Their longevity comes from durable engineering, adaptable designs, and the ability to remain useful as aviation needs change. From strategic bombers and military transports to civilian trainers, helicopters, bush planes, and specialized attack aircraft, these machines have continued proving their real-world value across generations.
What makes these aircraft remarkable is the variety of ways they have stayed relevant. Some received upgrades that allowed older designs to handle modern missions, while others remained useful because their original configuration was already ideal for difficult environments. The B-52 has outlasted generations of strategic bombers, the C-130 has evolved into more than 40 variants, and the Cessna 172 remains a fundamental training aircraft. The Beaver and Twin Otter continue serving remote regions, while the Black Hawk and AC-130 demonstrate how proven airframes can keep adapting to demanding military roles.

1. Boeing B-52 Stratofortress
The Boeing B-52 Stratofortress is one of the most legendary strategic bombers in the history of military aviation. Retaining combat capabilities in the United States Air Force since 1955, this aircraft was designed to deliver a powerful nuclear punch over extremely long distances. Carrying up to 70,000 lb of weapons and reaching a combat radius of 8,800 miles without aerial refuelling, the B-52 set new standards for strategic bombing aircraft. The eight-engined swept-wing bomber was first flown during the early Cold War period and continued serving as a strategic deterrent despite the appearance of more advanced aircraft.

The longevity of the B-52 bomber is related to its combat effectiveness. Despite the addition of state-of-the-art avionics, the B-52 Stratofortress remains a core component of the USAF’s strategic nuclear triad. Over 40 variants have been built based on the C-130 airframe. The best-known modified C-130s include the AC-130 gunships, while other special versions were developed for combat assault, aeromedical evacuation, weather reconnaissance, aerial refuelling, maritime patrol, and aerial firefighting. Civilian versions of the Hercules are known as the L-100. This aircraft is used by the U.S. Air Force, Navy, Coast Guard, Marines, and many other military organizations around the world. 3. Cessna 172 Skyhawk
First delivered to customers in 1956, the Cessna 172 Skyhawk became the best-selling light aircraft in the world. The four-seat piston single-engine aircraft was built from the 1950s until recently and retained its popularity among private pilots, flight schools, and aerial survey companies. Featuring a tricycle landing gear and a high-wing configuration, the Cessna 172 could cruise at 122 knots and had a range of 640 nautical miles. The Skyhawk was a simple aircraft to maintain that could be used for personal use, training, photography, and even pipeline inspections.

The Cessna 172 Skyhawk became iconic for its reliability and affordability. Moreover, this aircraft has remained an essential stepping stone for aspiring pilots, including those operating from remote airfields. In Alaska, for example, small planes are often used as a means of local transport, so spares and maintenance facilities need to be available. The 172 was rivalled by the Beechcraft Musketeer, Grumman American AA-5, Piper PA-28 Cherokee, Diamond DA40 Diamond Star, and Cirrus SR20. However, the Cessna 172 stayed in production through a brief hiatus between 1986 and 1996 and remains the most popular light aircraft.

4. Boeing 747 Jumbo Jet
When it first entered service in 1970, the Boeing 747-100 set the standard for modern jet travel. Designed to carry over 300 passengers, the Boeing 747 introduced the upper deck to jet travel and became an icon of airline travel. However, the production of this aircraft is ending soon as the last 747-8F freighter is set to roll out in 2023. Featuring six engines, the 747-8F can carry 295,000 lb of freight 4,390 nautical miles.

The Boeing 747’s production line produced hundreds of aircraft for more than five decades. The 747-200 increased the take-off weight and range, while the 747SP was optimized for long-haul flights. The 747-300 featured an extended upper deck, while the 747-400 had a two-crew glass cockpit and increased fuel capacity. The 747-8 variants powered by General Electric GEnx engines debuted in 2011. Variants of the 747 included the VC-25 presidential aircraft, E-4B Night wing, the Shuttle Carrier Aircraft, YAL-1 Airborne Laser, and SOFIA (Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy). 5. UH-60 Black Hawk
The four-bladed twin-engine medium utility helicopter known as the UH-60 Black Hawk has become synonymous with military aviation. First flown in 1974, the UH-60A Black Hawk was selected by the U.S. Army in 1976 to replace the venerable Bell UH-1 Iroquois. Featuring a tandem two-seat cockpit, the Black Hawk was capable of inserting and extracting various types of soldiers during combat or peacetime operations. More than 4,000 Black Hawks have served in combat theatres around the world, while the aircraft’s utility role makes it a popular choice among other military branches. Over 5,000 Black Hawks have been built as of January 2023.

The Black Hawk utility helicopter has seen its share of upgrades to improve its performance and maintain its combat effectiveness. Upgraded versions of the UH-60, such as the UH-60L and UH-60M, retained their core characteristics while featuring enhanced electronics and other improvements. Specialized versions of the Black Hawk were created for electronic warfare and special operations, including the MH-60G Pave Low. The U.S. Navy owns the SH-60 Seahawks, while the HH-60 Pave Hawk proved to be a perfect utility helicopter for the U.S. Air Force. The MH-60 Jayhawk became the primary helicopter for the Coast Guard, while the civilian version of the Black Hawk is known as the S-70. Multiple versions of the Black Hawk have been sold to other countries, while the Japanese-manufactured variants are known as the Mitsubishi H-60.

6. De Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver
One of the most popular bush planes of all time, the de Havilland Canada DHC-2 Beaver was designed to operate from remote airfields. First flown in 1947 and entering service in 1948, the single-engine high-wing propeller aircraft featured a short take-off and landing (STOL) capability. The Beaver utilized a high-wing design and all-metal construction, while its powerful engine provided additional take-off power and safety. Large tundra tires, high-lift wings with full-span flaps, and a high power-to-weight ratio allowed the Beaver to operate from gravel, ice, or difficult terrain. Such conditions were typical for the northern regions, where the Beaver saw its most significant use.

The DHC-2 Beaver was primarily used for commercial and utility purposes. It was also employed as a transport by the U.S. Army. Today, nine DHC-2 aircraft are still used by the U.S. Air Force Auxiliary Civil Air Patrol for search-and-rescue operations. Over 1,657 aircraft were built before the original production line was closed in 1967. Many of these planes were later rebuilt or upgraded to extend their service life. Tools, parts, and procedures were donated or given to the Viking Air company when it acquired the type certificate from de Havilland Canada, becoming De Havilland Canada later in 2018.

7. Bell 206
One of the most successful helicopter manufacturers in the world, Bell Aircraft has produced over 7,300 aircraft of the Bell 206 model. First flown in 1962, the Bell 206 was originally designated Bell YOH-4 and was the U.S. Army’s Light Observation Helicopter. This aircraft later evolved into the five-seat Bell 206A Jet Ranger and was eventually adopted by the U.S. Army as the OH-58 Kiowa. The Bell 206 family also includes the seven-seat variant known as the Long Ranger and the twin-engine version called the Twin Ranger. The Bell 206 was a versatile helicopter that could hover at a desired location while losing altitude and having the ability to manoeuvre sideways or backward.

Generally speaking, helicopters consume more fuel per mile than fixed-wing aircraft. However, being able to hover over a specific area while losing altitude makes them the aircraft of choice for certain missions. The Bell 206 family could be configured for various tasks, including passenger transportation, medical evacuation, search and rescue, fighting wildfires, carrying cargo, and patrolling. Most helicopter models have a maximum speed of around 170 knots, with many utility variants reaching 130-170 knots.

8. Embraer A-29 Super Tucano
Embraer’s light attack aircraft known as the A-29 Super Tucano proved that propeller planes still have their place in modern air forces. Evolved from the EMB 312 Tucano, this twin-seat attack aircraft initially entered service in 2003. Featuring a turboprop engine, the Super Tucano was built for counterinsurgency operations, close air support, surveillance, and training missions. This aircraft could carry 3,300 pounds of weapons while operating from short, unimproved airfields. Due to its reliability and cost-effectiveness, the Super Tucano was selected by over 15 nations. More than 260 Super Tucanos have been built as of April 2023.

The A-29 Super Tucano attack aircraft had many advantages over its jet-powered rivals. It could take off and land from short, unimproved airfields, which is especially vital for forward operating bases. The Super Tucano’s simplicity and ruggedness maximized its mission readiness and allowed it to perform many duties, from air-to-ground attacks to homeland defence. The weapons carried by the Super Tucano included various General Electric GP750F rockets, laser-guided bombs, and other options. While most of Embraer’s jets are now twin-engine, the A-29 Super Tucano is still powered by a single turboprop engine. Embraer produces the Super Tucano in Brazil, while Sierra Nevada Corporation assembles the jets in Jacksonville, Florida, for the American and foreign customers.

9. AC-130 Gunship
The AC-130 gunship is an interesting combination of old and modern technologies that allows it to dominate the skies over enemy positions. Upgraded from the C-130 Hercules aircraft, this heavily armed and armoured aircraft has been serving the U.S. Army since 1967. Featuring twin rotating 20mm M61A1 Vulcan cannons, the AC-130 could provide close air support to ground troops and was particularly effective during the Vietnam War. The AC-130 performed its duties while staying at low altitudes, which limited the use of traditional aircraft. Moreover, the AC-130’s armament was mounted at the port side of the fuselage, allowing it to engage targets while the gunship circled around the target.

The AC-130 Gunship was originally known as the Project Gunship II when first conceptualized. It was later adopted by the U.S. Air Force to replace the Douglas AC-47 Spooky. The AC-130H Spectre was armed with 20mm M61 Vulcan cannons, a 40mm Bofors, a 105mm cannon, and other light weapons. The AC-130U Spooky featured a 25mm GAU-12/U Equalizer, a more powerful fire-control radar, and additional ammunition storage. The AC-130W Stinger II was the latest iteration of the gunship, featuring a precision-strike package. Finally, the AC-130J Ghostriders was based on the MC-130J Commando II. The earlier AC-130 variants were retired from service, leaving the AC-130J as the sole gunship in the U.S. Air Force inventory.

10. De Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter
The de Havilland Canada DHC-6 Twin Otter is a versatile short take-off and landing (STOL) utility aircraft built for remote areas and harsh weather conditions. First flown in 1965 and entering service in 1966, the Twin Otter was a twin-engine aircraft known for its reliability and ruggedness. The DHC-6 could operate from unpaved and unprepared strips, making it suitable for areas inaccessible to other aircraft. The Twin Otter could also be configured as a commuter airliner, a utility aircraft, or even a medical evacuation ambulance. This aircraft was particularly valuable in the coastal regions as the floats, amphibious gear, and retractable wheels could be used simultaneously.

The Twin Otter can use pontoon floats or amphibious gear with retractable wheels, allowing it to operate from both water and conventional runways.
