Several major systems in a car are likely nearing the point where repairs or replacement parts will be required, or where a timed maintenance schedule kicks in.

Turning this knowledge into a smarter buy, than an even more expensive mistake, generally hinges on the condition of the vehicle, as opposed to the age, measured in odometer miles. Knowing what issues are associated with significant odo miles, on a vehicle’s major mechanical systems or main body structure, can help a buyer make a more accurate investment assessment. Those factors include condition of the transmission, rusted body parts, brakes, suspension, engine, with attention to proper maintenance and service history. Armed with this info, a buyer still has a solid chance to get a good value from a 100K odo car, for example.

1. Transmission Wear and Replacement Risks

The transmission is one of the first mechanical systems to test when considering buying a high-mileage car. Although new technology can deliver years of good service, there is no avoiding the wear on the internal components when a part has that many miles. Conventional automatic transmissions are often expected to make it to 100,000 miles, while even the most diligent modern machines are often suitable for 150,000 to 200,000 miles and a little more. Concerns include transmission slips, clunks and overrun noises, delayed engagement, harsh gear shifts, leaks, fluid problems and contact with shift solenoids and clutch packs.

The 4.0-liter V6 is known for being able to hit very high mileage if it’s well-maintained, and there are quite a few examples of this vehicle that hold towards 300,000 miles. Other vehicles that may be worth considering: the 2013 to 2019 Lexus ES 350; the 2014 to 2018 Mazda3 (with naturally aspirated Sky Activ engines); the 2015 to 2016 Honda CR-V (2.4-liter); and similar. They, too, can still need repairs and frequent maintenance, but a good knowledge of their familiar mechanicals can make them well worth considering. The name is no proxy for the car’s condition.
