
A 600-mile round trip drive can serve as the quintessential American weekend getaway: packing up your family to drive to a national park, to visit relatives three states away, or to drive to a beach town on the coast is still close enough for you to desire a low fuel cost but still too long to spend the whole weekend planning fuel stops. However, driving this same road trip with three different categories of powertrain: a hybrid compact SUV, a gas compact SUV, and an electric SUV gives fundamentally different results in dollars and hours.
To perform an honest comparison of three different powertrains, we’re considering three distinct compact SUVs that a four person family could realistically cross shop alongside one another, at overlapping 2026 price points. Serving the part of the hybrid offering is the 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid AWD in its LE trim, starting at $33,350 MSRP and with an EPA highway rating of 39 mpg highway. As our baseline gas option, it’s time to look at the 2026 Honda CR-V AWD in EX trim, priced around $34,000 but with a 34-mpg highway rating from the EPA. Coming in as the electric options, we have the 2026 Chevrolet Equinox EV AWD in its LT trim, with an estimated price around $34,995 and a 280-mile driving range from the EPA.

1. Setting Up the 600 Mile Test
The spring time of year presents a good, relatively even season of driving, sitting squarely between the substantial range penalties that electric vehicles endure in severe cold and the ideal battery conditions of summer long, driving on this journey would likely fall into between 45 to 60F, at 65-70 mph on the highway with a fully loaded vehicle. All three of these conditions together start to show how the fuel math works out.

There is a hefty penalty to be paid with either the cheapest or the most expensive fuel. That’s where it’s most clear to see which powertrain option has a higher total cost. Of the many parameters in the test, ensuring that all three operate under the identical set of conditions shows a truer representation that many people would put into play on a springtime family weekend road trip.

2. The RAV4 Hybrid’s Fuel Costs and Range
Cost to Refuel the RAV4 Hybrid and the distance it travels before stopping for gas. The RAV4 Hybrid has a 13.2 gallon fuel tank for the LE AWD version, equating to a highway range of 515 miles (the EPA highway EPA number is 39mpg). Driving 600 miles would cost $53.90 in gas at $3.50/gallon and $61.60 at $4.00/gallon and it is not one of your most efficient cars at the pump.

On a highway in normal driving conditions, while averaging a constant highway speed between 65 mph and 70 mph the actual average fuel economy for a hybrid will be from 5 to 10% less than the EPA estimate which gives about 35-37 mpg. At an average of 36 mpg your consumption at this speed would be 16.7 gallons. Changing the price to $3.50 and the cost increases to $58.40, although a refueling is still not made and on trip 1 in the RAV4 Hybrid.

3. The Honda CR-V’s Gas-Only Benchmark
In our benchmarks it is worth nothing that while our CR-V costs slightly more on day one, its 14-gallon fuel tank gives a range of 476 miles on the highway in EPA conditions, so the 600 miles would call for one to two fueling stops with our gasoline counterparts depending on if one could find their specific type of pump fuel in our specified range. Gasoline driving 600 miles at $3.50 per gallon and 34 mpg highway would cost a total of $61.80 to drive, while higher prices would increase that to $70.60.

With a fuel tank capacity of 14.0 gallons and a range of approximately 476 miles of highway driving, the Honda CR-V should only require one or two gas station stops on your longer expeditions. Given that an old-fashioned gas non-hybrid compact SUV getting an estimated 26 mpg on the highway would have required more gas and approximately $80.77 to get you there, it’s clear there’s been an impressive progress made by gasoline SUVs.
4. The Chevrolet Equinox EV’s Charging Math
The fully electric, AWD LT Chevrolet Equinox EV does a lot to rewrite the fueling and braking equation of road trips with the whole family. Not only is this thing electric using electricity rather than gasoline it does so efficiently. Given its fuel rating of 17.7 kWh per 100 miles, this Equinox EV will use around 106 kWh overall to get 600 miles down the highway (your results may vary depending on outside temperature and speed).

Forty-five to 60 F spring weather isn’t quite the ideal 70 F of the EPA tests. It does, however, keep you out of those costly winter weather drawbacks. At best, 2.4 full charges from empty are needed to finish the trip, two fast charge breaks and one overnight at your destination. You’d pay close to $43 in electricity for two 50 kWh DC fast charging sessions, and including an overnight home recharge would put total energy costs to $48 well below the hybrid or gasoline option.

5. Why Spring Conditions Favor Electric Vehicles
In analyzing electric vehicles on the highway it turns out that the largest battery penalty that an EV might face in the spring is the fact that one will not maintain their full rated mileage when driving at highway speeds during those temperatures due to heat pump usage as there are greater opportunities for the electric vehicle to use 88% of its listed mile range as opposed to sometimes as few as 50% of range in deep winter weather conditions.

The range stays near the official and produces ~250 to 258 useful miles rather than the typical 196-220 useful miles that may be experienced in severe winter depths. In the spring, the Equinox EV can run efficiently using its standard heat pump, rather than using energy hungry back up resistive heating. The battery’s acceptance at DC fast charging also recovers greatly compared to when it’s below freezing.

6. Charging Stop Times and Trip Convenience
When 50F (10C), only 10-15% loss is reported in the DC fast charging compared to 36% loss reported at 32F (0C). This leads to 150kW DC fast charger outputs about 110-130kW in spring time. Charging efficiency gets significantly faster, which makes this car traveling for longer distances in spring easier than it does in winter.

In Spring, when fast charging sites are reduced from 45 minutes of charging to roughly 25-35 minutes per visit, drivers would show up to a site at 15-20% battery with roughly 230-250 miles after 30-40 minutes. However, having two 30-minute charge stops adds almost an hour on a roundtrip compared to a five minute gas stop, the kind that works for family car trips but not necessarily for speed-obsessed individuals.

7. Total Ownership Costs Beyond Fuel
Focus on ownership, not just fuel To see further economic differences in time to come if you look at total cost of ownership rather than only cost of fuel, AAA’s 2025 Your Driving Costs study said that the average total costs of operating and owning a new car in this country are “77 cents a mile,” that amount includes depreciation as well as insurance, fuels, and maintenance. As we mentioned, fuel savings alone are but one segment of your overall cost of operating a car, regardless of your family.

Electric cars are definitely way more convenient, particularly for their lower maintenance costs, since many people opt for these due to their zero emissions and reduced reliance on gas stations; plus, the absence of engine oil that you have to change (about $80 to $120 every 5,000 miles to 7,500 miles for cars fueled by gas). So you may save about $240 or more a year in gas costs (for a conservative 20 weekend road trips of 600 miles each, about 12,000 road trip mileage in a year based on vehicle maintenance costs). This includes cost savings by owning an EV. However for hybrid vehicles like this RAV4 that are utilizing motors with two engines, it will require an oil change.

8. Regional Electricity Pricing Across North America
One reason the economics of an EV makes sense throughout North America comes down to regional energy pricing. If you live in a province such as British Columbia or Quebec in Canada where residential electricity costs as little as $0.09 to $0.12 per kWh, that’s another sweet spot to maximize the charging savings on the go for most EV drivers that do mostly of their charging at home over night, or at the office over night.

This is contrasted by typical DC fast charging rates for public stations in Canada in the order of $0.35 to $0.55 per kWh. Such figures demonstrate just how significant to any EV owner’s overall savings are to their time away from home.
9. Ultra Efficient Hybrid Sedans Worth Considering
While compact SUVs dominate family trip conversations, buyers interested in extreme fuel economy can explore several highly efficient 2026 hybrid sedans. The 2026 Hyundai Sonata Hybrid starts at $29,200, generating 192 horsepower and a combined 51 mpg rating, with a 13.2-gallon tank delivering an exceptional maximum driving range of 686 miles.

The least expensive entry price, $25,420, for the2026 Hyundai Elantra Hybrid is accompanied by a 54 mpg combined rating and a 638 mile long range. Named fuel efficiency award for the car category of 2026, the all-new,Redesigned Toyota Priuscomes with an average 57 mpg rating and range of 644 miles compared to2027 Toyota Prius Plug-in Hybridas much as 44 electric-only miles driven.

10. Toyota’s Broader Hybrid and Plug-in SUV Lineup
However, the Japanese automaker isn’t stopping there with its hybrid powertrain and is looking to introduce its hybrid know-how into the lineup more widely.
