The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado is reported to undergo a significant change that could completely transform its exterior styling, interior tech, and powertrain options while still maintaining the tough personality that has kept this full-size pickup strong. While patent images indicate several potential design changes including split headlights, a prominent upright grille, squared-off wheel arches, redesigned taillights, and a new exhaust system layout, other potential updates could include a tailgate change and a concept car picture indicates a large full-width digital dashboard that could elevate the interior of this pickup. Meanwhile, GM is also said to be developing new hybrid-ready V8 engines alongside transmission improvements for efficiency, power, and longevity.
Perhaps the biggest questions for truck customers are what will these upcoming changes mean for everyday usability, to the towing capacity, off-road capability, and driving feel. The return of Trail Boss and ZR2 versions would keep the Silverado dominant among those who spend time off the pavement, while a reconfigured tailgate and revised exhaust direction could impact box access and extreme driving feel. GM’s new construction plans suggest big mechanical upgrades, but the accurate power figures, torque, and final powertrain details will need to be announced. Because patent applications and spy shots are no indication of what makes it into production, consumers will have to wait for GM to say what Silverado changes will make it to the dealer, and here’s what is worth looking out for.

1. Fifth-Generation Silverado Patent Filing Reveals a Major Redesign
The all-new fifth-generation 2027 Chevrolet Silverado will have a major impact on one of the best-selling full-size pickups in America. A patent filing at the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) provides an early glimpse of the model. D1,104,864: Utility vehicle Pick-up truck filed 08/12/24, and allowed 12/09/25 The patent was discovered by automotive enthusiasts at Car and Driver, who recognized the document. The current fourth-generation Silverado, which debuted in 2018 and went on sale as a 2019 model, Chevrolet warned that patent filings don’t always relate to a future product but the drawings are very similar to a number of heavily camouflaged test mules that were seen on public roads.
What the Patent Drawings Reveal:
- Fifth-generation Silverado redesign takes shape
- Patent filed in August 2024
- USPTO approval granted in December 2025
- Current generation dates to 2019
- Prototype sightings support design speculation
Chevrolet on December 17, 2025, published a statement announcing that General Motors regularly applies for patents to protect intellectual property, trademarks and developments. GM has not responded to speculation about a new product. However, the patent sketches seem to indicate a gradual change that preserves the Silverado’s dominant height and size of the pickup while updating the front and rear styling. These elements are in line with what we see with GM’s modern design language. The patent image does not show the Silverado as its headliner, but it is easy to confuse this design as the upcoming vehicle. We will wait for the official reveal to see which patent features make it into production.

2. Redesigned Front End Introduces Split Headlights and a Bold Grille
The patent drawings suggest the next Silverado will have a fairly extensive front-end refresh. A split-headlight setup is depicted similar to the last couple of Silverado headlight designs. A thin LED strip serves as a marker light as well as a turn indicator above, while a separate lower housing contains the main headlight assembly, which is surrounded by an LED running light that takes a “C” shape, another design feature seen on the most recent versions of the Chevrolet Tahoe, Suburban and Heavy Duty trucks. The grille is tall and squared-off to give the next Silverado a muscular stance. The front bumper has a layout similar to the current truck, but with more defined, aggressive-looking planes.
A Sharper Face with Distinctive Lighting:
- Split headlights return to the Silverado
- Upper LED strip integrates turn signals
- C-shaped running lights frame headlights
- Tall grille retains its imposing appearance
- Chevrolet bowtie sits on the crossbar
The lower front fascia has wide-set fog lights and inset recovery tow hooks. A radar sensor in the center of the lower grille supports the adaptive cruise control system. Depending on which state you live in, you may need to consider mounting brackets for front license plates if they’re ever required in your area since the sensor may affect your mounting options. The hood itself looks more sculpted with a pair of separate outer humps and a low-lying middle section giving a bulge appearance to add a strength and muscle look. Restyled front fenders have boldly penned lines that slide into the bodywork of the sidewalls to make the truck look more angular and sporty, yet still retain the same big rugged look.

3. Squared Wheel Arches and Subtle Side Profile Changes
Based on the patent drawing it does look like the 2027 Silverado will keep most of the current cab structure, at least in terms of side profiles and general dimensions. Based on side glass and length of the rear door we don’t expect the crew cab to lose any interior space, though nothing is official until the final production specs are released. What does look new is a small built-in lip spoiler on the top back edge of the cab roof line to funnel airflow over the bed. We don’t see the off-center shark-fin antenna featured on current trucks in the patents, but that doesn’t mean it’s gone, as sometimes government illustrations omit minor bits. The biggest change to the truck’s profile is the likely return of the flat-top wheel arch, after the T10 redesign (what the truck is today) moved the wheel arches to the fully circular design.
A More Angular and Rugged Side Profile:
- Crew cab proportions appear familiar
- Integrated roofline lip spoiler appears
- Flat-top wheel arches return
- Squared openings create a rugged appearance
- Shark-fin antenna status remains uncertain
Although the last few Silverado generations have used rectangular wheel arches, the first few had flatter, squarer cutouts, until GM revised the openings to become more rounded with the arrival of the 2019 Silverado. For now, it looks like Chevrolet could be heading back down the cubed wheel well route, based on the patent sketches and computer renderings. The squared-off openings add a boxier look to the side bodywork and surround the wheels with a trim border with defined edges that add sharp definition around the wheel openings. This quick body change could help to set the new truck apart from its predecessor without deviating too far from its traditional shape, but we’ll have to wait for the camo to come off. This roofline spoiler and wheel-arch shape are some of the details that could mark out the fifth-generation Silverado.

4. Rear Styling Updates and a Potentially Revised Multi-Flex Tailgate
Ahead of launch, the next-generation Silverado’s rear end seems to have divided styling cues from traditional internal-combustion trucks and Silverado EVs. Patent images reveal wider, shorter taillights that are shaped with upper edges that extend forward into the rear quarter panels. The three-character Silverado badge is flanked by standard integrated corner steps at the outer corners of the rear bumper for easy access to the bed, while an expansive trim strip continues across the middle of the tailgate to create a defining horizontal line on the rear of the truck. Silverado owners will recognize the subtle updates that give the truck a fresh look without sacrificing the functionality of earlier trucks.
Tailgate and Rear-End Design Changes:
- Wider and shorter taillights appear
- Integrated rear corner steps remain
- Broad trim spans the tailgate
- Split-folding tailgate design may change
- Silverado EV styling influences rear details
The tailgate could also see a functional change. GM’s patented Multi-Flex tailgate debuted on the GMC Sierra after Chevrolet revealed its own Multi-Pro tailgate on the 2019 Sierra. These latest patent drawings depict a line across the width of the tailgate, positioned directly where the upper tailgate split normal on the current Multi-Flex tailgate. The structural features imply that the complex exterior tailgate operation could be replaced by a more straightforward 50/50 split. The change to a simpler layout may change the way owners use the bed when loading cargo, however, the patent diagrams alone do not prove that GM plans to follow through on the new patent by adopting a 50/50 arrangement, or that it will get rid of the Multi-Flex altogether. Ultimately, the production model will prove which features GM values more.

5. Revised Exhaust Layout Could Improve Practical Clearance
There’s another big change to the exhaust layout in the rear bumper area. Patent images of Silverado prototypes show the rectangular HDMI port-style exhaust tips that fill the bumper cutouts have gone missing. It’s likely production will follow other GM models in offering dual- and quad-exit exhaust options, as seen on the 2025 GMC Yukon. The new outlet design appears to place angled square holes high in the rear bumper in a different packaging configuration. It is likely it will be tucked closer to the lower fascia versus making more of a prominent appearance in the bumper.
Higher Exhaust Outlets for Truck Utility:
- Rectangular exhaust tips appear discontinued
- Dual and quad outlets are expected
- Square-shaped exhaust tips create a sharper look
- Outlets sit higher beneath the bumper
- Revised placement may improve departure angles
Moving the exhaust outlets further up into the lower fascia could help retain departure angles on the trail and while towing. Since the new full-size pickup will be used as a daily driver and workhorse truck, hanging the outlets down low and revealing them on the sides or rear might not be the best idea. The exits incorporated in the patent are based on the styling on the GMC Yukon, indicating a common design theme for trucks and SUVs from GM. Unfortunately, it isn’t certain if all of the six Patent images depict any of the six available configurations on every Silverado trim level.

6. Interior Spy Photos Suggest a Large Continuous Digital Display
While the USPTO patent filing focuses on exterior bodywork, early spy shots indicate the interior will tell us something about the vehicles next-generation interior, as well. The test vehicles seen in March appear to be sporting a large digital screen that runs from behind the steering wheel out to the middle of the dashboard. That type of sweeping display layout is similar to the 33.0-inch display that runs through all of Cadillac’s current lineup. If Chevrolet decides to use that setup in the production Silverado, it could replace the infotainment-focused display currently set in different housing on the dashboard with the new, continuous digital display layout seen in the prototype.
A More Modern Digital Cabin:
- Large continuous display spotted in prototypes
- Screen extends behind the steering wheel
- Dashboard display reaches toward the center
- Layout resembles Cadillac’s 33-inch screen
- Production adoption remains unconfirmed
A running display may give the Silverado’s interior a more modern look and feel while integrating digital information as a more integral aspect of the design of the dash. Such a layout would help integrate the instrument display with the key infotainment screen located at the center of the dash, rather than keep them separated in their own dedicated spaces. The spy shots, though, don’t give us the size of the ultimate display, or the software features it may include, or if every trim level will have it. The 33.0-inch Cadillac display is there to show us the look, not necessarily to reveal the Chevrolet Silverado’s eventual hardware spec. The patent drawings themselves don’t show the interior of the machine, so these comments are based on first-hand usage of the prototype and not the patent, per se.

7. New Hybrid-Ready V8 Engines and Transmission Improvements
With the teaser image of the next-generation Silverado, we also get a list of Powertrain technology to expect. GM will be keeping the 2.7L Turbo High Output four-cylinder and 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel inline-six with some minor updates. The naturally aspirated 5.3L and 6.2L V8s are expected to be discontinued and two small-block V8s will replace them one of which is planned for the 2027-2032 emissions deadline. GM announced it is spending $888 million in its NY engine plant to support the new engine design in the next generation V8s. These new engines are expected to be hybrid or plug-in hybrid.
Powertrain Changes Target Performance and Efficiency:
- 2.7-liter Turbo engine is expected to continue
- 3.0-liter Duramax diesel carries over
- Existing 5.3-liter V8 is being phased out
- Existing 6.2-liter V8 is being phased out
- New V8s are planned with hybrid technology
The all-new Silverado will not only look fresh, but it will also have significant powertrain updates. As per the information provided, General Motors is going to keep the 2.7-liter Turbo High Output 4-cylinder and 3.0-liter Duramax turbocharged 6-cylinder inline engines with minor updates. It is expecting to put off 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter naturally aspirated V8s engines. Instead, it will replace it with two small-block V8s engines with development done in accordance with the 2027-2032 tighter emissions standards. The $888 million investment in the New York engine plant marks next-generation V8 program will feature hybrid/plug-in hybrid technology for the new engines.

8. Trail Boss and ZR2 Maintain the Silverado’s Off-Road Focus
The upcoming Silverado will, similar to today’s model, maintain a dual line-up of basic work trucks and high-end luxury and family haulers, as well as a dedicated off-road model. Trail Boss and high-performance ZR2 test prototypes have been apparently spotted testing with heavy camouflage. Based on the patent images, renderings appear to show that the Trail Boss will have black-painted front grille and fog lamp surrounds, dark-colored protective wheel-arch cladding, off-road suspension with special shocks, and large off-road wheels and tires. This is not a departure from the current Trail Boss model, which retains the same proportions, however, this off-road version retains basic full-size pickup proportions and capability. The ZR2 is also expected to be back.
Off-Road Trims Retain Their Rugged Character:
- Trail Boss prototypes spotted during testing
- ZR2 testing has also been observed
- Black-painted grille distinguishes Trail Boss
- Protective wheel-arch cladding adds rugged styling
- Larger all-terrain tires support off-road use
The information provided here predicts a staggered launch for the next-generation Silverado family from Chevrolet. According to the information provided, the 2027 Silverado 1500 Trail Boss and other core models could launch in spring 2026, with dealership arrivals in fall 2026. GM is likely to sell more profitable trims first with ZR2 off-road trims and High Country trims arriving first and work-truck versions following later. All of this is a prediction and GM may decide to deliver initial trims first and potentially mix variations in a different order. The timing information above is likely a prediction.

9. Updated Exterior Design Blends Traditional Truck Styling with Modern Details
The patent sketches imply a relatively evolutionary update rather than a major smaking out of the Silverado’s current design language. The upright grille, broad stance, familiar Chevrolet bowtie, split headlights, and prismatic bumper surfacing are still there, but a more modern look is achieved by sharper bodywork, flat-top wheel arches, sculpted hood corners, and optional fender vents. New taillights and revised exhaust outlets would continue the new Silverado’s design language into its rear end, and various details, such as the integrated cab spoiler and suggested tailgate modifications, imply this isn’t just a quick nose lift. Keep in mind, what we see in the patent as well as what we don’t see isn’t necessarily ready for the production line.
Familiar Silverado Identity with Modern Styling:
- Upright grille preserves the truck’s character
- Split headlights modernize the front end
- Sculpted hood adds visual definition
- Squared wheel arches create a rugged profile
- Silverado EV influences rear styling cues
The overall design direction seems to strike a good compromise between the rugged look with modern detail and pickup truck practicality. The rear corner steps are retained for access to the bed while the introduction of the new tailgate could provide a new take on loading and bed access. Slightly higher-mounted exhaust outlets, especially on the flush-mounted side steps (with foot depressors), could provide improved departure angles, depending on the production intent. Inside, photos of prototypes indicate a move toward a more digital instrument panel, while the new engine and transmission plans suggest a broader refresh of the powertrain for the next Silverado that could make the new model dramatically different from the outgoing model without losing sight of the truck-like proportions that current owners may be used to.

10. What the Next-Generation Silverado Could Mean for Truck Buyers
Silverado deserves a thorough makeover, based on patent applications filed for the next-generation 2027 model that could change dimensions, styling, technology, engines, powertrains, and off-road gear. The new front end depicted in the patents appears to suggest a new grille treatment, split headlights, and a more aerodynamically curved hood. New taillights, redesigned rear doors, a different exhaust layout, and a possible split-folding tailgate could alter the look and functionality of the new truck’s rear. Patent illustrations also suggest a large and continuous digital display throughout the interior, while GM’s announced factory expansion implies hybrid-enabled V8 engines and transmission upgrades, with Trail Boss and ZR2 editions still in the pipeline.
Major Changes Expected for the 2027 Silverado:
- Patent filings reveal redesigned exterior styling
- Digital dashboard may receive a major update
- New hybrid-ready V8 engines are planned
- Transmission upgrades target smoother operation
- Trail Boss and ZR2 are expected to return
All of the above will be significant for future owners, but the true ones will be the final powertrain roster, the tailgate operation, and the tech on offer in the production cabin. The potential replacement of the current 5.3-liter and 6.2-liter V8 with hybrid-ready units could be a major change for Silverado enthusiasts who prefer V8s, while the digital display and new exterior design might be welcome changes for those who like a more modern truck. All in all, the patent drawings and spy photos point to the truck’s future, but they cannot reveal everything. Chevrolet has not officially announced every feature in this report, and it simply states not to use patent applications as product announcements. The production model will tell the full story.
