10 Rare Ferrari Concepts That Were Too Radical to Ever Reach Production

Ferrari has established an enduring legacy by building some of the world’s most celebrated performance automobiles. While its production models regularly captivate enthusiasts, a fascinating collection of unique concept cars and experimental prototypes exists away from the normal showroom lineup. These special projects reveal Ferrari’s willingness to explore unconventional design ideas, alternative engineering solutions, and possibilities that would never become ordinary production cars.

From four-door luxury saloons and lightweight technology demonstrators to radical open-top sports cars and bespoke client creations, these rare Ferraris demonstrate how far Maranello and its Italian design partners were prepared to experiment. Each project offered a different interpretation of Ferrari performance and design. 1. Ferrari Pinin (1980)

When Ferrari introduced the Pinin at the Turin Auto Show in 1980, it represented a significant deviation from Ferrari’s sports cars. At a time when Ferrari was known for its high-performance two-door cars, the Pinin took a totally new direction and suggested that a high-class four-door luxury sedan is possible. Ferrari engineering can be adapted to an executive car because of its long and sculptured body.

The Ferrari Pinin was created to mark the 50th anniversary of the famous design house Pininfarina. A large 4.9-liter flat-12 engine was installed under the elongated hood, embodying the twelve-cylinder performance principle in the unusual form of the four-door car. Despite all the elegance and the high public attention to it, the Pinin has never been taken beyond the experimental stage.

2. Ferrari 408 4RM (1987)

The experimental Ferrari 408 4RM was developed in 1987. When rear-wheel drive was still a dominant form of propulsion for performance cars, the project was aimed to test different approaches to delivery of power and improvement of the car dynamics. Therefore, the 408 4RM was not intended for production at once but rather to test mechanical ideas and their influence on the company’s future engineering strategy.

3. Ferrari FZ93 Zagato (1993)

The FZ93 Zagato was presented at the Geneva Motor Show of 1993 as an unusual example of Ferrari engineering and Italian coachwork. Being based on the well-known Testarossa model, this project was a blend of Ferrari’s technical achievements and the rather unusual design style of Zagato. The concept did not try to improve Ferrari’s styling; it was a full-scale rethinking of a supercar’s look.

The shape had sharp edges along with a special two-tone color that made the FZ93 stand out from other Ferrari cars that were produced around that time. But reactions from both critics and fans were not that positive, and the project did not become a production car at all. The FZ93 became one of the examples of how Zagato and Maranello cooperated.

4. Ferrari GG50 (2005)

The Ferrari GG50 is the product of Giorgetto Giugiaro, who is renowned as a world-class automobile designer, who designed this model in celebration of his fiftieth year of designing cars. Unlike other Ferraris which have been developed as part of the Ferrari Production program, this model was a one-of-a-kind model and was designed as a tribute to Giugiaro’s own interpretation of the grand tourer concept of Ferrari cars.

GG50 Design Highlights:

  • Distinctive shortened fastback body

While it appeared as a custom design on the outside, the GG50 was internally exactly the same as the 612 Scaglietti grand tourer. Consequently, the one-off still carried the grand touring potential of twelve cylinders while having a completely transformed exterior. With his modification of the shape, Giugiaro reduced the total length of the vehicle and added the fastback tail. It was a unique fusion of Ferrari’s proven mechanics and grand touring design style.

5. Ferrari Millechili (2007)

The Ferrari Millechili, which made its debut in 2007, was a tech demonstrator car built to showcase lightweight car manufacturing. The term “millechili” means “one thousand kilograms.” This concept car aimed to reach the remarkable feat of being only 1,000 kilograms heavy. While more power could have been one consideration, making the car lighter was the key idea behind the project.

The seats in the cockpit were mounted on the frame of the vehicle and the steering wheel as well as pedal box could be adjusted by individual drivers.

6. Ferrari F50 Bolide (1996)

Created at the behest of the Sultan of Brunei, the Ferrari F50 Bolide exemplifies just how far Ferrari would go to accommodate the demands of exclusive customers. The vehicle was not an F50 with slight modifications to the aesthetics but rather a special model that was significantly transformed aesthetically. It was an odd union of Ferrari engineering prowess and custom coachbuilding.

F50 Bolide Custom Features:

  • Retained F1-derived V12
  • Used original chassis foundation
  • Produced in tiny numbers

The F50 Bolide kept the same engine and chassis design as the standard car, maintaining the mechanics related to the F1-based V12 engine of the regular version of the vehicle. But the exterior design of the car had been changed with the totally reengineered monocoque body design, which made the car look very different from other F50s. There were only a few of these cars manufactured, and this made them extremely rare.

7. Ferrari Rossa by Pininfarina (2000)

The Rossa concept was first unveiled by Ferrari at the Turin Motor Show in 2000 as a way of celebrating the 70th birthday of the automobile designing company, Pininfarina. It was a roadster that featured some distinct characteristics of the Ferrari race cars, the barchettas in particular, as Ferrari wanted to celebrate its rich history of racing through the Rossa.

The Rossa incorporated a shortened windscreen and door windows that wrapped around to form an unmistakable silhouette. While this car concept did not go into mass production, the styling cues of this car would find their way into future Ferrari models. Hence, the Rossa was not only a testament to the partnership of Pininfarina and Ferrari but also a study in design.

8. Ferrari 599 HY-KERS (2010)

Ferrari’s HY-KERS was its first step towards hybrid technology development. The car was presented at the Geneva Motor Show, and it showed how Ferrari would be able to introduce electrification technology to its GT line without losing the performance spirit that made Ferrari cars unique. Unlike other projects which saw hybrid technology as nothing more than a means of increasing efficiency, this project looked at the possibility of adding electricity to an already powerful engine.

HY-KERS Hybrid Technology:

The setup consisted of the compact electric motor together with the usual V12 engine that is positioned at the front. Even though the experimental 599 model did not go into production, the research was very useful for future projects.

9. Ferrari SP12 EC (2012)

The Ferrari SP12 EC came to be developed via the special projects of the Ferrari company, as a bespoke sports car that was designed especially for the famous musician, Eric Clapton. In particular, the project was associated with the passion of Eric Clapton for Ferraris and the inspiration from the Ferrari 512 BB which Clapton owned three times throughout the 1970s.

The modified body styling featured obvious retro-style influences from the 512 BB, with features like a front grill, side strakes, and rear fascia making up an integral part of the design. With such styling elements in use, the SP12 EC made it very clear that there were obvious influences from the past in terms of Ferrari designs despite the contemporary mechanicals under its skin. The car was a true masterpiece of a customized Ferrari that showcased just how a passion for cars could be turned into a car itself.

10. Ferrari F12 TRS (2014)

Ferrari F12 TRS is yet another example of the extreme car which has been built by the Ferrari Special Projects department. The idea behind the car is to pay tribute to the legendary Ferrari 250 Testa Rossa, by adopting the mechanical platform of F12 Berlinetta and giving a modern-day interpretation to the racing proportions of the classic barchetta. The car does not have any practical use at all; its sole aim is customization.

F12 TRS Performance Design:

  • Retained 6.3-liter V12 engine

Its design was marked by an extreme open-top layout along with aggressive styling and body sculpturing. In spite of being a roadster with minimal body components, it still incorporated the same 6.3-liter V12 engine of the regular F12 Berlinetta, thus making sure that its impressive looks were backed by the performance-oriented design legacy of the Ferrari cars. Another unique Ferrari car had been created through a blend of heritage and engineering.
