10 Distinctive Fiat Concept Cars That Showcased Design and Engineering Innovation

If ever a car company recognized the needs and desires of its native population, it was Fiat, with 70% of Italy’s car-buying public owning a product made by the Turin marque at the start of the 1960s. To broaden its appeal in other markets, the Italian manufacturer demonstrated a level of design flare and engineering innovation that played to its mainstream strengths without losing its distinct national character.

Concept cars provided the ultimate platform to transition technology and bold ideas from show floors to production lines. These fascinating prototypes gave Fiat’s designers and engineers the freedom to explore unusual approaches to styling, performance, safety, and propulsion. From gas-turbine technology to early electric motoring and experimental safety vehicles, the concepts revealed how creative freedom could push automotive engineering and styling beyond conventional boundaries.

1. 1954 Fiat 8001 Turbina

The 1954 Fiat 8001 Turbina signified Fiat’s willingness to embrace unconventional powerplant technologies as the Italian brand sought to enter the gas-turbine field. It made Fiat the second manufacturer, after Rover, to provide a credible gas-turbine concept. The engine at the heart of the Turbina was the work of the legendary Dante Giacosa. It had a two-stage centrifugal compressor, three can-type combustors, and a two-stage turbine for the compressor, and a single-stage turbine with a reduction gear for driving the rear wheels. The Turbina was unquestionably not your everyday piston-engine car, as it signaled Fiat’s serious intent to experiment with gas-turbine powerplants.

Turbina’s engines could deliver an impressive 295bhp at 22,000rpm, while Fiat claimed the car could achieve a top speed of 160mph. Despite the Turbina concept’s impressive statistics, it failed to overcome the fundamental practicality challenges of the technology. The technology was capital-intensive, while Turbina’s engines had reliability issues and tended to overheat under prolonged use. Turbina was just one of the many bold ideas that saw Fiat engineering venture far outside the box and test the limits of unconventional technologies.

2. 1964 Fiat 2300 S Coupé Speciale Lausanne

The 1964 Fiat 2300 S Coupé Speciale Lausanne signified how the elegant coachwork could transform even the most mundane aspects of a car. The Lausanne was one of the five Pininfarina-designed concepts based on the Fiat 2300S. It was first showcased at the Swiss National Exhibition in Lausanne, and later on, at the Geneva Motor Show in 1964, where the world saw the elegant transformation of a boxy Fiat into a stylish coupé. The Lausanne had a completely different character than the boxy Fiat 2000, in which the front, middle, and rear sections were loosely put together. It had a unique style that masked Fiat’s ordinary underpinnings with elegant coachwork.

The elegant 2300 S concept had the same 2279cc straight six engines as the 2300S. Underneath its stylish body was the familiar rectangular structure associated with the 2300S. That was the same engine that was mounted in the front engine compartment of the 2300S but was connected to a four-speed manual or automatic transmission. Pininfarina gave the 1964 Fiat 2300 S Coupé Speciale Lausanne a unique character from the boxy Fiat 2000. Lausanne’s standout attributes were connected to its elegant Pininfarina design, masking the Fiat 2300 underpinnings. It was also presented on the global stage in Geneva and Lausanne, unveiling a blend of Pininfarina flair and Fiat engineering.

3. 1968 Fiat 850 Taxi

The 1968 Fiat 850 Taxi signified Fiat’s ability to modify an existing platform to meet new requirements. The engineering chief Dante Giacosa saw fit to continue developing the 850 after the successful launch of the saloon, Coupé, Spider, and multi-seat Familiar. The development of a taxi was initiated as Giacosa identified the need for better accessibility, vision, and recognition in the context of urban cabs. His vision was to tweak out the 850’s front nose to satisfy the stricter needs of a city taxi. Giacosa collaborated with sculptor Pio Manzù to come up with a design brief that would emphasize accessibility, excellent vision, and overall recognition.

The 1968 Fiat 850 Taxi retained the standard water-cooled 34bhp four-cylinder engine as supplied with the 850. The car also had the option of the Idiomatic clutch less four-speed gearbox. Its length of just 3.2m (126in) was also ideal on the city’s tight traffic. Its power-operated sliding door allowed access to the rear seats for three passengers. The front seat could also be folded down to allow a fourth person to share the ride, which is also an excellent space-making feature. The 850 Taxi had practical flexibility and space-making solutions to offer an improved urban transportation experience while adhering to the standard 850’s compact proportions and dimensions.

4. 1969 Autobianchi A112 Runabout

The 1969 Autobianchi A112 Runabout provided a preview of the evolution in small sports-car design. The concept was first displayed on the Alfa Romeo stands at the Turin Motor Show in 1969. The Runabout’s design was completely different from the English MGs and Triumphs, as well as the Fiat 850 Spider. Marcello Gandini designed a wedge-shaped car with sharp edges, which completely opposed the established norm for small cars. The Runabout had a unique design that set it apart from Fiat’s contemporary concepts and signalled a shift in small sports-car design philosophies.

Autobianchi had joined forces with Fiat the year before, and the two-seater Runabout also had Fiat connections. In fact, it was powered by the Lampredi four-cylinder, 1116cc engine, which had recently debuted in the 128 saloons. It was not long before Fiat announced that the 128 saloons would get a Runabout-inspired sibling, which eventually became known as project X1/9. The 1969 Autobianchi A112 Runabout signified Fiat’s shift in small sports-car design philosophies, as well as a preview of the 128’s upcoming sibling.

5. 1969 Abarth 2000 Scorpione

The 1969 Abarth 2000 Scorpione was a lightweight, powerful, and extreme Pininfarina creation. It was based on the Abarth 2000 Sport prototype, and the concept was unveiled at the Belgium Motor Show in Brussels. The 2000 Sport was a legendary prototype that had been launched two years earlier. Since Fiat had acquired Abarth’s racing division two years prior, and the marque now referred to the 2000 Sport as a “Fiat Abarth.” The prototype utilized a tubular chassis and a small two-liter engine mounted at the rear. The car’s overall weight was just 670Kgs (1,477lbs).

The 2000’s engine could deliver up to 220bhp, enabling the Scorpione to achieve a breathtaking top speed of 175mph. Pininfarina’s bodywork was also unique, as a lift-up center section provided access to the driver’s seat. When the section was closed, the windshield provided a 180-degree view, as there were no A-Pillars. The 1969 Abarth 2000 Scorpione utilized Pininfarina’s exceptional craftsmanship to deliver a car with extreme lightness, enormous power, and an equally extreme Pininfarina body. The prototype’s engine and bodywork were not separate, as each played a critical role in creating the car’s unique personality.

6. 1972 Fiat X1/23

The 1972 Fiat X1/23 signified Fiat’s exploratory approach to compact city car design and development. Unveiled at the 1972 Turin Motor Show, the two-seater X1/23 was a concept car that suggested that Fiat had considered miniaturizing the Fiat 500. The company made sure to keep the details of the powerplant at the Turin Motor Show under wraps, as the car had an integrated safety cell. The prototype did not have conventional wind-down windows, meaning that the air-conditioning system had to be installed in the confined space of the cabin.

X1/23’s Forward-Looking Ideas:

Two years later, the X1/23 was converted to electric power, signifying the car’s alternative potential as a zero-emission vehicle. The prototype’s electric motor was connected to the front wheels, and it had a top speed of 45mph. Overall, it had a driving range of about 31 miles. The 1972 Fiat X1/23 signified Fiat’s interest in researching new propulsion technologies, as it transformed from a petrol-engined prototype into an emissions-free electric vehicle. It was ideal as a city car, as the top speed and range of the electric motor were sufficient for short-distance travel. It had a two-seater capacity, while the integrated safety cell and electric powertrain were ideal for urban driving.

7. 1972 Fiat ESV 1500

The 1972 Fiat ESV 1500 was part of Fiat’s interest in the United States Government’s Experimental Safety Vehicle program. It had a target weight of less than 680kgs (1,499lbs) and was a participant in the ultra-lightweight category. The concept was based on the Fiat 500, but the doors were taken from the larger and newer Fiat 126. The bodywork had extensive plastic bumpers, while the interior had a heavily padded dashboard. This was the essence of the safety concept, as the car had special features that made it fundamentally different from regular Fiat models.

ESV 1500 Safety Features:

In Fiat’s 13 cars built for the ESV program, almost all of them met a gruesome end during crash-testing. The 1972 Fiat ESV 1500 was not an easy concept to build as it had to meet the safety test requirements. It had to have a target weight of less than 680kgs (1,499lbs) and was in the ultra-lightweight category. It had extensive rubber cladding on the bodywork to provide protection, as well as thick plastic bumpers for the front and rear sections. The interior also had a heavily padded dashboard. The 1972 Fiat ESV 1500 was built on the Fiat 500 underpinnings but had 126 doors, enhanced bodywork, and a different interior, which all pointed to its safety features that were drastically different from regular Fiat models.

8. 1972 Fiat ESV 2000

The 1972 Fiat ESV 2000 signified Fiat’s participation in the Experimental Safety Vehicle program and the car maker’s approach to building a safer car. It was a competitor in the 1,000kg (2,204lbs) class, and the concept was based on the acclaimed Fiat 128 saloon. The prototype had a modified engine at the front, while the bodywork had extensive use of rubberized sections for protection. Its interior had extensive use of padded surfaces as the safety concept required. Apart from the 128 saloon’s front engine, the car had an uprated 1,3-litre engine to meet the additional weight requirements of the 1,000kg class.

ESV 2000 Engineering Highlights:

Other manufacturers that participated in the safety program also faced challenges when trying to meet the target weight requirements. Fiat’s ESV 2000 was no different, as it recorded a weight of 262kg (578lbs) over the 1,000kg (2,204lbs) threshold. It was not an easy task to modify a 128 saloon to meet the safety requirements and target weight. However, the prototype did influence later versions of the 128 family, including the Strada and Ritmo. Unlike the ESV 1500, the 1972 Fiat ESV 2000 concept’s rubberized bodywork and extensive use of padding in the interior were just some of the unique safety features. The use of an uprated 1,3-litre engine in the front engine compartment also played a role in making the ESV 2000 a valid competitor in the Experimental Safety Vehicle program.

9. 1974 Fiat ESV 2500

The 1974 Fiat ESV 2500 was the final prototype built for the Experimental Safety Vehicle program as Fiat continued to use the familiar Fiat 124 architecture. It was the first Fiat concept to utilize a front-engine rear-wheel-drive layout as a means of improving safety. The prototype still utilized the three-box design, but the tailgate at the rear could be opened to provide access to the cargo area. The 1974 Fiat ESV 2500’s body had extensive rubber cladding, which contributed to the weight of the prototype. It weighed almost twice as much as the standard Fiat 124.

ESV 2500’s Safety Innovations:

Apart from the three-box design and tailgate opening at the rear, the 1974 Fiat ESV 2500’s front-engine rear-wheel-drive layout, rubber cladding, and fuel-tank placement were all radically different from the regular Fiat 124. ESV 2500 signified Fiat’s extensive efforts in the Experimental Safety Vehicle program as it was the third concept built on the Fiat 124 platform, which saw the modification of the chassis, body structure, and engine placement to improve safety levels.

10. 1976 Fiat 126 Cavalletta

The 1976 Fiat 126 Cavalletta was the latest concept in the long line of Fiat concepts exploring different themes and technologies. The Centro Stile design team unveiled the concept truck at the 1976 Turin Motor Show. It drew inspiration from Fiat’s earlier Jolly models as the Cavalletta concept also emphasized beach-holiday practicality. The concept’s name translates to “grasshopper” in English, which was apt for the lightweight but versatile concept. The Cavalletta had its mechanical components borrowed from the Fiat 500 Giardiniera. It had twin-cylinder air-cooled engines at the rear, as well as an open design that could also fit the theme of a Jolly. The Cavalletta concept was fundamentally different from the experimental safety vehicles and performance-oriented concepts that came before it.

This clever utilization of Fiat’s versatile concept platform signified the experimental spirit of Fiat. The 1976 Fiat 126 Cavalletta was just another example that demonstrated how Fiat was willing to test unconventional ideas and think outside the box. It helped the company to embrace different themes, from gas-turbine powerplants and performance-oriented sports cars to microcars and experimental safety vehicles.
