P-47 Thunderbolt: 10 Facts About WWII’s Flying Juggernaut

Most of us think about America’s legendary fighter planes from World War II as the P-51 Mustang. But another plane gained almost the same historic status by virtue of its sheer power, robustness, and effectiveness. It was called the Republic P-47 Thunderbolt, or “Jug” to its pilots, due to its similarity to a “Juggernaut.” Although it did not fly as high and it wasn’t nearly as sleek as its warplane colleagues, the Thunderbolt went on to be arguably the most durable of all combat planes and, at low and medium altitudes, a workhorse capable of providing close air support to ground troops as effectively as bombing enemy positions.

Produced in quantities over 15,600 between 1941 and 1945, the P-47 Thunderbolt was the second most heavily produced American fighter aircraft of World War II. The massive, durable, and heavily armed Thunderbolt could fulfill a wide range of roles in the toughest combat environments. From long range escort mission to close range ground attack missions, the Thunderbolt could do it all and helped hundreds of Allied airmen survive severe battlefield damage.

1. Unexpected Origins Shaped an Aviation Legend

The Republic P-47 Thunderbolt wasn’t originally designed to be the flying battleship that became synonymous with the end of World War II. Aviation engineer and Georgian native Alexander Kartveli wanted to build an interceptor around the body of Republic P-43 Lancer. Republic Aviation wanted to produce a light fighter to enhance its existing aircraft without growing to the size and complexity that the aircraft would later develop to the demands of the US Army Air Corps. Few thought the project would turn into the biggest, brawniest single-engine fighters in WWII.

As the war in Europe escalated, military designers understood that fighters of minimal weight would prove insufficient when confronting an enemy capable of mounting ever more powerful aircraft. Experience of actual combat had made it obvious that heavier armaments, stronger protective armor, and more potent engines were needed to endure severe air combat conditions. For this reason, Republic Aviation entirely threw overboard the initial design of this plane, substituting it with a large air frame housing an exceptionally powerful engine.

2. A Fighter That Truly Earned the Title of Heavyweight

The sheer physical presence of the P-47 Thunderbolt-a huge, bold aircraft-caused an immediate stir. It was bigger than most of the other fighters being operated in that period, and was about three feet wider and four feet longer than the much-loved P-51 Mustang. At just over 10,000 pounds empty weight, it was 50% heavier than the Mustang and nearly twice as heavy as the British Supermarine Spitfire. With full tanks of fuel, bombs and ammunition aboard, the aircraft would tip the scales at nearly 8 tons-a tremendous amount of weight for a single-engine plane.

Its imposing size made the Thunderbolt one of the world’s heaviest single-engine fighter planes of World War II. Only a handful of types the Grumman Avenger, which featured a pilot, gunner and radio operator, was perhaps its closest match even remotely compared to the P-47 in terms of scale and weight. The experience of piloting so big an airplane took some getting used to for pilots familiar with lighter fighters, but this great size afforded plenty of room for its massive engine, sizable fuel tanks, substantial weaponry and strong structure that could withstand heavy battle damage.

3. Remarkable Speed Despite Its Massive Size

The heaviest fighters in WWII might have been surprising, P-47 Thunderbolt offered performance that defied Allied and Axis pilots. The fighter’s amazing qualities are attributed to the mighty Pratt & Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp radial engine which was an 18-cylinder engine producing 2,600 horsepower at its most efficient. The same extremely successful engine also found its way into some of the best fighter planes of WWII like the Vought F4U Corsair and the Grumman F6F Hellcat.

It featured a very capable engine combined with sleek aerodynamics, resulting in a top speed of roughly 440 mph (675 km/h) that rivaled the lighter P-51 Mustang. It excelled at high altitude where it soared up to over 40,000 ft altitude protecting heavy bombers en route over the enemy held territories during their extremely hazardous missions.

4. Devastating Firepower Made It a Battlefield Powerhouse

The sheer fighting power of the P-47 Thunderbolt was one of its greatest asset; this was no weak fighter compared to many of its brethren, who carried far less weight or firepower and had smaller number of guns; the Thunderbolt was built with powerful firepower to deliver sustained, overwhelming rounds on target at almost any level at enemy fighters or on the ground targets. The P-47’s firepower was an excellent characteristic and a one of the Thunderbolt’s unique and outstanding feature during WWII.

Its offensive potential was only amplified when flying as a fighter-bomber. The Thunderbolt could haul nearly 3,000 pounds of external bombs and other stores equivalent to approximately half the payload of the well-known B-17 Flying Fortress bomber in a variety of combinations. When loaded with 4.5-inch M8 rockets, the P-47 unleashed as much firepower as a battery of 105mm howitzers and became one of the more dreaded close-air-support platforms in the sky during World War II. When striking at a target, whether a tank, train, bridge, or a strongly defended enemy position, the P-47 clearly demonstrated that it was no ordinary fighter plane.

5. Legendary Durability Saved Countless Pilots

Of all the characteristics that brought fame to the P-47 Thunderbolt, it was its almost unbreakable durability that the pilots who flew it valued the most. In the opinion of many crews it was one of the most rugged fighters ever produced for its ability to absorb a lot of combat damage yet remain flying. Built tough in anticipation of wartime duty, even a severely damaged aircraft could often limp home. This gave the pilots more assurance every time they set off.

The survivability of the Thunderbolt became one of the defining features of the airplane during the war. Sources state that 0.7 percent of all Thunderbolt aircraft produced were shot down during combat. Considering the mission that the plane performed in the theater of operations, this is an exceptional record and commanded enormous respect among Allied fighter pilots who thought it would bring them back safely, after a rough one, and it typically did.

6. A Costly Investment That Delivered Outstanding Results

However, developing and producing the P-47 Thunderbolt was a very expensive endeavor. In World War II, each Thunderbolt fighter cost $85,000 to the U.S. Military a cost equal to about $1.1 million today. A total of over 15,600 of them were manufactured in Republic Aviation’s plants in New York and Indiana making it one of the largest production programs for a fighter aircraft in wartime.

It performed admirably during wartime and was a marvel of effectiveness and versatility. The Thunderbolt claimed the lives of almost 4,000 enemy fighters during dogfights and simultaneously inflicted considerable punishment against the enemy’s resources and equipment. These aircraft pulverized approximately 9,000 trains, 86,000 trucks, and 6,000 armored fighting vehicles, considerably debilitating enemy efforts. The aircraft quickly became one of the most capable multi-role fighter aircraft of the entire World War II, and it proven that all the efforts spent designing the Thunderbolt were truly worth it for the U.S military.

7. The Preferred Aircraft of America’s Top Fighter Aces

A favorite with many American fighter pilots, the P-47 Thunderbolt was praised not only for its fighting ability but also for the comfort it provided for pilots in long and arduous combat sorties. In spite of its bulk, it had a large cockpit which provided greater comfort to the pilot and some of the pilots likened the pilot’s seat to a lounging chair as compared to some of the narrow cockpits of other fighters. In later models of the P-47D the fighter had the advantage of the new bubble canopy, which provided excellent visibility for dogfighting and for strafing runs.

Some of America’s highest-scoring fighter aces achieved their greatest successes while flying the Thunderbolt. Francis “Gabby” Gabreski recorded 28 aerial victories, Robert S. Johnson achieved 27 victories, and David C. Schilling earned 22.5 confirmed kills in the aircraft. Their remarkable achievements reflected not only their exceptional flying skills but also the Thunderbolt’s consistent ability to perform under the demanding conditions of World War II aerial warfare.

8. A Global Fighter That Served Across Allied Nations

Though the P-47 Thunderbolt was primarily a US Army Air Forces aircraft, it was deployed in numerous Allied nations throughout the course of the Second World War. As liaison between the Allied nations grew, P-47 Thunderbolts were provided to a number of friendly countries needing a robust, reliable fighter. Over 800 P-47s operated with Great Britain and the Commonwealth countries in air forces carrying out reconnaissance, escort, and ground attack alongside other allied fighters.

International Service:

  • Operated by Allied nations.
  • Supported multiple combat roles.
  • Widely supplied through alliances.
  • Served across different theaters.
  • Proven reliable worldwide.

In addition, service for the Thunderbolt extended abroad with the aid of Lend-Lease. Some 400 were supplied to the Soviet Union, where they were primarily used as high-altitude interceptors, even though the Soviet Ilyushin Il-2 proved to be a favorite of Soviet pilots against ground targets. It also flew with the Brazilian Air Force during the Italian Campaign, as well as with a Mexican Air Force squadron in the Philippines, testament to the rugged and versatile design that would make the P-47 among the finest fighter planes of the Second World War.

9. A Remarkably Long Career After World War II

However, the P-47 Thunderbolt was not grounded with the ending of World War II. Even though its production had stopped shortly after the surrender of Japan, its reliability and sturdy structure ensured that it continued to serve with the military for years to come. After the war it was also redesignated F-47 according to a new system of naming U.S. Military aircraft, and it continued to serve a myriad of military duties even after the arrival of new jet fighters.

Abroad The fighter also proved surprisingly durable for service in other countries beyond its’ original role. While a few of the original fighter’s users like Italy, Portugal, and Turkey used theirs through out the 50s, in Taiwan F-47s did have a go at near the mainland China, and elsewhere around the world planes in Latin American have been in service as training/basic combat aircraft well after their use for this role in its home countries. It may be surprisingly for you to hear this, but Peru was flying a combat-ready Thunderbolt even in 1966, two decades after the last combat action by the Thunderbolt occurred.

10. A Lasting Legacy That Continues to Inspire Aviation

One of the greatest fighter planes ever made, the P-47 Thunderbolt demonstrated a fighter airplane’s ability to serve in escort roles, fight air superiority missions, and deliver ground attack missions with lethal efficiency. Its potent, rugged, and versatile design set standards for the single-engine fighter to live up to. Designs experimented further during the plane’s lifespan as an experimental variant attained a top speed around 505 miles per hour.

Today the P-47 legacy is carried on by museums, organizations and teams who restore the aircraft so people will be able to see them fly for years to come. There are at least 15 original WWII era Thunderbolts still flying today, and are found at air shows across North America where attendees can still hear the rumble of this legendary bird. The P-47 Thunderbolt, is more than 80 years old today but will forever be remembered as the great bird of engineering, resilience and power.
