Stellantis Recalls Vehicles Over Radio Software Bug Affecting Rearview Camera Displays

With many vehicles reliant on the right computer software the digital elements are no more or less crucial than conventional mechanical elements of vehicles now. A piece of software now helps link the most disparate vehicles; from an off-road vehicle, family minivan, tough pickup or sports sedan. Stellantis may be highlighting both of these positive aspects and also some of the potential downsides of a massive 1M+ vehicle global recall.

The recalls, including almost 850,000 vehicles in the U.S., are due to an issue with the software which may inhibit the backup camera display from illuminating. The U.S. Recall campaign involves more than 848,000 Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, and Ram vehicles in model years 2026 and 2027. An estimated 107,000 more vehicles are being recalled globally, of which about 83,000 vehicles are in Canada, 8,000 in Mexico and 16,000 elsewhere.

More generally, a total of about 955,000 vehicles around the world is suspected to have the same radio software malfunction problem. However, what really makes the recall remarkable to notice is the diversity of vehicles it covers, and what it demonstrates about the interconnectedness of the modern vehicle’s digital brains. The same digital software issue can now permeate multiple brands and types of vehicles, thanks to the use of standardized software and electronic architecture in their design.

1. A Software Problem Affecting Nearly One Million Vehicles

The scope of this Stellantis recall is incredibly wide. Chrysler models included are 2026-27 Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid, 2026-27 Voyager, 2026-27 Dodge Charger, 2026 Cherokee, Compass, Gladiator, Grand Cherokee, Grand Cherokee L, Grand Wagoneer, Grand Wagoneer L and Wrangler. The recall covers a broad range of family vehicles, SUVs, off-road models and performance vehicles, showing how widely the same software issue can reach across Stellantis’ lineup.

Another major group of affected vehicles comes from Ram. The 2026 Ram 1500 and 2500 pickups are subject to the recall, as are the 2026 Ram ProMaster and electric-powered ProMaster EV. Family vehicles, off-road vehicles, work vehicles and electric vehicles may look completely different to consumers, but they can share important software components and digital systems. 2. The Backup Camera Glitch Creates a Safety Concern

The recall addresses an issue related to a faulty radio software within the vehicle. This software can be unresponsive, block media output and in some circumstances, the rearview camera image is also blocked. The camera is powered on by the vehicle electronic systems, which relay and image process into a visible rearview image and a fault within the radio software could corrupt the information fed to the camera

Stellantis said it has not received any reports of crashes or injuries associated with this specific problem. That said, it poses a risk whenever a driver reverses their vehicle, especially in congested environments, driveways, parking lots, and other places where people or objects may otherwise go unnoticed. But it is an example too of a problem which may once have been an “infotainment glitch” growing into a full-blown safety recall. So as vehicle screens take on more safety-critical role, so the software they run on must work reliably whenever a driver actually needs it.

3. Owners Can Receive the Fix Over the Air

One of the most useful things about this campaign is Stellantis has figured out the best way to address the problem, as well. The company doesn’t want to have customers bring every affected vehicle into a service department, so it has figured out how to transmit the software update over-the-air, in a similar fashion to how you update an application on your phone.

Owners have been and will receive a message pop up on the vehicles’ multimedia display announcing when the update is ready. Once the software updates have completed owners should find their rearview camera display is functioning correctly again and without the need for replacement parts and major workshop costs. A legacy solution is also in place for drivers who require additional support. Dealerships will be able to install the update for free at owners’ behest, and recall notices are slated to be sent out to them in the mail soon. Owners can use vehicle’s identification number with the nhtsa database or reach out to Stellantis to learn if they will need to.

4. Backup Cameras Are Now Federally Required Safety Equipment

Later, the NHTSA established rules mandating that new vehicles 10,000 pounds gross vehicle weight or less include back over technology; this mandate went into effect for all such vehicles by May 2018. These are some of the risks associated with these “blind” zones behind vehicles that fed into Federal regulators cited statistics of 210 fatalities per year and 15,000 injuries as a result of back over accidents in light vehicles, with children younger than age five accounting for 31% of those deaths.

5. Camera Software Recalls Are Becoming an Industry-Wide Issue

Stellantis is by no means the only company to encounter issues with displays in digital cameras. The modern automobile is a nest of complex electronic trails where the video signals from cameras are passed to and analysed in the core information and display module. A fault somewhere along this digital path causes what is supposed to be a safety feature to fail.

In an April report that cited a Bloomberg News analysis of the data, it was reported faulty camera systems were connected to the recalls of about 21 million vehicles that have gone out since the United States mandated rear cameras in cars. “Software glitch or manufacturing defect, the camera issues show just how hard it can be to keep digital systems working reliably in ever-more complex vehicles,” Bloomberg News had reported earlier. Volkswagen has had a similar issue; tens of thousands of Atlases SUVS have been recalled for failing to display a rear-view image. The sight of two similar issues, in different brands is clear that the addition of a camera system in the vehicle will be of concern to not just the automotive manufacturer but engineers worldwide, for more than just two marques.

6. Stellantis’ Shared Architecture Explains the Recall’s Scale

The massive Stellantis recall makes a little more sense when looking at how Stellantis was formed. Stellantis put former Chrysler, Jeep, Dodge, Ram, Fiat, Peugeot, Citroen and a number of other large brands together into one global company. One of the big benefits of that strategy has been to allow companies to pool engineering and technical resources.

  • One defect spread widely
  • Different vehicles become connected

Utilising a common infotainment architecture, software and shared development, a significant chunk of cost is removed. Rather than developing different sets of digital architecture from scratch for each brand, automakers would build a central architecture and apply it to different vehicles. This means that tech would be introduced into many models of car efficiently. The downside of such efficiency, however, is that it can produce much bigger gaps for software flaws. What might have been contained problem for one maker’s hardware in the past could spread through shared architecture so that one poor line of code can hit a minivan, pickup, SUV, cargo van, and sport-compact simultaneously.

7. Earlier Stellantis Software Problems Show a Pattern

The defect could intermittently obscure critical vehicle information, including warning lights, gear-position indicators, and other displays used to communicate important safety information to drivers in the United States. While the earlier vehicles used a different display system from the camera-related software involved in the latest recall, both incidents show how closely modern vehicle software is connected to government-regulated safety functions. These cases also provide valuable engineering lessons for Stellantis and other automakers. When similar problems appear in software built around common vehicle architectures, manufacturers can identify weaknesses in their validation and testing processes and improve them for future software releases. Lessons learned from one project can also help engineers strengthen quality and reliability across later vehicle programs.

8. Over-the-Air Updates Are Changing the Economics of Recalls

Typical vehicle recalls can be cost-effective and convoluted: A faulty mechanical part might mean a manufacturer must rush to create replacement parts, ship them all over the world, schedule dealership visits and pay technicians to do the actual work. On top of that, customers might even need a car while theirs is under the recall.

Software recalls are also treated differently. Once they figure it out in the software, millions of vehicles can have their bugs fixed wirelessly. This profoundly impacts the way car manufacturers will be able to deal with digital defects. Software remediation by remote download has substantially reduced cost and complexity. As such car makers have more leeway on dealing with these issues quickly. Connected cars allow manufacturers to quickly adapt to safety related software bugs in a manner that was impossible with mechanical components.

9. Drivers Still Need to Pay Attention During the Update

It should have little effect on many impacted owners: Affected vehicle owners will be able to continue operating their vehicle, The recall should have little effect on many impacted owners, as affected vehicles can continue to be driven while the software update is being prepared. However, Stellantis recommends that drivers use their mirrors when parking or reversing if the camera feed does not appear on the vehicle’s display. This simple precaution can help drivers maintain visibility until the software issue has been corrected.

Drivers also have several ways to respond to the recall, including the wireless update, mailed recall information, dealer assistance, and an online VIN check. The range of available options shows how connected vehicles are making recalls easier for both automakers and owners by allowing certain software problems to be corrected without requiring every vehicle to visit a dealership.

10. Automotive Software Will Continue to Shape Vehicle Safety

The Stellantis initiative reflects the much wider change that we are already witnessing within the automobile manufacturing sector. Vehicles are increasingly not just mechanical systems dependent upon engines, gears, brakes and suspension components, but rather connected electronic entities with software governing many of the functions which a driver will interact with each day.

The Future of Vehicle Software:

  • Software controls more functions
  • Shared platforms improve efficiency
  • Digital defects can spread
  • Testing must become stronger
  • Safety depends on reliability

That’s huge for automakers. Common software platforms can lower development costs, permit vehicle improvements to arrive after the vehicle has already been bought, and enable some defects to be corrected simply through a download. On the other hand, each shared system opens up yet another path for the bug to proliferate. So, the big issue for the long term will be ensuring an appropriate ratio of efficiency against stringent validation procedures. All new safety functions will rely more and more on the digital domain so a manufacturer will have an ever-deeper need to test and monitor the software. Recall by Stellantis a classic example of a relatively small problem in one software package impacting a million vehicles due to shared digital infrastructure.
