Ford Recalls Nearly 150,000 Mustangs Over Wiring Harness Defect

Federal regulators and Ford Motor Company have announced a massive safety recall covering approximately 150,000 Ford Mustang vehicles nationwide in the US. According to the formal recall notice, over 148,663 Mustang cars from the 2024, 2025, and 2026 model years were involved due to a possible issue that could affect the electrical properties within the wiring harness assembly in the engine compartment of the vehicle. Owners and Ford performance enthusiasts were asked to familiarize themselves with the problems, potential symptoms when operating the vehicle, and the solution Ford intends to bring to the table for the owner.

The recall, officially logged by NHTSA (the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration), involves fatigue cracks within an electrical grounding system. NHTSA says the grounded connection could break with no warning, resulting in a potential immediate shutdown while driving. However, several other necessary systems can fail concurrently as well. This brings a number of potential safety issues to Mustang owners.

The source of the problem has been found and verified in the manufacturing procedures for engine compartment wiring harness ground connections. The adhesive for adhesive-lined heat-shrink tubing could be inadvertently applied and dripped onto metal eyelets during production assembly. Any stray adhesive upon solidifying formed an uneven surface in which the electrical ground terminals could not mount flush.

1. How the Ground Terminal Problem Developed

The cured adhesive kept the metal terminals from pressing tightly down on the engine surface and being firmly tightened with the assembly bolts. On a production basis, when tightening these assembly bolts, the metal terminals had to press down onto and against the hardened adhesive, causing permanent stress at these metal terminals which subsequently made them prone to cracking in normal use of the vehicle.

How the Terminal Defect Creates Risk:

  • Hardened adhesive blocked proper eyelet contact
  • Assembly bolts forced terminals to bend
  • Metal terminals developed permanent stress points
  • Engine vibration increased fatigue fracture risks
  • Cracked terminals interrupted important electrical circuits

Engine vibration might put more strain on already weakened connections such as this. Repeated movement and vibration would eventually lead to one of the ground eyelet terminals to fracture due to fatigue. When the terminal fractures, the ground circuit would break for that specific ground path and could stop one or more vehicle components from functioning.

This isn’t just a loose electrical connection issue though. It’s not just the cured adhesive, the interference on mounting, the in/out of plane bending loads. It’s about failure to the metal structure of the eyelet itself in this area and this recollection taken by Ford is in response to removing the flawed hardware in favor of upgraded hardware to make better and stronger ground connections.

2. Loss of Drive Power Creates a Serious Safety Risk

One of the most significant possible consequences of a fractured ground terminal is a loss of motive power. Depending on which electrical ground connection fails, the Mustang could suddenly lose the ability to maintain propulsion while driving. This situation can become especially dangerous on highways, busy roads, or in traffic where surrounding vehicles are traveling at higher speeds.

Federal safety officials identified this as one of the primary reasons the recall was necessary.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has emphasized that losing motive power while driving can significantly increase the risk of a crash. Therefore, the issue requires serious attention from affected vehicle owners. Ford estimates that only a relatively small percentage of the recalled vehicles may actually contain the manufacturing defect. However, the potential safety risk remains important because the condition could lead to an unexpected loss of vehicle power while driving.

3. Headlight Failures Could Reduce Road Visibility

The electrical defect can also affect the Mustang’s headlight operation, creating additional safety concerns for drivers. Depending on which ground eyelet develops a fracture, the vehicle could lose the right headlamp, left headlamp, or another related electrical function. A lighting failure can significantly reduce visibility and create an immediate safety risk, especially when driving at night, in poor weather, or under other low-visibility conditions.

Reduced forward visibility can make it more difficult for drivers to identify obstacles, changing traffic conditions, pedestrians, and unexpected changes in the roadway. The issue can also reduce how visible the Mustang is to other motorists, creating an additional safety concern. This increases the possibility of a dangerous traffic situation, particularly when the vehicle is traveling on dark, poorly illuminated, or low-visibility roads.

Federal safety documentation highlighted both sides of this visibility concern. An inoperable headlamp may reduce the driver’s ability to see the road while also making the vehicle harder for other motorists to notice. Because lighting plays such an important role in overall road safety, a ground terminal failure affecting the headlamps represents a significant part of the recall’s risk assessment.

4. Windshield Washer Failure Can Affect Driver Visibility

The windshield washer system is also electrically tied into the involved electrical ground system. Since these systems remove dirt, roadsalt, mud, sprayed water, etc. From the windshield it is an integral part to clear driving visibility. When an electrical ground source feeding the washer fluid pump fails, the entire washer system can become completely inoperative. In such a situation, maintaining visibility can be significantly less convenient.

Washer Failure Can Reduce Visibility:

  • Ground failure may disable washer pumps
  • Debris can quickly block windshields
  • Poor weather increases visibility difficulties significantly
  • Drivers may struggle clearing road grime
  • Inoperable washers increase potential crash risks

This situation can seriously affect a driver especially when driving during bad weather and or if they are driving on dirt/ spray covered roads that would cover the windscreen extremely quickly. Without the use of washer fluid this situation may leave you with the inability to see. You wouldn’t think so but an amount of muck buildup such as this can and will cover the windscreen greatly.

Regulators warned of the specific safety issue that the lack of a functional windshield washer means there’s a greater chance of a crash. This one possibility highlights where a loss of one electrical ground contact can have a great effect on systems in a vehicle in addition to, for example, movement and lights. Good circuit continuity through these ground lines is necessary for many vehicle components.

5. Cooling and Air Conditioning Systems May Also Be Affected

This type of broken ground terminal failure would also lead to significant vehicle thermal management systems failures. Engine cooling fan failures such as a ground terminal would mean that it could be impossible for the Mustang to adequately cool the engine and as the miles rolled on or under load increased. Failure to keep adequate temperatures within a reasonable window would cause other mechanical issues likely dependent upon how and how long the vehicle is driven.

Thermal Systems May Experience Electrical Failures:

  • Cooling fans may stop operating properly
  • Engine temperatures could become harder controlled
  • Air conditioning systems may also fail
  • Elevated temperatures can reduce driver comfort
  • Different terminals affect different vehicle systems

It is also possible for this connection loss to affect the air conditioning system in the passenger compartment of the cabin. Although the loss of cabin air conditioning will not create an immediate hazard in relation to the ability to operate the drive components or see the road such as loss of drive or headlights, it would however create a loss of driving comfort. This can have a greater bearing for the driver and occupants during high temperature periods of the year.

Together, these potential faults illustrate just how far-reaching a faulty electrical ground connection can be. The eyelets in question form part of a vital electrical circuit and serve many systems on a Mustang and, as multiple functions are powered through this circuit, any failure at a single point can be reflected with various symptomatology depending on which specific terminal has failed. Hence different vehicles exhibiting symptoms resulting from the same faulty item.

6. Warning Lights and Alerts May Provide Early Notice

Some of the newest Mustang has diagnostic systems to warn you of problems concerning your electrical system either before the main components fail or while in service. Certain changes in electrical resistance, or poor/unstable ground conditions will cause a light or alarm to indicate, that may also show up on your instrument display. Knowing how to tell if one of these alerts has been issued may warn you that you have an electrical fault condition within your new Mustang, and it’s time to have the car serviced by a qualified mechanic.

Warning Signs May Indicate Electrical Problems:

  • Check Engine Light may become illuminated
  • Audible chimes may alert vehicle drivers

Based on Federal recall documentation, depending upon which ground eyelet is involved, the telltale signs may vary. The driver might encounter an illuminated Check Engine light, as well as potential telltale messages within the instrument cluster as the vehicle is being operated, or even a chime sound from the electrical system. Any of the above could inform the driver that attention is needed to the vehicle.

For owners who notice any of these occurrences in a Mustang they own or drive they should consider the indicator a stern warning and visit a dealer for proper repair guidance. The warning doesn’t necessarily mean that the specific car was built with the incorrect ground eyelet but it does mean the car has likely an electrical problem of some sort which is needed for an investigation and will help to stop a burgeoning fault becoming a complete failure of an operating system if dealt with in time.

7. Ford Estimates Only a Small Percentage May Be Defective

While this campaign has a significant number of cars affected by the campaign, Ford thinks only 1 percent of those 148,663 Mustangs might have the adhesive-related problem with its wiring. In question are Mustangs made between September 7, 2022 and June 9, 2026; even though not all of those have the same defect, the electrically-charged ones cause dangerous electrical and possibly safety related issues that Ford wants people to know about.

Recall Covers Vehicles Beyond Known Defects:

  • Recall includes 148,663 Mustang vehicles nationwide

As of August 4, 2006, while reviewing worldwide field data through Ford, it determined there were eight warranty claims relating to ground eyelet failure in world markets. Four of these reported claims came within the first three months after the vehicle was in service. This afforded engineers vital information about the ground eyelet failure. This provided engineers with a perspective on how the electrical issue would materialize and correlate to electrical connections.

After Ford’s Field Review Committee had reviewed such concerns on the 18 of August 2006; Ford has determined to conduct a field action for correction of such concerns in the potential affected customer universe. Ford determined that recalling every vehicle that falls under the specified manufacturing date range would let Ford correct the concern even if only a small portion of vehicles are estimated to be having the real fault.

8. No Reported Crashes or Injuries Were Linked to the Issue

With regard to the grounding eyelet concern, Ford stated there have been zero VOCs, 0 reported crashes, and 0 reported personal injuries when the recall was implemented. Thus it can be concluded that the recall was implemented before Ford became aware of the actual occurrence of the defect being involved with a reported accident and the presence of 0 reported crashes indicate that the actual danger associated with the defect may have not yet manifested itself before Ford and regulatory bodies became aware of it.

Recall Began Before Reported Safety Incidents:

  • No crashes were linked to defect
  • No personal injuries had been reported
  • No owner questionnaires identified related incidents
  • Potential failures still created serious risks
  • Ford acted before additional problems developed

Although there are no documented injuries or accidents reported, safety concerns for this defect still exist. Federal authorities and Ford documented some specific functions that can be compromised by loss of this electrical ground connection: vehicle motive power, headlights, wind shield washer, AC, and the cooling fan. Should this component fail while a driver is operating a Mustang, it could prove to be problematic depending on the environment and situation.

By issuing the recall before the problem had been identified with any actual crashes or injuries, Ford is doing all it can to prevent an even more dangerous situation or liability. The recall notice says that Ford has identified the failure on those ground connections. The company said it initiated the recall effort to prevent continued and abnormal stress to the affected ground connections while vehicle use and engine vibration continues over time which could eventually cause fatigue fractures and possible related electrical failures.

9. Ford Will Replace the Ground Terminals Free of Charge

The authorized Ford dealer will perform the necessary repairs to the affected vehicles free of charge to the owner. The procedure involves replacement of all four original factory ground eyelet terminals, which are located in the engine compartment. The original terminals will be replaced with the revised service hardware, which is intended to fix the structural deficiency in the original components to create a stronger ground and avoid future failure during vehicle operation.

Revised Hardware Will Replace Original Terminals:

  • Dealers will complete repairs without charge
  • Four factory terminals require replacement service
  • Revised pigtails eliminate mounting interference issues
  • Updated geometry improves terminal durability significantly
  • Repairs address vibration-related fatigue concerns directly

According to the approved repair procedure, new revised standoff eyelet pigtails are to be installed to rectify the issues that exist within the original terminal. These parts will prevent clamp-up interference from compromising the connection, while also minimising stress induced by the off axis bending to which the original connection was subjected to in a manner to cause the fatigue problem. The replacement parts should solve these problems and hold a robust ground connection during normal operation of the vehicle.

New hardware used by Ford utilizes a new stepped-neck terminal geometry design. The new design is intended to offer a higher durability under vehicle vibration and engine movements. If a technician is to replace all four ground terminals in question they should ensure that those specific grounds are up to spec with what has been engineered under this recall remedy.

10. Owners Can Check Their Recall Status and Prepare for Repairs

Ford informed its dealerships of the pending recall, which has identification number 26C40, by way of an August 28, 2006 notice. Dealerships can now prepare their service departments for service requests and those having access to the Ford and US governments databases for vehicle identification numbers may now find if the particular vehicle they’re responsible for is part of recall 26C40.

Owners Can Prepare for Free Repairs:

  • Dealers received recall information before notifications
  • VIN searches identify affected Mustang vehicles
  • Interim letters informed registered vehicle owners
  • Permanent repairs expected during early 2027
  • Owners should monitor recall notifications carefully

Owners that registered their vehicle were sent interim notifications between August 31 and September 4, 2006, describing the defect to alert and inform registered owners of the pending concern. While registered owners will be notified about the concern at that time, permanent remedy to correct the problem and new redesigned parts are not anticipated to be broadly available immediately. The complete recall remedy is anticipated in Q1 2007, with total recall remedy and design replacement parts anticipated to be available through March 2007.
