
Subaru is expanding its electric vehicle lineup with the 2026 Trailseeker, an all-electric mid-size SUV designed for drivers who need more capability and space than the compact Solterra provides. Its combination of dual-motor power, all-wheel drive, useful ground clearance, and generous cargo room gives it a distinctly adventurous identity within the growing EV market.
The Trailseeker develops 375 horsepower and offers an estimated driving range of up to 281 miles in its most efficient configuration. It can also tow as much as 3,500 pounds, making it suitable for carrying outdoor equipment, pulling a small camping trailer, or supporting active families who do not want electrification to limit their travel plans.
With a starting price of $41,445, including destination charges, the Trailseeker competes directly with several established electric crossovers. Subaru has attempted to distinguish it through recognizable outdoor-focused styling, strong acceleration, standard Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive, practical interior space, and integrated access to the North American Tesla Supercharger network.

1. Positioned Above the Subaru Solterra
The 2026 Trailseeker is positioned above the current Solterra in Subaru’s slowly growing electric vehicle lineup and targets those consumers who love the small EV’s efficiency but need more passenger and cargo room, greater towing capacity, or the higher levels of performance needed for a longer trip, growing family, or a day at the outdoors.

The length of the Trailseeker extends by just over six inches more than the Subaru Solterra giving it a more imposing silhouette, not to mention being nearly an inch higher. Sitting at 190.8 inches of overall length, the Trailseeker comes as a sizable electric SUV. The body is nearly identical in height as the car sits at 65.9 inches while having an identical width measurement of 73.2 inches. Sitting in between with both of those dimensions is the wheel base of 112.2 inches.
These proportions make the Trailseeker look and feel more like a raised electric wagon than a traditional upright and boxy SUV. Subaru’s familiar design language, also seen in models such as the Outback, gives the vehicle a recognizable and well-established appearance. At the same time, the Trailseeker maintains a modern identity that suits its fully electric powertrain. Its carefully shaped body provides enough interior room to carry passengers comfortably without sacrificing practicality. It also offers generous cargo space for luggage, everyday belongings, outdoor equipment, and other recreational gear.

2. Rugged Exterior Design and Practical Details
Under the Skin Subaru has updated the Trailseeker with exterior styling that blends aerodynamic performance with the rugged cues one would expect to see in something ready for the trails. The bumpers have pronounced lines and the shortened overhang, six-LED headlight array, and an illuminated Subaru emblem define the modern face of the model.

The trailseeker’s design is capped off at the back by a 3D illuminated Subaru badge, which ties directly into the design on the nose. Cladding of dark plastic Protects the lower areas of the SUV from any small rocks, twigs or slight scrapes you will inevitable pick up on a dirt path. High profile heavy-duty roofrails have been attached that can accommodate an array of roof attachments for carrying cycles, a cargo box, camping equipment and anything else you want to pack along for the ride.
The entry-level Trailseeker models will get 18 inch alloys, while larger 20 inch ones can be had on higher specification models. In our opinion the larger size will offer an improved visual statement over the 18 inch ones, but the smaller size can improve efficiency, increase tyre sidewall size, and offer better protection when driving over damaged surfaces.

Beneath the exterior of the Subaru Trailseeker lies a powerful dual-motor electric powertrain featuring two AC permanent-magnet electric motors. One motor is responsible for driving the front wheels, while the second motor supplies power to the rear wheels, creating an effective all-wheel-drive system. According to Subaru’s official specifications, each electric motor is capable of producing up to 224 horsepower. When both motors work together, the Trailseeker delivers a strong combined power output of 375 horsepower. This twin-motor setup ensures continuous all-wheel drive, not as though the rear motor is only used occasionally as an extra bit of grip. With this dual motor setup it retains Subaru’s consistent goal of a predictable four-wheel control system in rain, snow, mud, gravel – basically anything a two-wheel drive crossover might get bogged down in.
The Trailseeker gets a multilink suspension system at the back, complementing the front-strut configuration to control vehicle body movement while also maximizing comfort. The Trailseeker has a braking setup engineered to manage the considerable weight and power of an electric SUV; it features six-piston calipers clamping on 12.9-inch ventilated discs up front and four-piston calipers on 12.5-inch brake discs out back. Combined, they are certainly up to the task of slowing the electric SUV with its weight in the ballpark of 4,553 pounds.

4. Ground Clearance and Off-Road Technology
Ground Clearance: The Trailseeker can give you as much as 8.5 inches of clearance from the ground (some off-road metrics rate it at 8.3 inches). That’s a significant bit of separation between the vehicle’s battery pack and lower chassis, rocks and other obstacles on trail, snow, and ruts; it’s not high enough to be inconvenient when the car is just parked.

Subaru adds its own traction-management hardware and software, X-Mode, to the SUV. The driver has access to two drive modes within the system: Snow/Dirt and Deep Snow/Mud. The vehicle’s powertrain and electronic controls then adjust individually to send power and apply the electronic braking system for optimal grip when the Trailseeker rolls onto loose soil, an off-camber slick incline, deeper snow and/or soft mud.
Additional driver assistance features for tricky trails: Grip Control. Downhill Assist Control. Grip Control and Downhill Assist Control work together on off-road courses. They maintain the correct speed and keep individual tyres in contact with the surface on gradients, cross-slopes, and uneven surfaces where the tyres might briefly lose solid contact with the ground, so the driver can focus on directing the vehicle.

5. Acceleration, Handling, and Braking
When a one-foot rollout was excluded for testing, the Trailseeker Touring turned a zero-to-60 mph in a swift 3.9 seconds-at least a second faster than the sub-4.0-sec run that Subaru projected for this EV, and a whole lot quicker than we managed with similarly sized battery-electric SUVs like the Honda Prologue or one of Chevrolet’s Blazers or Equinoxs.

At 110mph, the Trailseeker covers the quarter-mile distance in a brisk 12.5 seconds, ultimately capping at a somewhat tame electronically-limited top speed of 115mph. The car was a willing partner when we asked for increased speed through gears, covering the 30-50 mph range in only 2.3 seconds, while 50-70 mph came in around 3.3 seconds.
On its 300-foot skidpad with Bridgestone Turanza EL450 tires, the sport utility racked up 0.81 g’s of lateral grip. During our testing, it took 181 feet for the SUV to stop from 70 mph. From a dead stop at 100 mph, it required 365 feet to bring the electric vehicle to a halt, a formidable undertaking for a quick and substantial EV.

6. Battery Capacity and Driving Range
Power comes from a liquid-cooled lithium-ion battery pack rated for a usable capacity of around 67kWh, with nominal capacities going as high as 74.7kWh. Liquid-cooled battery also allows it to stay more uniform in temperature when quick-charging, during the high speeds that can be reached on the freeway and while used outdoors.

The most economical version of the Trailseeker can muster about 281 miles of range, according to the EPA. But pick the slighter more upmarket Touring model or go for the larger 20-inch wheels and that number drops down closer to 274 as the more equipment, weight and rolling resistance will drain the batteries faster.
In a real-life test driving on a highway at 75mph it took the Trailseeker about 190 miles before it requires charging. Comparing the laboratory range estimates with its actual result at consistent speed it shows the importance of factors such as climate, speed, altitude, wheels choice, cabin heating and driving habits in EV range.

7. Efficiency and Charging Performance
EPA efficiency estimates reach approximately 126 MPGe in the city, 107 MPGe on the highway, and 117 MPGe combined for the most efficient configuration. Other testing produced figures around 125 MPGe city, 103 MPGe highway, and 114 MPGe combined under different conditions and equipment combinations.

A standard North American Charging Standard port gives Trailseeker owners direct access to compatible Tesla Superchargers without requiring a separate adapter. The vehicle supports DC fast charging at up to 150 kW, while an observed 10-to-90-percent session maintained an average rate close to 100 kW.
With adequate conditions, you’ll be able to charge your Trailseeker’s battery from 10 to 80 percent of full capacity in about 28 minutes. A 90 percent charge will be achieved in slightly more than twice that, or about 36 minutes, giving you a large chunk of range if you only stop for a short break. For casual top-ups at home, the Trailseeker will work with AC Level 2 power of up to 11 kW, more than enough to have many owners start their morning ride after sitting on a charger for the night.

8. Passenger Space, Technology, and Cargo Capacity
The Trailseeker’s flat-floor cabin design helps create a spacious and open environment for passengers in both the front and rear rows. The front section of the cabin provides approximately 54 cubic feet of space, giving the driver and front passenger plenty of room to sit comfortably. Meanwhile, the rear row offers about 40 cubic feet of cabin volume for passengers. This generous interior space allows adults in both rows to enjoy sufficient legroom and move more freely. As a result, the Trailseeker can provide a comfortable and relaxing experience, particularly during longer journeys.

In front of a free-standing digital-instrument-display is a rectangular steering wheel, and in the middle of everything is a 14-inch, touchscreen-based, center console mounted information screen, the biggest in any Subaru production model. As a positive that 14-inch touchscreen offers both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay as standard feature across the model-line, also of wireless connection too.
In terms of space, the cargo area offers around 30 cubic feet behind the second row and nearly 72 cubic feet with the second row folded Flat. Carrying the Trailseeker we managed to pack 11 carry-on bags into the storage space behind the second row and 27 with the second row down it can come in handy for families with room for gear, and camping or road trips.

9. Premium, Limited, and Touring Trims
The Trailseeker Premium has a starting price of $41,445, which includes a destination charge of $1,450. This entry-level grade comes equipped with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system for improved traction and balanced performance. It rides on 18-inch wheels and features a large 14-inch touchscreen for easy access to entertainment and vehicle controls. The model also includes a power-adjustable driver’s seat and a power liftgate for added convenience. Keyless entry and a push-button start system further make everyday access and operation easier.

The trim’s offerings include an available digital key, a foot-powered tailgate and a 1,500-watt outlet for powering accessories inside of the cargo space.
There is a flagship Touring trim ($48,005 to start) that comes with front seat heaters and ventilators. The car also has a front-leg heater for extra warmth on chilly days, and a standard digital rearview mirror for the Touring trim, among other benefits. Because of a special paint color and real leather interior, the tested vehicle listed for $48,700.

10. Safety, Warranty, and Overall Position
The EyeSight suite of driver-assistance features comes standard with every Trailseeker. EyeSight’s standard amenities are forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning, lane change assist, blind-spot monitoring, reverse automatic braking, driver attention monitoring, and front cross-traffic alert.
