Get your seatbelt on, we are about to traverse the roads of America. You have experienced that emotion when you are driving along, and somebody does not follow the road rules?

First, let’s talk numbers. More than 37,000 Americans die in traffic-related accidents each year, as well as 2.35 million injured or disabled. The financial implication of this is astounding, with the U.S spending approximately 230.6 billion a year or 820 per person. These figures are a great amount of human sufferings and serious health epidemic. According to the NHTSA, motor vehicle traffic crash deaths are estimated to be 8,110 in the first quarter of 2019.

Traffic deaths are caused by distracted driving which involves cell phones and drunk driving. More than 50 percent of car accidents involve speeding and aggressive drivers. Road rage is evident in 64 out of every 100 drivers and 51 out of every 100 drivers confesses to speeding. Such a mixture of impatience, rule breaking and aggression will form a toxic road environment. The most dangerous drivers are teen drivers because they are more inexperienced and more prone to risky behavior, whereas the elder drivers are physically and cognitively challenged, such as hearing impairment or mental deterioration.

We will jump into the cities where driving could cause you to pull your hair out our list of the Top 15 Cities with the Worst Drivers in the US report.

Soaring car insurance rates are found in Hartford, Connecticut, which is 15th. According to Quadrant Information Services data, the car insurance rates in Connecticut and its cities increased by 58 percent in 2023. The growth is mainly attributed to the fact that there is a growing threat of accidents in the crowded places such as Hartford.

Look at the statistics: in 2022, there were 3,662 crashes and 10 deaths in the first 10 months of the year in Hartford. These accidents can be said to be as a result of poor driving in the city. The congested urbanism and undesirable driving habits make the streets of Hartford a difficult and risky place to be.

The residents and commuters are at a greater risk of accidents and massive increase in insurance premiums. This brings out the direct relationship between personal finance and driving habits.

14. Oklahoma City, Oklahoma

Perched at number 14 is Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. In a 2023 study on the worst drivers by state, Forbes ranked Oklahoma 4th. The capital city is also creating ripples in the wrong direction as far as driving safety is concerned.

In 2021, Oklahoma City had 23 deaths in 83 fatal accidents with 153 vehicles. These statistics paint a darker picture on how serious and common crashes are on its roads, which frequently involve more than one vehicle and lead to the loss of life.

Although the context does not determine the contributing factors to these numbers in Oklahoma City, the statewide ranking indicates difficult driving conditions or practices. Defensive driving is vital to people who have to navigate a vast road system in the city with the understanding of these dangers.

Unfortunately, Kansas City, the biggest city in the Show-Me State exhibits serious traffic problems. The large population increases the number of cars, the number of commutes and the possibility of accidents.

In August 2022, Kansas City reported a 25% increase in traffic deaths over the last year, which is worrying as far as road safety is concerned.

The traffic crash statistics in Kansas City are worrying this year. As of Fourth of July, 390 crashes had taken place causing 8 deaths. These statistics show how much danger drivers find themselves in everyday and how defensive driving skills and better awareness should be considered in order to navigate the busy streets of KCMO.

12. Nashville, Tennessee

Let’s head to Nashville, Tennessee, the city of good music and not good roads. The mean cost of car insurance in the US started to increase more than a decade ago, and Tennessee, as well as Nashville, did not go through the wave.

This was pushed by the fact that there were more claims and rising cost of claims. Full coverage car premiums in Nashville will cost approximately 913 per year. GEICO has a little lower cost of $894 and USAA is higher at 954.

The answer is simple: with increased accidents, insurers have to take more risks, which translate to increased premiums by drivers. When you are listening to music in Music City, you may be spending on music but be very careful and shop around to get insurance bargains to ensure your money is not spent out of control.

11. Sacramento, California

Sacramento, California, has been ranked among the worst drivers in California because of the notorious cases such as DUI and distracted driving.

The Transportation Injury Mapping System indicates that in 2021 to 2022, 11.8 percent of all crashes in Sacramento were caused by DUIs. This is a disturbing statistic that demonstrates how common impaired driving is and how it could be avoided.

The 2021 death toll was a tragic 70, which happened across 115 vehicles. Such statistics are lives that are permanently altered and the immediate necessity to be on the lookout on the roads of Sacramento. Responsible driving is a lifetime affair.

Detroit, once synonymous with the car is now headlining on problematic driving. Consumer Affairs placed Detroit at position 7 out of 20 cities in the US that had the worst drivers.

9. New Orleans, Louisiana

New Orleans, the city of festivals, had one of the deadliest years of drivers in more than ten years in 2021.

We are drifting into number 9, and we are in the colorful, usually turbulent New Orleans streets, Louisiana. Although it is a festive period, a 2021 report showed an ugly truth: it was one of the worst years in history in which drivers died.

According to the Louisiana Highway Safety Commission, 69 fatalities were reported in the city because of car accidents, which is a 25% rise compared to 2020. The Transportation Safety Dashboard of New Orleans indicated a shocking 32 percent rise in deaths in 2020-21.

These statistics point out serious difficulties faced by motorists in New Orleans such as unusual street patterns, tourist traffic, and bad driving habits. They require all the drivers to be cautious and safe.

8. Atlanta, Georgia

In this journey of the worst drivers, we get to Atlanta, Georgia. This is a large city with a population of more than 498,000 people and is always associated with traffic congestion. High traffic, as we have learned, is associated with increase in car accidents.

These statistics are backed up by the fact that in 2019, Atlanta registered 34,446 crashes, which is considerably reduced to 21,478 in 2020, partly because the city was under lockdown.

Although there is a temporary downward trend, the grim view of Atlanta still remains, and it made it to our list. The large number of people and the heavy traffic requires additional attention and readiness of drivers. Sadly, such hecticness usually results in worse-driving conditions.

7. Riverside, California

The city of Riverside, California, an inland empire city, unfortunately, does not live up to its name as far as driving issues are concerned. In 2018, it registered an unbelievable number of 15,359 car accident victims.

Louisville, the city of horse racing and bourbon, unfortunately, is also the city with one of the highest crash rates in the country. The Kentucky State Police reported over 12,000 crashes in the city in 2022, which resulted in more than 100 deaths and thousands of injuries.

These disturbing statistics are contributed significantly by heavy traffic on I-64, I-65, and I-71 and distracted driving. The insurance companies have taken notice and Louisville premiums are almost 20 percent above the state average.

Both interstate trucking and dense urban commuting are a challenge to drivers here. Defensive driving and alertness is a prerequisite to survival on the roads of Derby City.

4. Orlando, Florida

Orlando, the place where Disney world and Universal studios are located is also the place where crazy roads are. The fourth-worse driving city is Orlando, which is full of tourists and has some of the highest uninsured driver rates in the state.

More than 200 deaths related to traffic were registered in Orange County in 2021, with most of them being caused by speeding and impaired driving. Orlando is also ranked as one of the highest hit-and-run rates in Florida Highway Patrol.

The insurance rates are also infamously high here, at an average of 3,000 a year with full coverage due to the mix of local drivers and temporary visitors who are not used to the roads.

3. Dallas, Texas

Dallas, which is the center of the DFW Metroplex, is always ranked among the worst drivers. According to TxDOT, in 2022 alone, the city had more than 25,000 crashes with 228 fatal accidents.

The extensive road network, ongoing construction and the reputation of aggressive driving all add to these figures. Dallas motorists are also among the highest in the country in road rage cases.

The risk is reflected in the premiums: the median Dallas driver spends approximately 2800 a year, which is significantly higher than the state average. Dallas roads are not for the weak-hearted with its mixture of speed, size, and stress.

2. Los Angeles, California

Hollywood glamour may be the main attraction of the City of Angels, but its traffic is notorious in every way. Congestion, road rage, and distracted driving are the order of the day with over 7.7 million registered vehicles in Los Angeles County.

LAPD counted more than 300 traffic deaths in 2022, the most in 20 years. Drunk driving and speeding are still among the top causes, and California in general is a victim of uninsured drivers.

The annual car insurance premium in Los Angeles is more than 3,500 on average, which is partly attributed to the sheer number of claims. To the Angelenos, it is a given that one will get stuck on the 405 or the 101 and anticipate delays, danger, and increased costs.

1. St. Louis, Missouri

First on the list is St. Louis, Missouri, which has acquired national fame in unsafe driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reports that St. Louis has one of the highest per-capita fatal crash rates in the U.S.–over 180 deaths in 2021.

The city is particularly dangerous because of aggressive driving, excessive speeding, and a large number of uninsured motorists. Indeed, the number of uninsured drivers in St. Louis is estimated at almost 20 percent, which is significantly higher than the national one.

Premiums are also high here, as the average premiums are as high as 3,600 per year. Urban congestion, irresponsible behavior, and lax regulations make St. Louis roads a dangerous place to even the most responsible drivers.

Stay Aware, Drive Safe

The roads in America, between Hartford to St. Louis, tell us how unsafe- and expensive- bad driving habits are. Whereas certain cities have a problem with tourist traffic, others have problems with aggressive drivers, distracted drivers, or bad infrastructure. The moral of the story, regardless of where you are driving, is that being alert, defensive driving and making intelligent insurance decisions are the best bets to keep you safe and your wallet intact.
