Under the banner of ‘Home of X’, the colossal plant in Spartanburg became the stage for a multi-billion dollar announcement on what it takes to build BMW’s future the $1.7bn investment and the new, highly flexible manufacturing assembly that can now house five distinct drivetrain technologies.
The latest model is more than a redesign it represents a paradigm shift in vehicle production for BMW and the wider industry, as this all-new X5 will be produced alongside all five available drivetrain variants of its kind on the same hyper-flexible manufacturing line. The world premiere of the new BMW X5 served as the centerpiece of this milestone event, reaffirming the brand’s deep commitment to the United States and what BMW says is a belief in customer choice, developed out of a global center of competence for all BMW X models. 4. Plant Woodruff Will Build Batteries for BMW’s EV Future
Adding fuel to the fire of BMW’s electrified future is the recently finished Plant Woodruff, a $1.7 billion new manufacturing investment in BMW’s U.S. Presence. BMW will produce the high voltage batteries for all the automaker’s electric future vehicles such as the upcoming iX5 here at this sophisticated facility. The Cell-to-Pack principle employed at the Plant Woodruff is what is termed a ‘fully integrated’ manufacturing solution: in a Cell-to-Pack battery, the cell is assembled directly into the battery housing, negating the steps of applying coating and of building up modules separately something that consumes valuable time.

7. Plant Spartanburg Is the Largest BMW Plant on Earth
This entire operation represents a lynchpin of the BMW global operation and of the American economy. BMW’s largest plant in the world at approximately 11,000 employees on site at this particular location, the facility has produced over 7.3 million cars on multiple generations since opening in 1994. In fact, for more than ten years running, it is America’s leading automotive exporter by value.

The nearly 30 facilities BMW has in 12 states, and its more than 400 suppliers across the country, employ over 120,000 American jobs, adding more than $43.3 billion dollars to the U.S. Economy every year. “The Home of X” celebration also included such prominent American officials as Governor of South Carolina, Henry McMaster and U.S. Senator, Lindsey Graham.
