
General Motors has over the last half-century pushed the boundaries of automotive design, technology and engineering. In addition to the numerous production vehicles that made their way onto roads around the globe, GM also designed and built numerous concept cars that never made it into the hands of buyers. The prototypes served as a test bed for GM styling, new layouts, offbeat technology and alternative personal transportation ideas. Many of these concepts gained widespread praise and widespread press at major auto shows, although many of their ambitious looks proved difficult or costly to put into production.
Yet these abandoned ideas reveal some of the principles that drove GM to innovate, even when the cars were never built for public consumption. Some served as technological test-beds, some tested the waters with flamboyant styling, and some were test-beds for what was then considered radical new powertrains. In the end, economics, shifting customer trends, safety considerations and manufacturing issues killed these designs, but many paved the way for future GM cars, carrying proof that even concept cars that don’t make it to the market can have an impact.

1. Buick XP2000
GM’s Buick XP2000, 1995 GM developed the XP2000 concept for the individual automaker Buick in 1995 as a surprisingly high-tech, futuristic, personal transportation concept. The XP2000 featured a voice-activated system, keyless entry, and a heads-up display that made it look oddly more high-tech than most cars of its day. GM’s stylists also designed the XP2000’s body with a sleek, aerodynamic shape, with the interior reflecting the high style. Its colorful electronics and futuristic styling made the concept an instant highlight of GM’s displays at many shows, as media members and other auto enthusiasts came to see the company’s vision of high-tech personal transportation.
Buick XP2000 Features:

Though concept vehicles garnered a lot of press coverage, the XP2000 was never made in series. GM felt that it was just too far advanced from what was reasonably possible to produce a vehicle that would be too expensive to sell to the buying public. So the concept was left as an experiment in what Buick could do in the design and engineering of future vehicles. Its value was in the ideas it brought to GM as a concept vehicle rather than in the production version of the XP2000.

2. General Motors Le Sabre
The production of the General Motors Le Sabre began in 1951 as a “shot across the bow” of the car industry. With a design that was inspired by looking at jet aircraft, Le Sabre presented a sleek body that could serve as a visual presentation of the hope and technological advances that were being envisioned for the Post War era. Instead of looking like an average car, the Le Sabre was crafted so that it was first and foremost inspired by the look of jets and other aircraft.

The Le Sabre was also a rolling test bed for new technologies. Technologies incorporated into the car included a dual fuel system and an electronic canopy system that would automate the raising of the glass canopy so GM engineers could research innovations not currently available on production cars. Even though the Le Sabre was technologically advanced and had a very modern concept, GM had no plans to put the car into production. It was meant to be a “show” car that would test out new technologies and the value they might have on future production cars.

3. Oldsmobile Antares
The Oldsmobile Antares was a concept designed in 1995 to establish a new line of mid-sized sedans following the tradition of the Oldsmobile 88. Using a large glass roof, dramatic body lines, and unique metal controls, the Oldsmobile Antares was a striking concept for the Oldsmobile brand that year. This concept was also the first to carry the new Oldsmobile brand emblem; its interesting use of styling and a “futuristic” approach to design provided a glimpse of how the Oldsmobile brand would look as time went on.

The Antares didn’t live on through production as initially intended because the evolving market preferred a different approach. The demand for coupes was falling as the Antares was being fleshed out, and the lack of desirability of the coupled style for what GM was now looking for, the muscle car would not do. However, it was not dead for long, because the eventual move was toward an older style of mainstream transportation, which would work its way toward becoming the Oldsmobile Aurora sedan and the like. But nonetheless, the exercise that the Antares was, was still an important step in Oldsmobile’s 1990’s renaissance of ideas.

4. Pontiac Club de Mer
Pontiac built the Club de Mer in 1956 to boldly showcase General Motors’ fascination with future and performance-oriented styling. The two-passenger sports roadster had a very low, sleek aerodynamic profile, and an open cockpit evoked the styling of aircraft. The new proportions of the club de Mer were unlike traditional cars and gave it immediate presence, especially at just 39 inches in height. The Club de Mer wasn’t designed as a typical car to be driven on the streets, it was instead a styling and technical statement.

Unsurprisingly, the extremely low profile brought some very real application and safety implications. The vehicle’s odd proportions disqualified it from being a vehicle that could generally operate in public roadways, and those same restrictions prevented it from being a practical, feasible production proposal. The Club de Mer was, therefore, doomed to be a garage queen, since it served its purpose as a statement of what Pontiac, and other GM designers, were capable of when designing vehicles explicitly for that goal.
5. Buick Y-Job
1938 Buick Y Job Buick’s first test of a concept vehicle went back to 1938 when Harley Earl designed his first Y-Job. Unlike the cars of the era, the Y-Job was a sleek, low-slung vehicle that would have been unrecognizable with most vehicles of that time. It proved that automotive styling could be a form of design exploration and not just preparatory work on regular production vehicles, and it was a look that would be adopted by other automakers, as the Y-Job introduced a series of features that were virtually unprecedented.

The concept also had wraparound bumpers and a flush convertible top as well, showing its focus on sophisticated styling and technology. While the Y-Job wasn’t designed to be a run-of-the-mill production model, it impacted future Buick production cars, pioneering ideas that would eventually become all the more common across the industry. Its significance, then, came largely from the fact that it was an exercise in concept design and a prime example of what a freehand team of designers could do with a blank canvas. As such, the Buick Y-Job remains an influential piece of GM’s early history of concept cars.

6. Corvette Stingray
How the car was conceived The Corvette Stingray concept came along in 1959 as a bold experiment in styling and performance for a sports-car design. Inspired by the shark-inspired architecture of the very fast Mako Shark, the concept entered the world with a muscular appearance and aggressive stance that were further distinguished by fiberglass construction. Beneath the shape of its long, deep, sculpted hood was a powerful V8 engine, a clear indication of the performance calling-card the Stingray concept made to the world.
Corvette Stingray Highlights:

The Stingray proved significant however in that its styling and technical ideas would carry into the production version of the Corvette for the following year. The second-generation Corvette hit the showroom in 1963, and like the original Stingray, it also borrowed heavily from the original design. The original Stingray wasn’t sold as a true production vehicle to consumers, but it was a strong influence on the production design that followed, and from the way it looked, it is clear that GM was trying to follow a certain look in these new models.

7. General Motors Ultralite
Ultralite was a 1992 concept car developed by GM as an ambitious exercise in sustainable and ultra-efficient motoring. Ultralite was powered by an extremely clever hybrid drive system housed within an ultra-light carbon-fibre body and was topped off with an aerodynamic exterior shell. This combination allowed the vehicle to run with a total fuel economy of a mile for every 100 gallons, making this vehicle one of the most fuel-efficient vehicles on the road at the time, and showcasing GM’s commitment to more sustainable motoring.
General Motors Ultralite Features:

In spite of how efficient the Ultralite was, there were other serious issues that stood in the way of bringing the car to market. The cost of the carbon-fiber body, as well as its cutting-edge hybrid technology, were cost-prohibitive to develop in a commercial application. Additionally, consumer demand and the marketing infrastructure to sell this type of vehicle didn’t exist at the time-early ’90s. The car was still considered experimental, but the project showed that GM was interested in exploring lightweight body panels, aerodynamics, hybrid powertrains, and emissions reductions even decades ago.

8. General Motors Hy-wire
General Motors unveiled the Hy-wire concept in 2002, fusing drive was already ultra-innovative: its futuristic hydrogen fuel-cell drive system and its radically different body architecture. It was planned to be extremely electronic, but if developed could have revolutionized thinking on the placement of the various elements of the machine. An original touch was the involvement of school children in the naming of the vehicle! By removing mechanical linkages GM engineers had more flexibility to rethink the relationships between the chassis, drive mechanism, passenger compartment and control system.
General Motors Hy-wire Technology:

- Used camera-based rear vision
The biggest innovation was the flat skateboard style chassis, with the drive components wrapped under the passenger compartment. This gave the designers more flexibility in how they could seat passengers and organize the cabin space than traditional mechanical arrangements. The Hy-wire even dispensed with rearview mirrors entirely, instead relying on cameras and in-cabin LCD screens to show the way behind you. The idea never made it to production, but it showed that GM was interested in zero-emission transportation, and the ability to have a flexible vehicle architecture. It was also one of the more ambitious ideas to rethink the entire car from scratch, instead of simply refining a familiar platform.

9. GM-X Stiletto
The GM-X Stiletto was envisioned as a dream car that had a flair for the dramatic and showcased some of GM’s most far-out theories of automotive styling and aerodynamics. Its wedge-shaped body made it appear quite futuristic; doors fashioned from aircraft cockpit-style canopies provided a dramatic means of access to the interior. The Stiletto’s exterior design appeared more like a car dreamed up by a science-fiction writer, rather than something created to go into production. Its unusual dimensions and dramatic design were just what the doctor ordered to liven up an auto show floor, where concepts like the Stiletto could go to work.

Within, the Stiletto repeated its forward-looking styling with novel controls and instrumentation. Despite this, the radical styling and sophisticated mechanics were much too ambitious for present-day production methods, and because of the sculptural proportions and detailing the GM-X was essentially impossible to mass produce. The GM-X Stiletto was thus more of a styling exercise and technological assertion than a true production car, though it is remembered mainly for its impulsive styling and forward-looking approach, neither of which could readily be transferred into a showroom model.

10. Cadillac Evoq
Cadillac Evoq Cadillac launched the Evoq at the Detroit Auto Show in 1999 as a bold concept of what American luxury performance could become. Developed by Cadillac design chief Kip Wasenko, the Evoq was a roadster with edgy angular bodywork, a luxury interior and supercharged Northstar V8 under the hood. In styling terms, it was a radical departure for the brand, indicative of a new design language, yet it also garnered plenty of attention thanks to its muscular shapes and engineering, and striking allusions to Cadillac’s modern character.

- Inspired Cadillac XLR
While the Evoq was never a production vehicle, Cadillac used the concepts explored in its design and mechanics as an important design and technology exercise in its development of the production Cadillac XLR, introduced in 2003. In spite of its never being offered to the general public, the car fulfilled a number of essential purposes, including establishing a new bold form language for the marque, and leveraging a new design language and visual attitude for the XLR. The Evoq also tested the waters for moving from a softer, restrained visual language for the marque to something more aggressive. The evolution of these GM ideas shows just how much experimentation is possible when designing a car before it is put in front of a customer.
