The SSC Tuatara recorded a two-way average speed of 282.9 mph on a closed runway at the Space Florida Launch and Landing Facility. ThrustSSC is a British twin-engine jet plane, which holds the world land speed record for non-production vehicles. On October 15, 1997, ThrustSSC, driven by Royal Air Force Wing Commander Andy Green, reached a speed of 763 mph on the Black Rock Desert in Nevada. ThrustSSC was the first land vehicle to officially exceed the speed of sound.
