Exploring 10 Unreleased Volkswagen Prototypes and Concept Cars from the Wolfsburg Archives

Volkswagen is known for its iconic cars, such as Beetle, Golf, and Passat, but the company produced many other vehicles that never saw the light of day. The museum in Wolfsburg is home to various prototypes and concept cars that Volkswagen created throughout its history. They were built to experiment with new ideas, test new technologies, and design future concepts. Most of them were not produced as official models.

A visit to the Stiftung museum allows one to witness unique prototypes that represent the history of the Volkswagen company. Every car was a product of its time, created to address specific challenges and meet the needs of the market. Some concepts were way ahead of their time, while others were canceled due to changing priorities or proved too radical for the market. However, even the concepts that were not realized on the production line taught engineers and designers a thing or two and influenced the development of future cars.

1. 1955 EA 48 Prototype

The EA 48 prototype was Volkswagen’s first attempt at creating a small and inexpensive car that would be more affordable than the Beetle. It was the first project entirely developed by in-house engineers. The prototype was innovative and had a significant impact on the future development of Volkswagen cars. The prototype’s advanced technologies made it one of the most sophisticated experimental vehicles in the 1950s.

The car’s light body, front-wheel drive, and McPherson suspension were ahead of their time. The prototype was powered by an air-cooled flat twin engine and a four-speed manual transmission. The engine generated 18 horsepower. The prototype underwent several trials, and the results showed that the design was technically feasible. However, in 1956, the project was canceled. The management decided that the new affordable model would cannibalize Beetle sales and hurt the workforce.

2. 1961 Type 3 Cabriolet

After the success of the Type 3, Volkswagen decided to create a convertible variant. The company wanted to attract a more affluent audience and give the Beetle a more prestigious image. The project was canceled twice, and ultimately only one prototype was ever built.

The company’s executives believed that the Type 3 Cabriolet would undermine the sales of the Karmann Ghia Convertible. Thus, the project was terminated, and the only prototype was kept in the museum.

3. 1963 EA 128

In the 1960s, Volkswagen wanted to enter the luxury car market. The company turned to Porsche for assistance, and the prototype was a real masterpiece with cutting-edge technologies. It was a four-door limousine with a powerful six-cylinder engine. The project was canceled due to the management’s doubts about the market’s reception of a luxury Volkswagen.

The EA 128 project was powered by a detuned 2.0-liter flat-six engine. It generated about 89 horsepower and was paired with a five-speed manual transmission. The car’s rear suspension was borrowed from the Porsche 911. The engine was placed at the rear of the car in a standard Volkswagen manner. Thus, the prototype was a blend of luxury and performance. However, the management was unsure whether the customers would appreciate the value of a luxury brand from Volkswagen. This led to the project’s cancellation.

4. 1969 EA 276

The EA 276 project was one of the most important concepts in Volkswagen history. It served as the basis for the first Golf and marked the end of the Beetle era. The prototype featured technologies that were ahead of its time and later appeared in the Golf A1. The car’s design was transitional and had characteristics of both the old Beetle and modern Golfs.

It was a transitional concept that embodied the shift from air-cooled engines to water-cooled ones and front-wheel-drive platforms. The prototype later influenced the development of the first Golf.

5. 1971 ESVW I

The ESVW I prototype was the result of a collaboration between Volkswagen and the United States Department of Transportation. It was an experimental vehicle that utilized pioneering safety technologies. The ESVW I had a unique crash protection design that helped absorb impact and minimize damage during accidents. It was a concept car that was used to conduct experiments to improve vehicle safety.

It had a large plastic front part designed to absorb impact during collisions. The dashboard was heavily padded to reduce the risk of injury. The ESVW I concept was focused on safety and was a pioneer in the development of modern safety technologies.

6. 1972 T2 GT70

The T2 GT70 project was an experiment with gas turbine engines. It was a gas-powered alternative to the air-cooled engine that was later abandoned. The prototype was built to explore alternative powertrain technologies and was a concept that never went into production.

However, the turbine engine was too heavy and expensive for practical use, and the project was eventually canceled.

7. 1973 Basis-Transporter

The Basis-Transporter was a commercial vehicle that was designed to be versatile and serve different markets. It was created to address the specific needs of the emerging world market. The prototype was a concept that later evolved into the EA 489 basis model and was eventually put into production in 1976.

It was a flexible platform that could be adapted to different requirements. The prototype in the museum was a 4×4 version with a cargo area. The design later formed the basis for the Volkswagen Hormiga.

8. 1973 Plattenwagen

The Plattenwagen was a utility vehicle that was developed in the early years of Volkswagen’s history. It was created to transport parts and materials around the factory. The prototype was later adapted to carry other supplies, such as food and was used as a transport wagon inside the factory.

The handmade prototype was later adapted to transport food and other supplies. The company’s historians note that the simple design of the utility vehicle served as an inspiration for the development of the Volkswagen bus.

9. 1975 Chicco

The Chicco concept was a city car that was designed to be space-efficient. It could accommodate four passengers comfortably and was optimized to offer the best space utilization within a small footprint. The prototype was a concept that represented Volkswagen’s innovative approach to the development of small passenger cars.

The concept was a prototype that suggested that Volkswagen was willing to embrace unconventional solutions and think outside the box.

10. 1977 Passat GTI

After the Golf GTI became a huge success, Volkswagen began development on the Passat GTI. The prototype was a sportier version of the Passat that was designed to offer a more dynamic driving experience. The project aimed to create a family car that would have the performance and driving dynamics of a sports car. The concept was canceled, but some of its technologies were later utilized in the production cars.

The prototype’s powerful engine was later used in the top-of-the-line Passat GLI.
