A new era of mobility innovations is beginning for auto manufacturers, as they experiment with alternative powertrain concepts, long-distance extended-range electric vehicles and novel solutions to the range challenge. From the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, the pace of innovation on these solutions can be seen firsthand, as auto OEMs showcase vehicles that marry high voltage battery packs with efficient generator engines and complex electric drive systems. Several of these concept vehicles offer drivers the possibility of a combined driving range of up to 932 miles (1500 km) on a single tank of fuel and charge of the battery pack, respectively.

The new generation of electrified SUVs and crossovers also extends the notion of being a practical car. There is the option of offering either a luxury multi-seat interior with driver assistance and sensing systems or one that adds camping equipment, interior conversions, hydrogen capsule technology or rotary range extenders. These 10 vehicles show how automakers are trying out various technologies to offer increased range, flexibility and greater technology integrations.

1. EXEED EX9 Flagship SUV

Introducing the Exceed EX9 was unveiled at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, the complete size of the brand’s luxurious SUV flagship up front as a large, advanced control. About 5.3 m long, the luxurious SUV has a significant visibility of the road through the back of the side walls, thick D-pillars and a split folding clamshell type trunk. It has a lengthy size to give you the luxurious appearance and luxurious body size a flagship 3-row vehicle, and the options of a reason we will expect a longer range.

The EX9’s EREV version combines a 248-mile (400 km) pure-electric driving range with a claimed total range of 932 miles (1,500 km) while the SUV’s triple-motor powertrain is said to offer impressive performance. There’s also rear-wheel steering to enhance the new SUV’s agility for its size. Inside, the cabin has a wrap-around cockpit with a Skyline full-width screen and a large floating central display while the EX9’s six-seat layout (2+2+2 configuration) is equipped with active ambient lighting, an integrated fragrance diffuser, an onboard fridge and heated, massaging and ventilated seats.

2. Xiaomi SkyNomad N90 Max

Xiaomi Sky Nomad N90 Max The Xiaomi EV Sky Nomad N90 Max is the flagship of the Xiaomi EV’s Sky Nomad family and is based on the most advanced series-hybrid architecture for electric propulsion with long-range capability. The system is equipped with a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder powertrain as a generator and a pair of electric motors capable of delivering a combined 416 horsepower. Wheels are powered solely by electric propulsion, allowing the vehicle to maintain an electric-drive character, while the combustion engine can serve as a power source when needed for longer distances.

The N90 Max packs a 70 kWh+ of ternary lithium-ion pack and is claimed to be able to deliver 500 km of pure-electric Chinese light-duty cycle (CLTC) range and 1500 km combined range (around 932 miles). Its tech package further includes roof-mounted LiDAR and hardware jointly developed with Nvidia for sensing and edge computing. The interior accentuates the concept with a flexible, 2+2+3 7-seater setup, 180 degree-swivelling front seats, second row zero gravity seats, built-in fridge and a sliding centre armrest that can turn into a bar counter, which, when the car is parked, turns the cabin into a living room.

3. Xiaomi SkyNomad N90 Max Camping Edition

In terms of specifications, the Xiaomi Sky Nomad N90 Max Camping Edition is based on the standard N90 Max platform but is equipped with gear for camping and long distance family outings. Instead of selling a baseline model and charging additional fees for the off-road fitment, Xiaomi is equipping the vehicle with adventure equipment for when camping is added to the owners list of activities. It will be rated as a cultural life service vehicle and offer more flexibility for drivers seeking the ability to use the SUV as transportation and a temporary living environment.

The pop-up roof provides a 100 mm lift and additional space for a rooftop sleeping platform. The side cabinets and side-tent interface can be added to extend the outdoor capabilities of the vehicle, along with a detachable table and optional projection system that transforms the parked vehicle into a campsite retreat. The weight of the Camping Edition is closer to 2,840 kg curb weight, but the dual-motor setup with an extended-range powertrain stays the same 416 hp – strong support for the new focus on multi-day trips and outdoor living.

4. Xiaomi SkyNomad N70

The slightly smaller version of the Sky Nomad series but, like the bigger N90 versions, the N70 Sky Nomad employs a series-hybrid architecture. Its extended-range electric design employs a gasoline engine that serves exclusively as an electric generator, and the combustion engine never powers the wheels directly. This arrangement enables the vehicle to provide electric propulsion and to draw more energy from the battery when the available charge becomes low.

The N70’s more streamlined dimensions are intended to provide greater versatility for everyday use, particularly in urban environments, while still maintaining the technology expected from the SkyNomad family. Its Hyper Autonomous Driving platform is supported by comprehensive sensing equipment, including cameras and millimeter-wave sensors integrated into the fenders, mirrors, and bumpers. This combination allows the N70 to target family buyers who want a high-tech SUV that can remain practical for daily city driving while also providing greater confidence for longer weekend journeys.

5. Chery Tiggo X

Unveiled at the 2026 Beijing Auto Show, the Chery Tiggo X is an all-new flagship three-row hybrid SUV positioned above the Tiggo 9L. The vehicle is 5,050 mm long and has a wheelbase of 2,950 mm. It has seven seats and uses body material that contains roughly 85% high-strength steel. The vehicle’s large size and three-row layout put it in the family flagship SUV category, while the hybrid powertrain showcases the importance of long-distance performance and the flexibility of a hybrid system.

Chery Tiggo X Highlights:

The Tiggo X uses Chery’s hybrid system to produce 476 horsepower and 630 Nm of torque, with either a 1.5-liter or 2.0-liter turbocharged engine paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. It claims an electric range of 124 miles and a combined range exceeding 932 miles. Driving stability is supported by MRC electromagnetic adaptive suspension and a Snow Leopard full-time four-wheel-drive system. Its Falcon Pilot 700 driver-assistance system uses LiDAR and provides advanced L2-level point-to-point driving support, adding another layer of technology to the flagship SUV’s long-distance capabilities.

6. NamX HUV Hydrogen SUV

The unconventional dual-tank structure offers 8kg of combined total storage capacity and 800 km of combined drive range which is targeted to be around 496 miles. Two different way to deliver extended-range mobilitynamely, hydrogen instead of a traditional gasoline range extender. A fixed 5kg hydrogen tank (using carbon composite materials) embedded into the floor of the vehicle, and interchangeable six individual 0.5kg hydrogen tanks located behind a glassed tailgate panel offer a means for quick refueling without heavy refueling infrastructure.

NamX HUV Highlights:

The removable capsules are intended to provide a new approach to hydrogen refueling by allowing owners to eject empty bottles using a key fob or smartphone app and replace them at dedicated CapXtores kiosks in less than two minutes. The HUV is planned in a 300-horsepower GT version as well as a 550-horsepower all-wheel-drive GTH variant. The more powerful version is capable of reaching 62 mph in the low four-second range. Combining distinctive styling, modular hydrogen storage, and strong performance, the HUV represents an alternative interpretation of how long-distance zero-emission mobility could be developed.

7. Li Auto L9 Flagship EREV

The Li Auto L9 has become one of the leading representations of the premium extended-range electric vehicle (EREV) design-at least in the world of larger family SUVs. This full-size SUV employs a series-hybrid architecture which uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine solely as a generator to charge the batteries to power the wheels, offering about 240 km of range on electric power alone until gasoline is needed to generate electricity for the wheels.

Li Auto L9 Highlights:

With a weight of around 2,450 kg, the L9 offers comfort and driver appeal with a versatile six-seat layout, zero-gravity seats and a sophisticated infotainment suite. Sitting above 250,000 yuan ($35,250/£27,820) in the Chinese market, the L9 would sit in the premium end of the family-SUV class. The vehicle shows how an EREV system can provide the linear, instantaneously available drive feel of an electric drive, augmented by the wider range of an onboard generator, that can be desirable for long-distance family use without needing a huge battery.

8. AITO M9 Luxury SUV

Developed in partnership with Huawei, the AITO M9 is a technology-focused luxury SUV that combines extended-range electric propulsion with advanced digital and driver-assistance features. Its EREV version uses a 1.5-liter turbocharged range-extender engine supplied by Harbin Dongan. The generator is reported to achieve approximately 41 percent thermal efficiency, helping the vehicle make effective use of its fuel while producing electricity for the electric drive system during longer journeys.

AITO M9 Highlights:

The M9 is available at prices over 250,000 yuan and is equipped with the long-distance series-hybrid system, advanced driver-assistance software, and a highly connected smart cockpit. Power from the range extender is fed to the high-output electric motors, enabling the SUV to deliver electric-like instantaneous torque while enjoying flexible long-distance operation. In addition, the M9 will be equipped with a range-extender to provide electrified driving for users who expect technology-based luxury with long-range flexibility.

9. Leapmotor C10 REEV

The Leapmotor C10 REEV brings extended-range technology into a more accessible SUV package and expands the concept into both China’s domestic market and European export markets. Its series-hybrid system uses a Harbin Dongan generator engine while the vehicle’s wheels are powered exclusively by electric motors. When the battery needs additional energy during longer trips, the combustion engine operates as a generator rather than directly supplying mechanical power to the wheels.

Leapmotor C10 REEV Highlights:

This configuration creates a practical bridge between everyday electric driving and longer-distance travel. Drivers can use the vehicle’s available pure-electric range for routine urban commuting while relying on the onboard generator for extended highway journeys. This reduces the need to plan every trip around charging availability while retaining the electric driving characteristics of the vehicle. The C10 REEV therefore demonstrates how extended-range technology can be applied beyond premium flagship SUVs and introduced into a broader consumer segment.

10. Mazda MX-30 R-EV

Mazda takes a distinctly different approach to extended-range mobility with the MX-30 R-EV, using the company’s expertise with rotary engines to create an unconventional range-extender crossover. Instead of relying on a traditional reciprocating piston engine, the vehicle combines an electric motor with a compact single-rotor Wankel rotary engine. The rotary engine operates strictly as an onboard electrical generator, meaning it does not mechanically drive the vehicle’s wheels.

Mazda MX-30 R-EV Highlights:

Because the rotary engine only generates electricity, the Mazda MX-30 R-EV maintains a smooth electric driving response while using the compact engine to provide power when the battery is low. This avoids requiring a much larger battery and offers an unusual solution to range concerns. Alongside models such as the EXEED EX9, Xiaomi SkyNomad, Li Auto L9, AITO M9, Leapmotor C10 REEV, and NamX HUV, the MX-30 R-EV shows how automakers are exploring different paths to longer-range electrified mobility. These vehicles combine electric driving with onboard generators, hydrogen storage, and other technologies while adding features such as advanced sensing, flexible seating, luxury interiors, camping equipment, and innovative energy systems.
