2026’s First Quarter Exposed Major Auto Safety Problems. What Do the Recalls Reveal?

Automotive safety data from the first quarter of 2026 reveals just how quickly vehicle recall activity can escalate when a single defect affects widely shared platforms and components. According to a comprehensive Bizzy Car report, 103 separate recall campaigns were issued across the United States during Q1 2026, affecting an extraordinary 12,154,289 vehicles. The scale of these recalls makes the quarter particularly significant, especially as modern vehicles increasingly depend on interconnected electrical systems, software, cameras, sensors, and electronic safety equipment. Rather than being spread evenly across hundreds of small campaigns, much of the recall volume was concentrated in a handful of enormous actions involving some of the industry’s largest manufacturers.

For vehicle owners, these numbers are more than just industry statistics. A recall can involve something as critical as braking performance, air-bag deployment, steering control, windshield visibility, rearview cameras, trailer brakes, or high-voltage battery systems. The Q1 2026 figures show that safety problems are increasingly tied not only to traditional mechanical components but also to the complex electronic architecture found in modern automobiles. Understanding which manufacturers experienced the largest recalls, which components created the greatest risks, and how automakers are repairing affected vehicles provides consumers with a clearer picture of the safety challenges facing today’s automotive industry.

1. Ford Accounted for Nearly Two-Thirds of All Recalled Vehicles

The Ford Motor Company led the list of Q1 2026 recalled car producers by a large margin by accounting for 8,087,594 recalled vehicles out of 27 recall actions. The amount was nearly two-thirds of all the recalled cars in the Q1 and made Ford the most significant producer contributing to the total amount of 12.15 million recalled cars throughout the country. The next company in the list was Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing with 1,098,243 cars and 9 recall actions. Third was Hyundai Motor America that recorded 806,566 cars in 7 campaigns. Chrysler accounted for 726,920 cars in 4 actions and Nissan North America, Inc. recalled 669,197 cars in 5 actions.

  • Ford recalled 8.08 million vehicles
  • Toyota recalled 1.09 million vehicles
  • Hyundai affected 806,566 vehicles
  • Chrysler affected 726,920 vehicles
  • Nissan affected 669,197 vehicles

All together the five companies accounted for 93.7% of all the cars that had to be recalled during the quarter. It clearly shows that a defect in the platform, component or the electronic system could easily turn into a national safety issue. Apart from the companies listed above, there were other producers with significant activity like Volkswagen Group of America, Inc. with 169,659 cars, BMW of North America, LLC with 146,412 cars, Kia America, Inc. with 143,563 cars, American Honda Motor Co. with 85,002 and General Motors, LLC with 82,827 cars. And even minor recalls from other luxurious and emerging manufacturers added to the total amount of the quarter’s recalled cars.

2. Ford’s Campaign 26C10 Became the Quarter’s Biggest Recall

The largest recall of the Q1 2026 was the Ford’s campaign 26C10, that affected 4,381,878 cars. NHTSA ID for the campaign was 26V104000 and it happened on February 20, 2026. It was a compliance issue related to the Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 108 that caused issues with the car’s electrical systems. The affected cars were certain 2021-2026 F-150, 2022-2026 Super Duty trucks such as the F-250 SD, F-350 SD, F-450 SD, and F-550 SD, Maverick, 2024-2026 Ranger, 2023-2026 F-600 SD, 2022-2027 Lincoln Navigator, Expedition, and 2026 E-Transit.

Campaign 26C10 Highlights:

This defect could cause issues in the operation of the trailer lighting and trailer brakes, that would cause problems to the driver in the situation with the trailer attached. Such large amount of recalled cars shows how a relative specific defect could easily turn into millions of recalled cars with the help of platform sharing and common electronic architecture. In fact, this campaign was the largest individual campaign since Chrysler’s campaign involving 4.8 million cars in the second quarter of 2018. The scale of the campaign played a crucial role in the large amount of cars that were eligible for over-the-air software repairs.

3. Ford’s Other Major Recalls Focused on Rearview Cameras

Ford’s recall activity didn’t end with the 26C10 campaign. There were some other big recall actions related to rearview camera function performed by the company. Campaign 26C11, with the NHTSA ID 26V123000 issued on March 3, 2026, involved 889,950 cars. Certain 2020-2022 Escape, Lincoln Corsair, 2020-2024 Lincoln Aviator, and Ford Explorer cars could have a defect causing an incorrectly generated rearview camera image.

Major Ford Visibility Recalls:

  • Campaign 26C11 affected 889,950 vehicles
  • Campaign 26S09 affected 849,310 vehicles
  • Camera image failures increased risks
  • Several Ford models were involved
  • Rearward visibility remained a concern

Ford’s campaign 26S09, that happened on March 3, 2026 and got the NHTSA ID 26V124000, affected another 849,310 cars. It concerned certain 2021-2026 Ford Bronco and 2021-2024 Ford Edge cars because of the rearview camera image failure. Such campaigns show how a relatively new electronic feature that many people consider as a necessity nowadays and take for granted, can turn into a safety issue and become dangerous if it doesn’t work properly. Something that people once treated as convenience became an important part of modern vehicle safety.

4. Windshield Wiper Failures Created Another Major Visibility Risk

There were some other visibility issues apart from the rearview camera problem that caused another major recall of Ford in Q1 2026. Campaign 26S14, with the NHTSA ID 26V117000 and issued on March 3, 2026, affected 604,533 cars. Certain 2020-2022 Explorer, Escape, Lincoln Aviator, and Lincoln Corsair cars were affected by the defect causing the windshield wipers to fail to operate. The problem becomes particularly dangerous when the windshield wiper fails to work in adverse weather conditions like rain or snow, because in that case driver loses the ability to see the road.

After some time, Ford issued another campaign 26S24 with the NHTSA ID 26V204000, which took place on March 31, 2026 and affected 422,613 cars. The defect concerned certain 2021-2023 Lincoln Navigator and Expedition cars and some 2022-2023 Super Duty trucks because of the potential failure of the windshield wipers. The repetition of the visibility-related defects in the major campaigns shows how important are simple visibility systems in the modern cars. Modern vehicle could have sophisticated driver assistance system, but it can be of little help if the visibility systems fail to work.

5. Electrical Defects Were the Biggest Recall Category

When looking at the category of the components in all 103 recall campaigns of the Q1 2026, it turns out that electrical system defects are the dominating type of defects. Defects in the electrical system affected 5,501,070 cars, which is 45.39% of all the recalled cars in the quarter. Back-over prevention system defects ranked the second with 2,453,092 cars (20.24%). Defects in the visibility-related systems ranked third with 1,027,532 cars or 8.48%. It clearly demonstrates how heavily the safety of the modern cars depends on the electrical and electronic systems.

  • Visibility systems affected 1.02 million
  • Air bags affected 766,188 vehicles
  • Seating affected 698,550 vehicles

Defects in the air bags affected 766,188 cars while the defects in the seating assemblies affected 698,550 cars. Defects in the engine and engine cooling system were responsible for 690,781 affected cars while the suspension defects for 534,022. The rest of the categories include: equipment, gasoline fuel system, seat belts, powertrain components, exterior lighting, steering, hydraulic service brakes, structure, wheels, tires and lane departure systems. The wide range of components shows that the modern vehicle recall risks are not concentrated anymore in one particular engineering area.

6. Hyundai, Toyota, and Chrysler Also Had Major Safety Campaigns

Even though the majority of the recalled cars in the quarter were produced by the Ford, there were other major automobile producers that had some serious problems too. Campaign 292 of Hyundai Motor America with the NHTSA ID 26V034000 that took place on January 23, 2026 affected 568,576 Palisade cars from 2020-2025 model’s years. The problem concerned improper side curtain air bag deployment and non-compliance with FMVSS 226 requirements potentially causing injuries during the crash.

Major Non-Ford Campaigns:

  • Hyundai recalled 568,576 Palisades
  • Toyota affected 550,007 vehicles
  • Chrysler recalled 456,287 vehicles
  • Nissan affected 323,917 vehicles
  • Multiple safety systems were involved

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing issued campaigns 26TB06 and 26TA06 with the NHTSA ID 26V128000, that took place on March 5, 2026 and affected 550,007 cars. It concerned certain 2021-2024 Highlander and Highlander Hybrid models because of the second-row seat backs locking issues. Chrysler campaign 03D affected 456,287 cars because of the trailer lighting and trailer brake failures in several Jeep and Ram models. Nissan North America, Inc. recalled 323,917 Rogue cars due to engine bearing failures potentially causing drive power losses, engine damage or hot-oil leakage leading to fire hazards.

7. Some Recalls Came With Serious Park Outside Warnings

Not all recalls have the same severity and Q1 2026 saw several recall campaigns severe enough to get Park Outside or Do Not Drive warnings. In total, six recall campaigns involving 97,774 cars were accompanied by such warnings. Five of them were Park Outsides because of the fire risks or fuel leaks, that meant that owners of affected cars were supposed not to store the cars inside garage or other enclosed structures until the repairs would be done.

  • Ford issued a Do Not Drive alert

Subaru provided the advisory WRD-26 involving 69,153 cars because of the defective fuel cap causing the fuel leaks. Mercedes-Benz provided a Park Outside warning with 11,895 cars due to the high-voltage battery fire risks; Volkswagen provided the campaign 93EW with 670 cars because of the high-voltage battery fire risks too. Nissan recalled 51 cars under the campaign R25F1 because of the high-voltage battery short circuit risks and Volvo provided campaign R10355 with 40 cars because of the high-voltage battery fire risks. Ford provided an especially severe Do Not Drive warning under campaign 26C07 with 15,965 cars because of the hydraulic brake loss risks.

8. Over-the-Air Updates Became a Major Recall Repair Tool

Another important development in Q1 2026 recall data was the sharp increase in the number of cars eligible for over-the-air software repairs. In total, 5,719,817 cars, or approximately 47% of all the recalled cars in the quarter, could potentially get remote software fixes. It is dramatically bigger than the approximate 15% average value for OTA-eligible recall volume in the past four years. This demonstrates the integration of vehicle software into the critical systems and manufacturers’ ability to solve some safety defects with software updates without visiting a dealership.

  • 5.71 million vehicles were OTA eligible
  • OTA repairs represented 47 percent
  • Ford accounted for most vehicles
  • Hyundai followed with 125,528
  • Six manufacturers used OTA fixes

The Ford campaign 26C10 accounted for more than three quarters of all OTA-eligible cars involved in recalls during the quarter. The Ford accounted for 5,487,017 OTA-eligible cars, while Hyundai provided 125,528 cars, Kia logged 42,677 cars, Lucid recorded 14,719 cars, General Motors provided 11,829 cars and Jaguar registered 2,278 cars. OTA technology can make recall repairs faster and easier, but it doesn’t mean that there is no need for physical servicing anymore. Hardware issues, mechanical defects, inspections, replacements and calibration still require a dealership.

9. Recall Concentration Is Creating New Challenges for Dealers

Another important operational challenge that can be revealed with the help of the Q1 data is the recall concentration. When millions of vehicles become subject to recalls because of a small number of major campaigns, dealers can face huge number of customers requiring repair. Ryan Maher, CEO of Bizzy Car, pointed out how thousands of vehicles with open recalls can stay in the database of a dealer and it is very important that dealers had to have effective methods to identify them, contact the owners, organize repair appointments and assure that everything will be done.

In that way, dealers play an important role in bridging the gap between identifying safety defect and removal of that defect from the vehicle in use. Proper communication, repair scheduling and customer follow-up are very important for that process.

10. Checking Recalls Remains One of the Most Important Steps for Owners

From the point of view of the car owners, the big Q1 2026 recalls numbers show the importance of regular check of whether their vehicles have open recalls. They can do it with the help of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s free recall search tool by entering their vehicle’s 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number. This can tell whether there is any open recall concerning electrical systems, airbags, brakes, cameras, wipers, fuel systems, battery components and other safety critical equipment. Identifying the recall is just the first step and it should be followed by the repair of the defect.

  • Check the vehicle identification number
  • Review open safety recalls
  • Follow manufacturer repair instructions
  • Schedule repairs without unnecessary delays
  • Take serious warnings seriously

Q1 2026 showed how the automotive safety defects are changing along with technological evolution of the vehicles. Now electrical architecture, software, cameras, sensors, high-voltage batteries and driver assistance systems coexist with the traditional mechanical components, providing new opportunities for both innovation and failure. The big numbers of Q1 recalls also demonstrate how quickly a single defect can spread to millions of cars when the manufacturers share platforms or technologies across their broad model ranges.
