
The encounter with the very large can reshape your perception of the concept of engineering, engineering and in the same way the capability of man to work big plans. A bigger-then-normal vehicle, a mega-hangar building the giant plane models you would see on the airport but to accommodate really giants planes, or even constructions to build further than what you can imagine in scope, these big plans show the incredible progress in the engineering with their engineers or architects breaking some limit and in a way the laws of physics.
There are many examples of truly outstanding cars over the years too, not only some designed to get difficult tasks done, but alsoSome of these great cars have been visionary thinking, although not so commercially successful as one would have hoped. Even projects the size of a huge industrial investment, or disastrous attempts in failed experiments at safety, have not been forgotten and the result of such works continue to dictate the appearance of today’s modern cars.
What follows spans an even greater variety of engineering accomplishments and milestones in the automotive industry. Some are impossibly large, others are unprecedented infrastructure projects; some are impossibly over-the-top vehicles, still others are numerous industry-altering corporate safety oversights. Read the whole, spectacular mess together. It represents the engineering peak – and arguably bottom – possible, and you probably recognize a handful.
1. Hummer H1 “X3”
The H1 “X3” Humvee: Created by the “Rainbow Sheikh” Sheikh Hamad bin Hamdan Al Nahyan, this giant HUMMER H1 is approximately three times the width and three times the height of a normal H1, with a height of 21.5 ft / 6.5 meters. It resides in the United Arab Emirates and if a normal Hummer was a big vehicle, this thing makes an ordinary sized Hummer look small compared to it. The H1 X3 looks just like an automotive creation that isn’t even possible.

Beyond being a huge-looking display H1 “X3”, this massive rig is totally functional and allegedly utilizes four diesel power sources, with one per wheel to enable all-wheel drive. The interior, as you can expect, is rather bizarre and includes multiple beds and even a toilet, as well as other amenities in order for it to resemble a humongous motor home.
The Hummer has long been part of its owner’s impressive collection that spans many of the planet’s different models of four-wheel-drive vehicles, while they own the famous Emirates National Auto Museum in Abu Dhabi. 2. Boeing Everett Facility
Built by Boeing in the 1960’s to house assembly of the Boeing 747 aircraft, the sheer size of the Everett production facility, stands as the biggest factory on Earth when measured in cubic volume. With 472,000,000 cubic feet of industrial space enclosed within approximately 4.3 million square feet of roof on 98.3 acres, the Boeing Everett facility offers a uniquely unparalleled production facility for nearly any industry.

One need not ask why it is so big. Boeings need that much space indoors to put together a portion of these huge giants for commercial Aviation. One can not really picture how enormous this space is but then with such icons from big attractions put in it it helps us see how HUGE. You would be surprised that one can fit the theme Park Disneyland within this building if required.
The doors to the facility are also an indicator of its exceptional scale some of the facility’s largest doors are 82 feet wide and 350 feet high. These doors are the width of a football stadium to accommodate moving huge airplanes, as well as huge machines. The Everett facility is a stark demonstration of engineering: what is involved when the machines are also the size of planes.

3. Statue of Unity
Measuring at around 182 meters in height (600 feet), India’s Statue of Unity is the tallest statue in the world. In terms of size, the statue offers an interesting comparison to many of the most iconic figures in the world. Place the Statue of Liberty alongside it, and the American monument would only reach up to about the waist of the Statue of Unity statue. It’s the Statue of Unity scale that compares to such other popular statues in other parts of the globe.
When constructing something of that height, there needed to be major consideration to stability, structural integrity of materials, as well as its building form. Its unique length makes it one of the grandest infrastructure achievements of all time.

This project reportedly spanned approximately $8.5bn in cost, and took the construction team four years. Between 5,000 to 10,000 construction workers were on the project, an awe-inspiring number if you’re thinking of how much went into this enormous endeavour. It would actually take just over two hours to ride the whole length of this bridge by train.
Beyond just trains, engineering conditions have made it capable of facing strong climatic environments such as an earthquake, typhoon and even the possibility of impact from the naval ships. In essence, in addition to sheer scale, it demonstrates precise planning that takes into account its lifelong structural capacity.

5. The Tucker 48
The Tucker 48 Preston Tucker made a car after WWII that seemed like one of the more forward-thinking American cars of the day. The car was way outside of what everyone else was doing with new safety ideas and a rear-mounted engine but as they intended it was to put everyone else on the toes.
Innovation Collides With Industry Opposition:
- Rear-engine layout challenged conventional designs
- Safety features were unusually ambitious
- Tucker targeted established automakers
- SEC investigation created major pressure
- Limited production shaped lasting legacy
Unfortunately, this quick ascension came to a crashing and controversial end. The business practices of his company became the focal point of an inquiry by the Securities and Exchange Commission that was looking into the possible commission of fraud within the company. At the same time, Tucker claimed that the three automotive industry behemoths were complicit in obstructing his company with crucial components, materials, and supplies.
Preston Tucker was found innocent in all the charges but that did not mean that all was lost, the financial ruin had already set in, production stopped and only 51 Tucker 48’s were made. To this day the Tucker 48 holds a special place in the American car industry history, not just for the unique and clever design but also for the tough struggle that the Tucker Automobile company faced with industry giants.

6. The Ford Pinto
The Ford Pinto became one of the most infamous examples of an automotive safety controversy in American history. During the 1970s, concerns emerged about the placement and protection of its fuel tank, particularly during rear-end collisions. Under certain circumstances, an impact could cause the tank to rupture and create a serious fire hazard.

Production of the Pinto ended in 1980, while the episode became a lasting example of the importance of prioritizing vehicle safety during product development.
7. Ford’s “Failure to Park” Transmission Defect
A separate Ford safety controversy involved a transmission defect affecting millions of vehicles produced between 1966 and 1980. Under certain circumstances, affected vehicles could move unexpectedly from the park position into reverse. Drivers who believed their vehicles were safely secured could suddenly find them moving without warning, creating serious risks for people around the vehicle.

The problem generated thousands of complaints to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Critics argued that these steps did not adequately address the underlying mechanical defect.
By 1984, the defect had been officially associated with 77 deaths. The episode became another major example of how an unresolved mechanical problem can become increasingly dangerous when corrective action is delayed. It also contributed to greater scrutiny of automotive safety practices and the responsibilities manufacturers have when serious defects are discovered in vehicles already on the road.

8. The Ford-Firestone Tire Disaster
The Ford-Firestone tire crisis became one of the most serious automotive safety controversies of the late 20th century. Between 1991 and 2000, Firestone tires fitted to Ford Explorer SUVs were associated with tread separation failures that could occur at highway speeds. These failures could cause drivers to lose control, sometimes resulting in vehicle rollovers and fatal crashes.

The scandal also destroyed a historic business relationship between Ford and Firestone that had lasted for roughly a century. Firestone recalled approximately 6.5 million tires, while Ford recalled another 13 million tires as both companies attempted to address the problem. The crisis had lasting effects on tire safety, recalls, manufacturing oversight, and the relationship between automakers and suppliers.

9. The GM Ignition Switch Disaster
General Motors faced another major safety crisis involving defective ignition switches installed in millions of vehicles. The problem affected vehicles produced over many years, with the faulty switch capable of moving out of the run position while the vehicle was being driven. When that happened, the engine could shut off and several important safety systems could lose power.

General Motors ultimately agreed to pay a $900 million penalty related to its handling and concealment of the problem. The scandal demonstrated how failures in internal communication and corporate decision-making can turn a known mechanical issue into a much larger safety disaster.

10. The Takata Airbag Recall
The Takata airbag crisis became the largest automotive recall in history, affecting more than 100 million defective airbag inflators worldwide. The components were installed by more than 20 automakers, making the problem global rather than limited to one manufacturer or vehicle line. The defective inflators could rupture when airbags deployed, potentially sending metal fragments into the passenger compartment.

The company eventually filed for bankruptcy, making the episode a powerful reminder that a relatively small component can create enormous consequences when safety failures spread across millions of vehicles.
