10 Strange WWII Aircraft That Looked Wrong but Pushed Engineering to the Limit

World War II created an extraordinary period of experimentation in military aviation. As nations competed for control of the skies, aircraft engineers were pushed to develop faster, stronger, and more specialized machines than ever before. Traditional aircraft layouts were no longer always enough to meet rapidly changing battlefield requirements, so designers began exploring unusual engine arrangements, asymmetrical airframes, rocket propulsion, early jet technology, and completely unconventional ways of getting military equipment into combat zones. Some of these aircraft looked strange because their designers were solving very specific problems that conventional airplanes could not handle effectively.

Not every unusual aircraft became a successful weapon, and many never reached large-scale production. However, their experimental designs helped engineers understand new possibilities in aerodynamics, propulsion, visibility, speed, and military logistics. Some became important operational aircraft, while others remained prototypes or short-lived experiments. From the slow but highly effective K-Class Blimp to the rocket-powered Messerschmitt Me-163 Komet, the bizarre Blohm & Voss Bv 141, and the coal-powered Lippisch P.13a concept, these machines show how far engineers were willing to push aviation technology when wartime demands required completely new solutions.

1. The K-Class Blimp

Although the design of K-Class Blimps looks rather primitive in comparison with contemporary fighters and bombers, this aircraft fulfilled a highly practical military task. K-Class Blimps were widely used by the United States Navy as anti-submarine aircraft for protecting shipping routes from German U-boats. Equipped with depth bombs and a Browning M2 .50 caliber machine gun, they patrolled shipping routes slowly and discovered enemy submarines to direct forces to attack them. They proved to be very useful because of their long endurance that allowed staying near convoys for long time.

The K-Class Blimp shows how speed is not always essential for the success in the warfare conducted from the aircraft. Their ability to move in the speed of convoys allowed to monitor the route continuously. About 89 thousand vessels were escorted by airships, and only one tanker SS Persephone was sunk by enemy torpedoes. Altogether, the Navy built 134 K-class blimps powered by two Pratt & Whitney Wasp radial engines. K-74 was lost during engagement with U-134 off Florida.

2. The Dornier Do-335 Pfeil

The Dornier Do-335 Pfeil looks rather unusual because of the way its two engines were placed. One of the engines was situated in the front of the aircraft, while the second one was placed in the rear. The latter was used for propelling the plane from the rear end. This solution allowed Dornier to use two engines and still to build a relatively clean configuration. As a result, the aircraft became a very fast heavy fighter which was able to reach the speed about 474 mph. Thus, this was the fastest piston-engined aircraft used by the Luftwaffe during the war.

Together with the unusual engine design, this aircraft was equipped with several innovative elements. The aircraft had retractable tricycle landing gear, internal bomb bay, and ejection seat. Its armament consisted of one 30 mm cannon and two 15 mm machine guns. Despite the impressive speed and performance of the aircraft, it was not able to participate actively in the conflict. Engine delivery delays and lack of manufacturing capacity prevented the aircraft from production. Only few were completed before the end of the war.

3. The Gloster Meteor

The Gloster Meteor represented one of the major changes in the technology of World War II aviation jet engines were implemented in the airplane successfully. This British aircraft was developed using the turbojet technology created by Frank Whittle and became the first jet fighter used operationally during the Second World War. The aircraft was armed with four Hispano 20 mm cannons and became the first Allied aircraft to fight from jet engines.

Although the Meteor entered the service rather late, it was not able to participate actively in the war. It was mainly used for defending Britain against attacks by German V-1 weapons and then participated in fighting over Europe. The aircraft did not play a great role in the war, but it became a highly successful platform after the end of the conflict. Hundreds of airplanes were manufactured, and they served in the several foreign air forces. Also several special modifications were created.

4. The Messerschmitt Me-163 Komet

One of the most unusual designs of World War II is the Messerschmitt Me-163 Komet an aircraft totally relying on rocket propulsion. Unlike many other aircraft, it does not use a piston or jet engines. This aircraft was designed to intercept rapidly bomber formations of the Allies, moving with great speed to a maximum height. It was very compact and able to exceed 1,000 km/h in flight and had a pair of MK 108 30mm cannons to attack bombers.

  • Had extremely limited powered flight

Despite its impressive performance, the Komet has several severe limitations that prevent it from being the revolutionary bomber interceptor aircraft. Firstly, its fuel is highly flammable and dangerous to operate. Secondly, the aircraft can fly powered only few minutes and then becomes a glider. Instead of usual landing gear, it uses a trolley for launching and special skid for landing. In total 370 examples were built, but because of its severe limitations, the aircraft was not widely used.

5. The Ryan FR-1 Fireball

This American fighter was designed as an attempt to combine technologies of two eras of aircraft engines. It has a conventional piston engine in the front of the aircraft and a jet engine in the rear part of the fuselage. Piston engine was responsible for the normal cruise flight, and the jet engine was supposed to provide additional speed in case of need. It was a transition solution for the United States Navy as jet propulsion was investigated for carriers.

  • Never saw wartime combat

Fireballs were assigned to the VF-66 squadron whose pilots completed carrier qualification training before the aircraft were supposed to be deployed to Pacific. However, Japan capitulated before the first combat flight of Fireballs. After the end of the war, the aircraft was tested in carrier operations until 1947. The structure of the aircraft could not withstand demanding carrier operations, and pure jets were developing very quickly.

6. The Heinkel He 111Z

This aircraft was designed for a very specific task: to pull the massive Messerschmitt Me 321 assault glider. Conventional aircraft had not sufficient power to perform this task, so German engineers decided to create a remarkable twin fuselage aircraft. They connected two fuselages of Heinkel He 111H-6 with a special wing, and added an extra Jumo engine between them. So, they have created the five engines aircraft with one of the most unusual outlines.

The He 111Z is a good example how sometimes logistics of the war required unusual design of the aircraft. Instead of designing a completely new heavy towing aircraft, engineers combined existing components and created a machine which can perform its unique function well enough. Limited quantity of this aircraft was built, including prototypes and production aircraft.

7. The Blohm & Voss Bv 141

One of the most unusual reconnaissance aircraft of World War II is the Blohm & Voss Bv 141. Its most remarkable feature is its unusual asymmetrical configuration, where the fuselage contains the crew and the engine and tail section occupy the other side. This weird design was not invented just for experiment’s sake. This unusual layout provides the aircraft with an excellent crew vision especially in the downward direction.

  • Only around 28 were built

Despite its weird configuration, this unusual aircraft performed quite well during testing. Nevertheless, there were some obstacles in the way of its mass production. At first, it was considered underpowered, and later on the stronger BMW 801 engine needed for further development was demanded by the Focke-Wulf Fw 190 fighter. Also, the conventional Focke-Wulf Fw 189 could perform reconnaissance mission efficiently, which reduced chances of mass production of Bv 141. As a result, only about 28 examples were built.

8. The Hafner Rotabuggy

The Hafner Rotabuggy tried to push the idea of airborne military transportation to extremes. This machine converted a standard Willys MB Jeep into a rotary-wing aircraft. It was designed by a helicopter designer Raoul Hafner and used an overhead rotor without an engine which was needed to power it. Instead, the airflow produced by movement of the vehicle started the rotation of the rotor. This unusual aircraft was intended to serve as a military vehicle transporter.

  • Used an unpowered rotor system
  • Designed for airborne delivery
  • Required an aircraft for towing
  • Never entered operational service

The test flights of this aircraft were not easy, especially during the initial ground testing when towing vehicles were not able to produce enough speed. Engineers used supercharged 4.5-liter Bentley engine for testing, and later used Armstrong Whitworth Whitley bomber as a towing aircraft. Nevertheless, military planners decided to use larger transport gliders for this task, and the Rotabuggy became unnecessary. Eventually, this project was abandoned.

9. The Curtiss-Wright XP-55 Ascender

The Curtiss-Wright XP-55 Ascender tried to challenge conventional fighter design with its pusher configuration. It meant that the engine was not located at the front of the aircraft and was placed toward the rear of the plane and was pushing it. Besides, the design of this aircraft included the canard layout and twin vertical tails which made it unique in appearance. At first, this unusual fighter was supposed to use a more powerful engine, but this decision had been canceled and the aircraft was equipped with a weaker Allison V1710-95 engine.

Curtiss-Wright XP-55 Ascender Highlights:

  • Used a rear-mounted engine
  • Featured a pusher propeller
  • Incorporated a canard layout
  • Had twin vertical tails
  • Only three prototypes were built

The XP-55 made its maiden flight in July 1943, but was not able to prove its high performance. It reached the speed about 390 mph which was insufficient comparing with conventional fighters. Besides, the first prototype of this fighter crashed during the stall which resulted in inversion, but fortunately pilot managed to survive. The aircraft became unnecessary due to the success of other aircraft (such as P-51 Mustang) and quick development of jet propulsion technology.

10. The Lippisch P.13a

Perhaps the most unusual aviation idea on the list is the Lippisch P.13a supersonic interceptor which was supposed to have the speed about 1,025 mph. This aircraft had a sharp triangular delta wing with the central vertical structure which housed the cockpit. The most remarkable feature of this unusual aircraft was its propulsion system. It was planned to use a ramjet with producer gas generated from powdered coal.

Lippisch P.13a Highlights:

  • Designed as a supersonic interceptor
  • Projected speeds above 1,000 mph
  • Featured a delta-wing configuration
  • Planned coal-based ramjet propulsion
  • Never reached powered flight

Coal was chosen as the source of fuel because of the shortage of conventional fuel in the late stages of the war. The P.13a concept was very aggressive for its combat duty some versions of it were supposed to physically ram enemy aircraft with reinforced wings. The aircraft was not built and remained just a design. A full-size DM-1 glider was built to test some aspects of the aerodynamic configuration.
