a car that failed to make as much impact as expected and therefore disappeared soon afterwards. The 402 illustrated that the futuristic approach to automobile construction was an approach that could take aerodynamics to a whole new level.

5. 1936 Cord 810

Compared to the competition, Cord took the idea of integrating headlights to the next level. On the 810 model as well as the later 812 model, the American manufacturer took the liberty of hiding the headlights. In fact, the headlights were located within the front wings of the car. The headlights were revealed when the switch on the dashboard was activated. Such headlights were able to illuminate the car’s front. In fact, the cord’s 810 model featured pop-up headlights that were hidden from view until they were needed.

A Radical Take On Headlight Design:

  • Completely concealed front headlights

  • Used horizontal front louvres
  • Removed traditional vertical grille
  • Created a sweeping front profile

Other than the pop-up headlights, the Cord did away with the traditional vertical grille that was the convention of the time and substituted it with horizontal front louvers to allow the cool air to get to the radiator. The resulting wide front sweep created a car whose design was so radically futuristic and it was to resonate throughout the history of automobiles. Cord’s design was so inspirational that it led to the creation later of the 1940s Hypomobile Skylark and Graham Hollywood. The two cars replicated the Cord’s front design with horizontal front louvers. However, the two failed to copy one of the most innovative features that came with the Cord: the pop-up headlights. The 810 model was a harbinger of the futuristic automobiles that were to come.

6. 1937 Vauxhall 10-4

Previously, Vauxhall appeared not to be interested in smaller cars after its early models. In fact, the company did not see a good reason why it should focus its attention on small cars. It was only after realizing the financial implications that the company had to make a small passenger car referred to as the 10-4 or the H-type.

Advanced Features In A Compact Car:

  • Featured unibody construction
  • Used hydraulic brakes
  • Had torsion-bar suspension
  • Included independent front suspension
  • Offered synchromesh on two gears

The Vauxhall 10-4 transformed the British 10-horsepower market with advanced technologies such as unibody construction, hydraulic brakes, torsion bar independent front suspension, and synchromesh gears, making it surprisingly ahead of its time for a small family car. However, these innovations could not save Vauxhall as World War II forced the company to shift from small cars to trucks and tanks in 1940. After the war, the 10-4 returned but struggled against competition because it was slow and expensive, leading Vauxhall to exit the market in 1948. The company would not return to the small-car segment until the Viva arrived 15 years later.

7. 1948 Tucker 48

Beneath its advanced features, the Tucker 48 utilized a rear-mounted aluminum-block flat six-cylinder engine. However, the casual passer-by would always be drawn by the car’s fascinating body design and the beautiful silhouette that it possessed. The beauty of the silhouette appears to have been far more imaginative and futuristic than anything that had been witnessed in the automobile world of that time. The car stood out from the rest of the automobile models because of its futuristic design and its unique features. The Tucker model was so unique that it threatened to change the world of the automobiles.

A Futuristic Design With Unique Details:

  • Used rear-mounted flat-six engine
  • Featured an aluminium-block engine
  • Created a modern silhouette
  • Integrated three distinct headlights
  • Placed one headlight centrally

The most unique detail about the Tucker 48 was the fact that it had three distinct headlights. It had two headlights at the sides and one in the middle. This feature made the car look futuristic as it was a characteristic that had not been witnessed in the automobile world. In fact, the middle headlight made it possible for the car to possess a unique identity as a brand. In another reality, perhaps the 48 model would have changed the automobile industry for decades. However, the Tucker Company closed down after a short while with many claiming that other automobile manufacturers threatened its existence. The Tucker 48 had such a short lifespan and thus its futuristic design was not able to catch on in the automobile industry.

8. 1949 Jaguar XK120

When the XK120 was unveiled at the 1948 London Motor Show, the audience was under the impression that Jaguar has unveiled a racing car. In fact, Jaguar started making the XK120 as a showcase for its straight-six XK engine. When the model was unveiled at the London Motor Show, it captured the hearts and minds of the people. This prompted Jaguar to put into production the car that was to become the XK120. The car captured the heart of the public due to its combination of features that made it appealing to the eye and powerful to the touch.

Where Beauty Met Performance:

  • Debuted at London Motor Show
  • Showcased the new straight-six engine
  • Featured aerodynamic visual elegance
  • Initially used aluminium bodywork
  • Later transitioned to steel

The XK120 made the debut of XK engine even more special as it had visual appeal that the public found irresistible. The visual appeal was the result of the car’s aerodynamic design that could not be found on many other automobiles of the time. Most of the cars that had been made used aluminium bodywork. The XK120 also utilized aluminium before adopting the use of steel in 1950 to cut production costs. The car’s beauty was to propel Jaguar to create the XK140 model in 1954 as well as the XK150 model in 1957. The XK120 was a car that demonstrated how far futuristic design and performance could go, and it played a significant role in creating the future of Jaguar’s sports cars. This is a reminder that looking ahead and utilizing innovative technologies can lead to the creation of the future of the automobile world.
