Nissan Revives a Forgotten Name With an Electric City Car as Small Cars Make a Comeback

Nissan is getting ready to revive an iconic nameplate for a decidedly new age with the arrival of the entirely new, fully electric PIXO. Conceived for the European driver and for the complexities of modern city driving, this A-segment city car will have its world debut on 23 September 2026 and the news broke today, on World EV Day-and reinforces Nissan’s increasing emphasis on accessible zero-emission transportation. Likely to be the smallest and least expensive electric car in the line-up it will, under the new Micra EV, fall in with both Leaf and Ariya.

The new city car highlights how Nissan is also using the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance to create these smaller EVs more cost effectively. Using the common AmpR Small architecture it will be built by Renault at their facility in Novo Mesto in Slovenia, together with the electric Renault Twingo and the revised Dacia Spring. Given the small battery size, city proportions, retro styling and potential to cost under 20,000, Nissan appears very targeted at individuals wanting a value and efficient electric offering.

3. Renault-Nissan Cooperation Supports the PIXO

The arrival of the PIXO is placed in a restructured phase in the Franco-Japanese strategic partnership. In March 2025, the Renault Group and Nissan signed new Framework Agreement for Strategic projects and also amended their New Alliance Agreement, according to which, a more adaptable and business-oriented relation was established “based on projects with potential for significant benefits to both companies.

Justin Cox of GlobalData commented on just how interlinked both Renault and Nissan had become as a result of their manufacturing, and sourcing of parts over 20 odd years. To let go entirely of such a strong bond would simply have been more problematic than creating projects such as the PIXO that is manufactured in Slovenia to maintain the advantages brought by their interlinked operations and costs of production as this increases manufacturing scale.

4. Compact Electric Powertrain

The PIXO’s definitive technical specifications have not yet been released, but what is thought to be its likely mechanical combination, gives us good reason for why it may do. We believe it to share fundamental structure with the all-electric Renault Twingo, which features the all-electric setup, consisting of an 80hp front mounted electric motor along with a 27.5kWh low-cost LFP battery.

It looks as though the whole powertrain of the intended PIXO will focus solely on efficiency rather than outright speed. With a predicted range of 95-100 miles (about 153-161km), the PIXO will have a sufficient battery for numerous average city driving practices. Nissan’s choice of relatively small battery will help to ensure that the car can be lighter and perhapscheaper. Nissan is not opting for a large battery that is designed for some lengthy cross country expedition like its fellow electric car drivers, but will place a moderate amount for shorter everyday tasks.

5. Lightweight Design for Urban Driving

Reducing cost of a small battery for the PIXO isn’t the only factor for consideration, less weight of this kind also plays an important role in controlling overall weight for vehicle’s efficiency and maneuverability in the city environment, for a vehicle to cope with busy city streets, narrow roads and difficult parking, lesser weight on the vehicle can prove to be useful.

6. Retro-Inspired Nissan Styling

The PIXO isn’t to be marketed solely as a purpose-bought utilitarian vehicle either. It has been revealed with a tongue-in-cheek image that has highlighted its tiny physical size and character; a leaked teaser video is even presented with a 1980s retro arcade game aesthetic including all 8-bit pixelated graphics, tying in with the PIXO name.

Reports suggest that the design pays homage to Nissan’s quirky 80’s Pike series range of small car, which stood out from the traffic in terms of looks and desirability rather than to simply merge with the current mass of metal flowing past. The PIXO seems determined to bring this ideology back for an age of electric mobility. Offering up a compact package as the base with a modern approach to the technology alongside a design signature which is familiar in so many other areas of the Nissan brand. Nissan is trying to instill character into the city car in place of outright cheapness.

7. Affordable Pricing and EV Competition

The value for money PIXO may be one of the strongest selling arguments of PIXO, as Nissan plan for an entry level price point of under 20,000 throughout all European markets and expect entry in to Britain, at roughly 17-18,000. If the target pricing is to be met upon its 2027 market entry the PIXO will be able to offer an affordable entry to the electric market.

The PIXO’s competitors will include many more small electric cars such as the Volkswagen ID.1, the Kia EV1, Hyundai INSTER, and the Honda Super-N. This gives it all the more importance why the car should be inexpensive, considering a buyer of a small electric car will be very price-conscious. Nissan’s ability to use a relatively small battery pack, common architecture and sharing a plant will contribute to keeping the price lower, and the aim is clear: to reduce the price tag that makes a switch to electricity not viable for some drivers.

8. The Forgotten Pixo Name Returns

Actually there is a precedent for using “PIXO” in Europe. A petrol version of the Nissan Pixo was available from 2009 to 2013, which was basically a rebadged version of the Indian made Suzuki Alto, and at the time Britain’s cheapest new car available to buy, costing from just 5,995. Everything about the car pictured below is almost the opposite of this but retains the familiar name.

Original Pixo was based purely on budget motoring-and now PIXO has been transformed into a hi-tech electric city car with a cute character design. It is reported that Nissan had toyed with ‘Wave’ as a potential name before settles on PIXO, but already existing badge provides immediate recognition factor. Nissan UK boss, James Taylor, made the point that the retention of existing nameplates is worth value as customers already have some degree of recognition with old names in the market place. This revives the link between Nissan’s traditional cheap city car approach and the new electric strategy.

9. PIXO Fits Into Nissan’s Wider Lineup

This new PIXO fits into a much wider transition under way at Nissan which also comprises changes throughout its entire product lineup. Still retaining models to suit various needs for various customers ranging from purely electric vehicle choices through to ‘normal’ cars and their respective SUV’s and trucks Nissan will use the PIXO to bolster its range of Small EV’s for the European market.

The place for the PIXO seems to have to do one thing and that’s become cheap and small and also electric and what that is intended for and with very cheap costs to go and get this car, you get another entry into the Nissan Electric ecosystem.

With its small battery, city-focused range, playful design, and targeted pricing, the PIXO is designed for everyday use. If Nissan can deliver the expected range and practical character at its target price, the revived nameplate could become an important part of Nissan’s European EV strategy and give city drivers another reason to switch to electric.
